BMC Appsight Review
It has the ability to provide run-time production problem resolution, but while the instrumentation is powerful, it can overwhelm the system and cause instability.

Valuable Features

Extremely powerful drill down capability across .Net/Windows and Java based applications

Ability to record application execution from user, system and code levels

Full video and client level capture and recording of user sessions

Extremely flexible deployment including connected mode (agent connects to controller) or standalone agent recording. The solution also provides the ability to allow clients to navigate to a url and execute the recording workflow using a "light agent approach"

Ability to provide diagnostics with the same agent for JVM/IIS tier in addition to deep granularity and visibility at OS level

Improvements to My Organization

Provided rapid ability to triage and diagnose customer production environments- exercises that normally would take weeks could be accomplished in hours with AppSight

Ability to provide run-time production problem resolution capabilities

Allowed onshore testing teams to collaborate very effectively with offshore development teams via the pre-production workflow features offered by AppSight

Use of Solution

6 Years - BMC AppSight - Application Problem Resolution

Deployment Issues

Very complex deployment which takes time to understand and master

Instrumentation is very powerful, but can overwhelm systems and at times cause instability

Stability Issues

Occasionally

Scalability Issues

Yes, BMC AppSight is similar to other legacy APR/APM tools requires incremental infrastructure (servers and storage) to be provisioned as the agent deployment increases.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

Currently, the service levels offered by BMC for this solution are very poor. Prior to 2012, the service levels for this product were excellent due to a very talented team maintained at BMC

Technical Support:

Currently, the technical service levels offered by BMC for this solution are very poor. Prior to 2012, the technical service levels for this product were excellent due to a very talented team maintained at BMC

Initial Setup

Initial set up requires assistance from subject matter experts due to complexity and variety of deployment options and the potential for introducing instability

Implementation Team

Initial deployments were assisted by BMC technical services, thereafter the Scicom team grew this expertise in house

ROI

Depending on workflow and deployments and situations- ROI can be extremely high to marginal due to technical expertise required to sustain an enterprise deployment. ROI for AppSight should be calculated using several dimensions including reduction in development tickets, QA roundtrips and MTTR for production incidents.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

Evaluate your resource needs for this tool and be honest about use cases- based on that ensure that your license sizing is not "overboard".

Other Advice

Ensure a strong technical SME with development or engineering background is available to support this products implementation.

I have used this product for sometime. My experience was great as it has additional functionality of capturing more diagnostic information from your system at one go.

Thanks Vasu, great insight. Yes, AppSight was a powerful tool.

:(

Sad that it has slowly died. I was just speaking with a Gartner alumni for application performance management and even he was saying what a powerful tool AppSight was. This is coming from a person who has seen and evaluated all major diagnostic solutions and is an expert. One of the features that no other company has been able to replicate like AppSight is the on the fly agent instrumentation for desktop/client systems. Very powerful, and like you say- can capture tons of information in one go
