vSphere Review
Fast and Reliable Virtualization Solution

Valuable Features:

It is one easy to install and manage vitualization technique. Its pretty fast also, compared to some other vitualization techniques. And that is because its has a very small amout of resource overhead. It lacks the server console which decreases its booting time.

Room for Improvement:

We can say its free but it's not. Free versions has limited capabilities and misses some very strong features. So in my opinion its not free. Other then that, it misses the console, which may be good from booting point of view, but from troubleshooting point of view, its bad. As it takes a lot more administrations skills to tackle problem without the proper control panes in the form of the console panel.

Free vesion supports upto 32GB. If you need to use advanced features, you need to purchase a license and license cost is too expensive. Once you have got licensed features in place, I believe VMWare ESXi is best in today's market for Virtualized solutions.

ESXi is certainly free. The free version does have limited capabilities when compared to the full vSphere suite, but for a stand-alone hypervisor it is well featured. It also stacks up equal or better than other 'free' hypervisors on the market today. It does have the 32GB of RAM limitation, but for those looking to run the free version, 32GB should be good enough. If it is not, vSphere Essentials licensing is inexpensive even when compared to the hardware it runs on.

It also does have the management console. Granted, all you can do is network and host detail configuration, but you should not need to do more from this interface. If required, you can get console access via the interface, as well as remote access via SSH. You also have Powershell and Perl extensions for remote management. If you would like some pointers on local or remote management of ESXi hosts, please contact me and I would be happy to point you in the right direction.
