Acronis Cyber Protect Room for Improvement

The Acronis version 12.5 is no longer under support, which is a weakness. With the vendor Windows version and servers from 2019 and beyond, they no longer support Acronis 12.5.

Since we had a perpetual license for 12.5, we decided to renew our licenses to version 15 or move to Veeam.

In areas of improvement, we're hoping they will be a little bit more user-friendly so that our internal techs can pick up on them and that we don't need an external service provider to monitor them on a monthly basis.

To put it simply, if a customer, end user, or technical person encounters an issue and needs to consult with an Acronis support technician, the process can be too lengthy. This is an area that needs improvement. I will refrain from criticizing their support team as I am unfamiliar with their infrastructure.

All the necessary features are already included in the current version. All the necessary features required to set up a proper backup are already present in Acronis Backup. Therefore, there is no need to add any additional features to the product.

The solution's error handling can be improved specifically for Linux errors. I can tell what a lot of errors mean when I see them, but from a Linux perspective, it doesn't really tell us what it should be telling us. A lot of the errors will show us a Windows mapping instead of a Linux mapping. There's no documentation on that because it's not really something that has been looked at from a Linux perspective.

The licensing approach becomes intricate when dealing with SharePoint. Unlike individual user data, SharePoint data isn't bound to specific users; it's accessible by various users within the organization. Yet, they mandate a license for each user connected to SharePoint, irrespective of their level of utilization. This complexity raises concerns, particularly concerning the backup of SharePoint libraries. For example, if ten users access a SharePoint library, they assert that even if only one user is licensed, you must still procure licenses for all users to maintain compliance, even if they're not actively utilizing the service. Such a policy may pose compliance challenges, particularly when users intermittently access SharePoint data.

Comparatively, depending on the setup, it can be costly.

On the cloud side, security could always be better.

If you are taking a secondary backup on the cloud, more compression would be better. It would help reduce sizing.

I'm not certain how effective the solution would be for enterprise-level companies.

We'd like the ability to be able to restore on-premises. Right now, we can only restore on the cloud.

The pricing is significantly higher than it was last year, which is understandable since they have introduced new technology, such as transitioning from backup to cybersecurity. This has required a large investment in development, so it is reasonable for Acronis to raise the price. However, existing customers may be taken aback by the sudden price increase when they renew their accounts or licenses.

Talking about the Acronis Service Provider platform, I wish Acronis had a feature that would allow me to set an expiry date for created customers and issued licenses on both the "Per Workload" and "Per Gigabyte" options. This way, I could receive a reminder when a customer's subscription is about to expire without the need to integrate third-party tools. Unfortunately, this is not available in the service provider portal. This would be extremely helpful for service providers and should be included in the future.

Since Acronis stopped selling perpetual licenses, Acronis should take action to ensure that perpetual licenses are not functional if customers do not renew them. They should also strive to set reasonable renewal prices for perpetual licenses and create a mechanism to help us and customers who want to upgrade their licenses to subscription or service providers without being burdened with an exorbitant fee. It is clear that Acronis must review its pricing model and create a system that will make it easier for customers to upgrade without breaking the bank. We're losing customers due to the fact that there is a huge gap between renewing perpetual licenses and subscription licenses. On the other hand, perpetual licenses, which are valid for life, do not require renewal for the software to continue working. Therefore, customers may be hesitant to renew maintenance support for these licenses due to the higher cost even if they won't get any updates or support, but many of them still say that the software is stable enough for them and they don't need to renew. However, with a reasonable price, many customers are now renewing. With these significant price increases for their perpetual license renewal, I found it to be unreasonable. However, I have no issues with their subscription and service provider models. Acronis needs to find a way to address the price increases for their perpetual licenses.

We have issues with the SQL databases which are supported but not so successfully, it's a little shaky. It seems to tie up the use of the database, locking it to some extent. The big issue is that users are not able to access the databases when it's doing a backup. Some of our customers work around the clock and need continual access. The SQL backups have to work better so that they have MySQL or Maria support. We still use CloudBerry sometimes and it doesn't have that issue. It does the backup without tying up the database and it's still accessible to the user. That's something that Acronis have to improve. The other is the antimalware application, which is good in theory, but doesn't work so well. It uses a lot of resources and causes issues with some applications. That occurred when we switched from Webroot to Acronis Antimalware. In some instances, we had to go back to Webroot. There are some great concepts but not always such great executions.

