Acronis Cyber Protect Other Advice

Stuart Grigor - PeerSpot reviewer

It is recommended that people know what they are starting with. A part of our challenge was we bought and needed to implement it. So by the time we went to implement it, we were running into support issues. Also, make a market comparison to ensure that the product you choose is what you want to end up with.

I would give it a six out of ten because restoring from a backup takes longer than usual. It should happen in a matter of hours, not a matter of days. We are yet to have an experience when trying to restore from Acronis that we haven't had to wait at least a couple of days for our server to be available for testing or working.

I recommend utilizing a backup solution like Acronis Cloud Backup to manage and ensure the safety of your data. The advantage of this feature or the product is that even if you are not a technical person, it is easy to understand its features and use.

Due to the delayed support from the solution's technical team, I have deducted two points from my rating. As a result, I rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Acronis Cyber Protect works brilliantly for us with respect to data backup.

I'm the primary backup resource. I have one screen specifically for Acronis Cyber Protect that allows me to switch between multiple sites. We do 15 sites at a time. What's nice about the front end is that I could do things and go on and do other similar work and go back to the automated side of it.

The system is very smart and intuitive when it comes to that. I can just click and forget that thing. I can go back later, verify, ensure everything is as I expected, and just continue my work.

The biggest issue for me is the fact that Acronis Cyber Protect is actually a Windows-based system that's supported by Linux SUSE. Most of the solution's user cases and documentation pertain specifically to Windows. So, I have to take what I can see from the Windows side and apply it to how Windows works versus Linux, and then a lot of my problems are resolved by reading Windows.

I also understand that the solution's primary clients are Microsoft-based. It makes sense that most of the solution's documentation will be for Windows because most of its clients run Windows. Finding the right notes for the Linux side has been the only issue. Over the last five years, I've learned what to look for, and then I can take what's written for Windows and work from there.

We currently use the solution on a private cloud because it's a closed-network client directive. Within the next 12 to 18 months, we will probably move some of the features directly into the cloud because we are switching many of our hosts to AWS.

I would recommend the solution to other clients because it's very easy to install, configure, and maintain. I would recommend any software based on its ease of installation and support. Acronis Cyber Protect is very easy to install and get support. There are several resources, and the engineers are brilliant.

If you were to bring in an external resource, the learning curve isn't as intensive as a more problematic or complex system. The front end is very intuitive and easy to learn. I know this because I've trained two different teams to use the solution's front end. The solution is very easy to teach people and to learn.

Overall, I rate the solution ten out of ten.

When comparing to other vendors, based solely on my knowledge of their names as I haven't worked with them directly, I recall trying out the trial console of Barracuda, which seems somewhat similar. Barracuda was one of the pioneers in cloud-to-cloud solutions, whereas Acronis followed suit later on and wasn't initially a leader in this field. Acronis used to sell storage separately, which was considered a drawback, especially when you had to estimate how much storage your users would require. However, they have since introduced unlimited agent licensing, which addressed this issue. Another major player in backup, Veeam, initially followed a similar approach of providing your storage or purchasing it separately from cloud providers like Azure or AWS. Overall, I would rate it eight out of ten.

With all the new features being added, the solution is becoming heavy in its use of resources. It's important to be aware of that because it affects the running of some applications. And that's not good because if you implement a security solution, you have to make it safer.

Watch out for that “Skip bad sectors” setting if you plan on running this software unattended. Don't hesitate to call Acronis support. They will be ready and willing to help you right away.

The software warned Windows 7 Embedded was not supported, yet the backup/restore still worked despite the warning I was given.

It makes a full image of the hard drive. If a hard drive fails, all we do is recover to another hard drive. We just pop in the hard drive and that's very fast as well. Speed and the ease in which we recover full hard drives are valuable features.

Owner at a tech services company

The last job I did, I recommended this solution for a modest-sized building company. Their yearly revenues are about $30 million, so they're not a little remodeling contractor. They're building new homes but they're not a big company with hundreds of people, either. They asked me to come in and help them automate their office. They were not doing backups of anything, so they had their whole accounting system on a 10-year old computer with no backup. When I looked at it I said, "Here is a disaster waiting to happen." I set this all up for them.

