FreeNAS Review
Its support for Hyper-V clusters needs improving, but you can present the storage as CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, etc.

Valuable Features:

  • Snapshot
  • Easy to manage
  • You can present storage as CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, etc.

Improvements to My Organization:

  • We save a ton of money
  • It's got a nice, user-friendly interface
  • Snapshot replication between the units
  • Easy configuration

Room for Improvement:

Its support for Hyper-V clusters.

Use of Solution:

I've used it for one year.

Deployment Issues:

No issues encountered,

Stability Issues:

No issues encountered.

Scalability Issues:

No issues encountered.

Previous Solutions:

Dell EqualLogic, and 3PAR. I like the 3PAR, but it is very expensive. Instead, I just spent money for fast SSD drives, installed FreeNAS, and you have a better solution then 3PAR.

Initial Setup:

It's easy to install. You download the program, and click through the wizard which - very simple. At the end, you just browse the IP and configure your storage the way you want to.

Implementation Team:

We implemented it in-house.

Cost and Licensing Advice:

You have to pay for your hardware, but FreeNAS itself is open-source.

Other Advice:

After using FreeNAS I will never spend money for commercial products like Dell or 3Par.
