We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuables feature is the alerts and monitoring that catches the failed backups.""The most valuable feature by far is the Virtual Disaster Recovery. On top of that is the bare-metal recovery. The recovery options that we have are great. We have tested the Virtual Disaster Recovery and the bare-metal recovery in just about any scenario you can think of. We have even restored bare metal, a full server, to a laptop, and had full functionality. It's just insane how well it works and how simple it is. It does most of the work for you.""I know I won't have an issue if the data is there. The reliability and the confidence that we have is amazing. It doesn't matter. We've had customers have ransomware. We've had customers that have had corruption. We've had customers that have had employees destroy their data. As long as it's been backed up, I know that I can get it back and I know I have nothing to worry about. Our confidence level is very high.""For starters, this is one of few databases that allow us to backup MySQL databases, most others only support Microsoft SQL. This solution also has a very user-friendly interface accessed through a web browser. Additionally, backups can be easily configured through N-able Backup.""The monitoring makes it very easy to check whether a backup has gone bad.""The ease of use and the console are great.""One of the bigger features and advantages of the solution is that it is easy to integrate with my RMM which is also N-able.""The product is simple to use and manage. The customers have access to verify the backups."

"It is easy to deploy.""I like working on the Azure platform.""The initial setup, if it is error-free, is very simple.""The most valuable features are backup and restore. This solution is also easy to use.""The initial setup was straightforward. It was very easy. Deployment only took about one hour with configuration and everything considered.""Veeam is very useful for the Hyper-V environment.""This is a good product with a simple environment.""We found the initial setup to be quite simple."

More Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL] Pros →

"The replication feature has proven to be the most valuable feature for us.""The setup was straightforward Veeam Backup Replication. NetBackup is a larger solution and takes more time to implement but Veeam Backup Replication takes approximately 40 days.""While I do not recall whether the latest version is 10.0 or 11.0 I do know that it allows one to make a back up repository that is very scalable and simple.""The features that I have found most valuable are its ease of management, it is not complicated, it is very reliable, has good support and a lot of knowledge on the market for integrators.""I can't think of any improvements yet for Veeam because they are very good. It integrates very well with Microsoft applications. It is very easy to integrate. Micro Focus can also integrate but it's more complex. You have to know the product very well to be able to integrate. While Veeam, it's very user-friendly. You don't need to have certifications or anything to work on Veeam.""The solution is easy to install and very stable.""Once you get it set up, everything is smooth, and the recovery is excellent.""Veeam Backup & Replication is a scalable solution."

Cons
"The one thing they don't are Linux servers, it's Windows only. I understand that directive. I have another product that I use for our Linux servers and stuff, but it would be nice if they had that flexibility on the Linux side. I understand the development and the world is geared towards Windows in 365, I know that's where the clienteles are and the business and the money is.""One area I don't like has to do with the agent that goes on the system... if a system stays offline for some length of time, say for a week or so, I may have to go back in and reinstall the agent to get it back in business. I don't know what's causing that.""The reporting feature and functionality need improvement. We would like to see a little bit more detailed reporting that offers more CEO or C-level focused reporting options.""Having the licensing available for partners to be able to take advantage of testing without paying would make a big difference.""The only area that needs improvement is that it is a little bit difficult when you get into virtual machines. The initial deployment of Cove is a little tedious, not for standard machines, but when you get into specialty stuff, like Hyper-V.""The recovery side, the restore side, could be a little more optimized.""An area for improvement that would really work out well would be if there were a little bit more of an elegant handshake relationship between SolarWinds RMM and the PCs that are being backed up, to advise regarding "up" status... Since RMM is an agent that feeds back that a machine is alive and on, I don't see any reason why they can't either tap into that one feature or build the same exact polling within the backup agent, to update right away and say the system is online or offline.""A feature I'd like to see would be a more customizable admin console."

More N-able Cove Data Protection Cons →

"The solution lacks instant recovery.""There are not many options available for AIX backup. They provide the agent for AIX, but it could be more mature.""I would like to see the ability for incremental backups and reverse backups.""I would like to have more flexibility in terms of reporting details about the backup.""The predictability of the solution needs improvement. Sometimes, if it's doing something at the back end, it may go slow. Today, the backup completion took four hours, but sometimes it can do the backup in 30 minutes or an hour. With solutions like NetBackup, I can predict to a much higher degree of certainty how long something will take to complete.""The backups can go slow.""There really are no cons. The product simply has to maintain development to keep up with changes in the operating system.""The solution's compression ratio and high speed for backing up can always improve. Aspects that need improvement are less time, better quality, higher security, and more compression. These are continuous requirements for any customer."

More Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL] Cons →

"Restoration takes about two to four hours with Veeam. Zerto can restore in about 10 seconds. That's the restoration speed I'm looking for now that we're dealing with ransomware.""Its native capability for talking to the public cloud needs improvement. Connecting to a public cloud is a little bit more of a challenge when it comes to Veeam than it is with Rubrik or Commvault. There are still some hoops that you got to jump through in order to send Veeam backups out to public cloud repositories. It is not as simple as it is with other products.""Veeam needs to have more support for non-Windows systems and other databases. For example, I can do SQL with Veeam but not Informix or Oracle. This is unfortunate because we have many partners with Oracle systems and Informix databases, and Veeam does not yet have the agents we need for specific Oracle and UNIX operating systems.""I cannot recall coming across any features that were lacking.""They need to focus more on cloud backup.""I prefer a software backup solution that allows me to easily define my origin data, including data files, folders, and virtual machines.""Its price is higher than other solutions and can be improved. They can also change the version of the software more often.""They fixed everything that I was hoping for. It is pretty good. There were a few things in 9.x that I was wishing for, and they came true in version 10. We were looking for retention without having to make a copy job. We're getting ready to migrate m365 to the cloud. I haven't dived into it to make sure, but I wish the m365 backup would integrate into the current console so that we don't have to use two different consoles."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing of SolarWinds seems to be fair compared to the rest of the industry."
  • "When you have a device/appliance on the site quite a lot of the other enterprise class backup people insist that you have their appliance, which is frankly offensively expensive. Because when you pry the top off, it's just a standard 19-inch tin box with a standard Intel I5 in it, some RAM, and a hard drive. Then, you go, "Why have they just charged me 5,500 quid for a box, which I could have probably build for under 500." Whereas, with the SolarWinds product, they don't have that. The backup appliances that we have onsite are just plain cooking PCs. We can build our own machines, which is reflected in the price that we can offer a customer."
  • "There is no per node cost, at least not the way I am doing it. I am on bulk. New customers can be set up on a trial, where they can get things all squared away, then they can switch over to being a billed customer."
  • "I believe that the price is very reasonable in comparison to other options. It is cheaper than both Redstor and Acronis and, since we are now using our own on-premise cloud, there is absolutely no comparison since we have unlimited storage rather than paying per gigabyte used for their onsite storage. We are currently able to backup fifty computers for the same price that we use to backup five computers."
  • "The only option I would like to see is an adjustable scale. Right now we have 250 seats and we're not using all of them. It would be nice to be able to save that little bit of money by being able to buy just what we need."
  • "Cove only takes the data you have on the physical server. I can back that up for long periods of time, and I don't accrue high charges to have the data in the cloud. It stays at one rate. This allows me to forecast payment for the next one or two years and show clients their estimated growth."
  • "The price isn't extreme, but I'd love to pay less."
  • "The pricing is very competitive and it's well worth the price."
  • More N-able Cove Data Protection Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis."
  • "Pricing is based on license packaging and duration. Longer term licenses are less per year and license packages also offer a discount."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees, and pricing can be a disadvantage or a weakness for this solution."
  • "We purchased a three-year license, and I think that the prices are ok."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis, and the fees are much lower than what I pay for NetBackup."
  • "The pricing model is based on CPU and must be declared as Microsoft or VMware licensing."
  • "We have a cloud provider agreement with Veeam. We are also paying for the agent."
  • More Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

Users can choose to back up individual folders and files, designate particular computer files, or even the entire computer image.

Backups can be saved in several different locations, such as:

    • Cloud Repository (Veeam Cloud Connect)
    • Backup Repository (Veeam Backup Server)
    • Network Shared Folder

    • Removable Storage Device (USB, CD, DVD, etc)
    • Microsoft OneDrive

    • File-Level Restore: Veeam Agent will use Veeam’s proprietary driver to publish backup content safely to a user's computer file system. Users can then access the content user Veeam’s Virtual Disk Driver (VDK), which is included with the solution. Users can then easily browse and copy the desired files and folders to use as desired.

    Veeam Recovery Media

Veeam Agent for Windows allows users to create a complete recovery image of their computer using Veeam Recovery Media. This image contains all data necessary to run Microsoft Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) while supplying a viable option to run users’ computer systems.

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