I do have to go back there and see that it's all working, but it was all working when I left, assuming they didn't disrupt it somehow. I was very happy with how it worked for them. An experienced IT professional could bring this up without any help just by reading the documentation because it's very good. Anyone who isn't an IT professional should hire somebody to figure this out because the documentation is written at a high level. I'm talking about the corporate product, by the way, which I assume is what you're interested in.

For the small construction company, I didn't need the corporate product because they don't have a server, so I used the home product. The home product is much easier to use than the corporate, because the corporate has a lot more choices and things that are squeezed together. The single product they sell for home use they’ve kind of separated from the business one. It's a little bit more complicated and so you have to know how to drive it.

But, my main piece of advice is to hire someone who has either done this before or, at a minimum, is smart enough to read the documentation and set it up for you. My second piece of advice is, move into this in a sensible way. Get it up and running on one server and one workstation and see that you can manage it. Once you've got that working, then add more workstations or more servers to that. It is a solution that, assuming all of your servers are in one place or your workstations are all in the same network, you can run all of your backups - you can run them all - from one place.

In a larger organization, I would say you want to have a workstation that's identified to do this, and you have maybe several people with access to that workstation so they can manage these backups. It has a very good interface. I can see the status of every computer that I'm backing up; it shows me where it is. It shows me when the last backup was done, and if one is in progress. It also shows me the percent completion. I can go in there and click on somebody's computer and say, back it up now.

I can't think of anything that I would add to it. As far as what I need to do, I wouldn't add a thing.

It is perfect for small- to medium-sized business installations. I don't know for a large installation. By large, I mean more than a hundred computers. From what I've seen so far, I could easily manage the backups for five servers and 95 workstations without any problems at all. In my past experience, before such products were available, backing up individual workstations was a nightmare. 20 years ago, there was no way to do this kind of thing. You had to go around to each computer and run a backup. We had IT support staff running around form one computer to another and setting up the backups. Then the owner of the computer would decide, "Oh, my computer is running too slow. Oh, it's running a backup, I don't wanna do that," so they would kill it and then they wouldn't get any more backups. It's just having this level of automation I would consider to be essential. I think they've done a good job at that.

Acronis now includes a feature called Cyber Protect, which performs anti-malware scanning and protects everything on your system. It can also check for Microsoft patches and helps you to stay updated and protected. It has a very accurate disk health monitor that could warn you of imminent drive failure. It also protects the integrity of your online backups against ransomware. From start to finish, not only does it protect your hard drive, it protects the integrity of the backups as well.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight. You might require assistance to create backup plans and to link them to backup agents, and also for the fact that it doesn't have the ability work without a mouse.

I would tell potential users that Acronis has more solutions for different environments. You can get information from servers that don't use Windows and use other operating systems like Linux and Ubuntu. You can recover it in the cloud, and you can start a virtual machine. You can synchronize information. You've got a lot of features that the other solutions require you to install locally. It's very easy to use.

Technical support really isn't necessary in many cases because it's very intuitive, and it's not complex to resolve problems. If you want to get more information, you can find it on the Acronis site or the internet. You can resolve most of the little problems on your own.

I don't have anything crazy and specific to say about it. If you go through testing bookmarks for your version, you wouldn't really have to contact support much unless you had something that's extremely detailed. Our setup here, for example, is pretty simple and we try to keep it that way. We have one for each server and it just does everything on its own.

Any questions that we have can just be answered by looking on the web. The answers are all right there for you to find in general.

Compared to what we had before, we now have ease of use. I can't say enough for that. It's best to go full cloud or even purchase the storage from Acronis rather than having an on-premises install where you have to purchase advanced licenses, only to go to the cloud. That is the challenge that I had with Actifio.

They provide you with regular training for partners.

The very first person that I interacted with was the local distributor. They were knowledgeable it was obvious that they had continuous training.

You are free to install this software on any hardware that you have, the challenge is the hardware itself, such as the media server with Commonvault. There is one called Quorum, which uses the OnQ operating system. They dictate the type of hardware you install in your backup, just like the DPS in Dell EMC. That way you don't run into issues with support.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Rely on the tech support department to help you implement it. They were a great help to me.

