SAP Business Objects Review
Issues with versions 4.0 and 4.1

Specifically for versions 4.0 and 4.1 using BICS connection you will find a lot of problems:

  • Performance gets worst as WEBI reports increase the number of sheets and/or fields
  • Need to insert a lot of context into WEBI table cells for summarized or calculated on the fly Key figures (this is by design says SAP)
  • Group/ungroup functionality doesn't work if you set "query stripping" (also by design !!??)
  • The order of objects (dimensions) appears on BO side stops to correspond with the one defined at "Default Values" at qBEx side and takes the order for "Free Characteristics" (this happens only on version 4.1)

I'm not familiar with Microsoft BI but SAP BO 4.X within BICS connectivity is not going well.

Disclosure: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Being working on version 4.1 SP4 using BICS, I notice an increase of performance when bringing all the calculations to the backend (BEx queries), like aggregations for instance. Obviously, query design is very important!
I work with lot of transactional data (ex: date, doc. and doc.line) that then is grouped on WEBI report with several sheets (tabs), i.e., different analysis or views over the same information retrieved. As there's too much data rows and due the report's complexity, the performance gets worst as number of sheets increases. This is related to WEBI engine (the way it fills the internal micro-cubes).
Starting soon using WEBI against SAP BW on HANA.
