Oracle Exalogic [EOL] Review

Enables you to control middleware licenses and apps. ​EMOC needs more attention and simplification.

What is our primary use case?

decrease the licenses cost of oracle apps and FMW. AS Exalogic support oracle trusted partitioning license policy to license oracle apps.  

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved the way my organization functions by migrating apps to one consolidated platform that is dedicated to WebLogic and Oracle apps.

What is most valuable?

  • Good performance : Exalogic is designed especially for Oracle middleware and applications hosted on WebLogic servers or any other application running on the top of Linux/Solaris OS, Exalogic HW is integrated with Elastic cloud software that performance optimization and good performance for Fusion Middleware modules. Also, Infiniband switches add high I/O throughput.
  • Good platform for building easy clusters of vServers through ZFS storage: Exalogic has internal ZFS-ES storage which is supporting NFS sharing. Through NFS, WebLogic cluster (based on shared files system) can be implemented in an easy manner.

What needs improvement?

  • EMOC needs more attention and simplification.
  • The integration with EM cloud manager should be straightforward.
  • The ZFS interface (BUI) should be simplified.
  • Modifying the OS template should be more flexible.
  • Backup and restore using the Exabar tool should be redeveloped.
  • You can not restore a deleted VM directly; you have to create a VM and then restore to it.
  • You have a limitation with creating attached volumes to the VM (just 4 volumes including the template volume).
  • The included ZFS doesn't support replicating data inside the local disk (attached volume). You have to convert the local storage (attached volume) to shared storage NFS.
  • It doesn't support OVA.
  • You can not share the internal ZFS storage with any platform other than Exalogic, so it is a closed box.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have encountered stability issues: a storage failure that led to Exalogic being fully down' sometimes the storage cluster OCFS2 used for the OVM repository had stopped working and could not be mounted; finally, after many months, Oracle support discovered problems with InfiniBand (IB) host channel adapters (HCAs) that connect ZFS storage to the hosts and many firmware upgrades.

Sometimes while restarting the VM servers, they get stuck or no NIC is attached to the VM.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We stopped the update phase for adding more resources based on a management decision.

How are customer service and technical support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used a different solution; we switched to get one platform for WebLogic-based apps.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup is complex and you have to fill in a very complicated sheet.

What about the implementation team?

Implementation was done by the vendor team. Their level of expertise was about 5/10.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For pricing and license, you have to pay for Exalogic HW plus elastic cloud software for all cores at all nodes, so it will be expensive, including when upgrading. For example, to upgrade from 1/8 rack to 1/4 rack, you have to pay for 144 CPUs (144 * .05 (core factor for Intel CPU) * 10000 (price list for elastic cloud software )) + 22% for support per year + 130000 (price list HW upgrade) + 15600 HW support per year + services.

But Exalogic will help save on MW licences, which are more expensive than HW, as described elsewhere.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing, we evaluated other options; normal HW.

What other advice do I have?

The best thing from my point of view for Exalogic is that it enables you to control Oracle middleware licenses and apps, which are very expensive. It supports a trusted partition policy for licenses, so Exalogic is helping to reduce Oracle MW and apps licenses, as you are licensed only per the physical cores assigned to the VM server only and you can increase the licenses by increments of 2, 4, 6, etc. physical cores. You can not find this feature outside Oracle HW such as Exadata, Exalogic, PCA, etc. For normal physical HW, you have to pay for all cores in the physical sever, even though you might have a small load. For VMware, it will be a big problem and a licensing nightmare, as you have to pay for all of the VMware CPU cores in the cluster, even though you might only be using 4 cores!!!!! It is an unfair policy.

Exalogic is not easy for administration.

oracle Engendered system such as Exalogic , PCA ...etc provide the ability to the customer to control oracle licences for software such as database , weblogic ...etc, as they support trusted partitioning policy by using oracle OVM hyper-visor (the only support hyper-visor ) , so organization can be licensed only per assigned cpu cores to the VM servers, so you can license small number of cores and then according the new needs or loads you can license more cores of CPUs (pay as you go).

notes : by default each Virtual CPU on Exalogic node equal to one thread of CPU (so the ratio 1 vcpu to 1 thread and this ration can be increased by reconfiguration oversubscribe cpu feature in vDC of Exalogic ops center (management console of Exalogic ) to increase the number of virtual CPU but may impact the performance ).

oracle has released oracle PCA "private cloud appliance" previously was known as OVA, and I am expecting it will replace Exalogic as it is more flexible and support many Linux distribution such as redhat, centos , oracle linux, SUSE , Solaris , windows . there is no licenses for pca such as exalogic elastic cloud licenses.