We've had some problems since we've implemented their system. We've actually had hardware problems with some of our servers. We have never had a backup fail because of the software. And even when we had a hardware problem, once we got it solved, their backup solution immediately kicked back in and started working. I don't have any complaints about it.

I just feel, like always, implementation and, sometimes, user interfaces could be a little bit easier, more straightforward. But I haven't used any of these products, either this one or its competitors, that I didn't feel that way about it. I just feel like they could be made a little bit more intuitive, and that's the only reason I didn't give it a 10.

I would say it's not a steep learning curve, but there's a learning curve, learning how you want it set up, because of the amount of options that you're given. It's good that you have a lot of different options. It's also bad that you have a lot of different options, because it is really easy for you to be able to make a selection that's not going to optimize your backup solution. So, I would say that as long as you know what you need, and you're familiar with the software, then you should not have many problems, with a little bit of learning/reading about the app before you use it.

I would say Acronis is about nine out of 10, overall. Some documentation or some wizards that would help you through the process, especially if you're new to the software, would benefit. I'm never going to give anybody a 10, so nine would be a 10, because everything can be improved. I don't believe in a 10.

I exclusively use Acronis True Image for my Windows backup needs, both in the enterprise and at home. I haven't found a better solution that allows me to interact with a server and schedule automated backups over the network. View full review »

If you're a small organization with little or no knowledge of the backup solution environment, it'll be okay for you.

I would rate it a seven out of 10.

Technical Presales - Server & Storage at a computer software company with 51-200 employees

We have recently started to sell Acronis solutions. We have been helping customers to understand what Acronis is all about. We give demos to our customers, and customers are quite happy with the demo and cost of Acronis. Overall, it is a good product.

I would recommend this solution for smaller environments. It is mostly being used in small companies. Enterprise customers also usually use it for small projects. I haven't explored it for customers with a really big environment. For big enterprise customers, there are other solutions, like Veritas NetBackup, that provide scalability and support for big infrastructures.

I would rate Acronis Backup an eight out of ten.

It depends on what you're going to use it for.

This solution fulfills all of our needs. Its reporting features work flawlessly and it does everything that it's supposed to do once it's setup, without maintenance or any additional time. It just works.

I would recommend it, but warn people new to it, to be aware that they might well be a bit frustrated at first.

I would rate Acronis Backup an eight out of ten. It's one of those products that probably needs an overhaul because it's kind of evolved over time and sometimes when you evolve things, you end up in a hole. It's probably about time for them to sit back and realize that they've made all this functionality and made all these changes so they should go back.

Also, managing the product is difficult. As a partner, it's difficult to manage our end-user clients because there's no single dashboard where we can go and see our clients and manage them individually. You have to set up an individual setup for each client, which is a bit frustrating.

I would like to see improvements for people that are probably doing an MSP type of approach, managed service providers so that they had a much simpler way to view their end-user situations.

This is a great product. When evaluating different products it is important to test the recovery from backup. Acronis provided better recovery from backup options than some other products that we evaluated.

Try all of the solutions in the market. You will see for yourself that Acronis is the easiest to use and stable. It has never failed on me.

I have everything I need in the backup or in the partition.

Most important criteria when selecting a vendor: Good support if I ever need it. Therefore I would know that I have someone to contact, especially when considering this is a backup, thus it is crucial for it work properly.

I bought this software for backup of workgroup based computers and it worked great for them. Scheduling was quite easy and the recovery process was awesome. Due to some power failure our 10 systems crashed which were recovered in few minutes by the Acronis recovery partition. However it lacks advance features like granular backup and data filtering hence unsuitable for enterprise level. View full review »

it's better to search for a solution from among the top vendors. Acronis is one of them. In any environment you need a backup solution and protection for disaster recovery. You need to use a solution to back up your servers and Active Directory, etc. Acronis is quite a good solution for that.

The most important criteria when selecting a vendor are the vendor's reputation and the quality of the solution.

One of the best data recovery tools available in the market. However, the installation consumes a lot disk space(1GB+), which results in slower system performance. It also lacks a Virus Scanning facility. Note that systems with Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) are not currently supported. It supports network based data backup and recovery, however network recovery quite often crashes the application. View full review »
