IBM Cognos Review
Flexible and very usable but support is expensive

Valuable Features:

- We have worked with several reporting software products, and Cognos has a lot of flexibility and is very usable. It will perform most tasks that you would need.

Improvements to My Organization:

Cognos software accesses several data sources and runs on major IBM platforms to help your business get the consistent data it needs. Also, Cognos software provides native interfaces to major ERP and legacy systems for fast access.

Room for Improvement:

Cognos can improve in some data base basic connections (should be easier) mainly migrations in version 7.x to 8.x 10.x

Deployment Issues:

No, because the Cognos platform has a number of features that are designed to ease administration and deployment, enhance performance, enable scalability and reduce the complexity of your BI environment.

Scalability Issues:

No, scalability its very easy

Customer Service:

IBM support is very expensive. However, there are many online materials to improve your skills, as well as other consultancies beyond IBM.

Previous Solutions:

Yes, but these applications should not necessarily be changed. Home applications or simple BI tools can and should be used along with Cognos as most simple applications are not competitors. Many are even complementary.

Initial Setup:

Not very simple. It's important to get the advice of a qualified professional.

Other Solutions Considered:

Yes, we should always be looking at other solutions in the market and competitors, it is mandatory, like TCO analysis.

Other Advice:

2. Draw up a clear and effective communication with both the technical part and the internal and external staff

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: I started worked for IBM after I originally wrote this review.

Very balanced view and I like the fact you go to lengths to explain how important getting user buy in is. What position where you in when it came to the underlying data. In other words did you have a Data warehouse or what approach did you use for data sources.

Carlos, what have the migrations from Version 7 been lacking, and how has this impacted your user experience?

Dear Orlee, I did migration Cognos 7.x to version 10.x , Migrating Cognos is a highly involved process, especially when you are moving multiple versions. Whenn clients needed this kind of migration completed, we turned to Cognos SDK to streamline the process and adjust the system.

I recomend you to use IBM metolology and IBM Life Cicle to get effectivity,

Yes, I agree. Cognos is a very flexible and very usable tool. Users need to have the passion to learn and explore the tool... I have been with Cognos since Impromptu, ReportNet versions and Off late I have seen users ( younger out of college) who has no patience in knowing how the tool works and find it overwhelming. Most of them like the readymade reports or the visualization tools like Tableau.
