Veeam Backup & Replication Review

I retired Backup Exec, and added Veeam in place of it. This increased the backup scope and reduced tape usage.

What is most valuable?

The ability to perform exchange restores.

How has it helped my organization?

Surebackup allows verification of the backup. This provides a higher level of confidence.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

If there is a communication interruption (ping drops) between the proxy and the Veeam server, the backup fails.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

It's excellent.

Technical Support:

It's just below excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Backup Exec and ArcServe. These companies are too big to care even for their own products.

How was the initial setup?

It depends on the organizations structure and level of optimization.

What about the implementation team?

It was an in-house implementation.

What was our ROI?

Just recently, I retired Backup Exec, and added Veeam v8. This increased the backup scope by 30% and reduced tape usage by 70%

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No, but the pricing was key.

What other advice do I have?

Try it. Spend maybe one hour a week on the phone with their engineer to tweak things before buying. The product practically sells itself.

Not sure why your backups fail with the Proxies but I have never had that issue. We have a physical Veeam server and 1 Proxy per host which works great for SAN based backups. Check with Support on that.