Some of the default settings out-of-the-box should already be set up for the novice user. For instance, the warnings that say a hard drive has bad sectors and stops the backup from performing.

My suggestion would be to still give the warnings that there are bad sectors on the hard drive, but continue to backup. It could then offer the option of whether to stop backups, or stop them from performing.

During my first experience with backing up, I ended up coming across an error and the solution was to mark that checkbox that said, "Skip bad sector warnings." I didn't know that existed. It would just make it easier for first time users if no matter what, it would make a backup and just give you the warnings.

There are times when the backups are slow. A faster backup would be better.

The cloud faces a danger concerning data integrity. Briefly, the threat is to attack the integrity of data stored in the cloud. A hybrid solution that combines cloud storage with local storage on your DC server and provides a secure perimeter to protect data without alterations would be ideal. It's crucial that this solution also synchronizes with the cloud to prevent data from being distorted or stolen.

In terms of cybersecurity, if the offerings can be more versatile so that it is not just a backup solution, it would be great. Some addition to cybersecurity would really be helpful so that it becomes a kind of a suite of products. Backup and recovery form a part of the broader security strategy. Its integration with other cybersecurity solutions would provide proper visibility to not just your cybersecurity dashboard but also to all of your backups. You would have a pretty good view of the entire security landscape that you are managing.

It should definitely be more stable, and it should support larger platforms. It can maybe support cross-cloud implementations.

As far as the functionality goes, I haven't had a single issue with it. Rather, I've had some issues with the understandability of the interface. I think if they had someone with expertise in user interfaces to look at this, they could clean up the user interface. There are things that I had to do that aren't even in the normal software package. In other words, I had to go to their website and run some other tool, and I had to run it from the command line. I know how to do that, but I'd rather not have to. Granted, it was something that if I had done things right in the first place, I wouldn't have to do, but still I don't see any reason why they couldn't wrap up all their functionality in one user interface and be done with it.

The tool's dashboard for daily operations is useful, but I find that it could benefit from enhancements, particularly in terms of reporting. While exporting reports, the format is not fancy as it appears on the dashboard. The exported files are typically in Excel CSV or PDF format.

I don't know if this feature is already there or not, but when doing a backup from Microsoft 365, We have groups distribution list groups where we list all the users that we need to have the backup for. So if there's a way that we can pull the members of the group to be taken for a certain backup plan, that will be really because otherwise, I need to go and look for the users one by one, and it doesn't help when you have 500 or 1000 users.

One feature that I would like to see in the product is the ability to automatically uninstall or remove devices from the portal when they have been off for more than 30 days. Currently, there is a case where the device being off for an extended period indicates the employee has likely resigned.

The compatibility, i.e., the backups need capability with the version 11.7 to 11.5 which need to work together; currently, they don't work together at all. If you image a machine with version 11.7, then you cannot use an 11.5 image. It should be backwards compatible.

If an image is created using the Acronis Workstation Backup and Recovery version 11.5 and if you have a newly created boot disc with version 11.7 to restore that image back to another PC – you simply cannot. Every time an attempt is made to recover a machine using this method, it errors out.

The Acronis Workstation Backup and Recovery version 11.7 is not backwards compatible. So, in order to restore the image, I would have had to create the image originally with the version 11.7. This needs to be corrected or it would cause a lot of work for the tech to recreate ALL of their images using the 11.7 version. This can be a tedious process.

The newer version 12 was a little bit hard to set up and get licensed. When I went to version 12, the actual license page wouldn’t come up in an Internet Explorer browser, so we had to change to another browser as a workaround to get to the licensing page. That happened on at least two different installations of that version.

I haven’t worked with 12.5 yet, but this issue was on Version 12. I worked with technical support and we tried a couple of things, but then, that licensing page would always come up blank in Internet Explorer. Then, when we changed to a different browser, it did come up and we were able to license it.

Over the years they seem to have changed the interface to be more of a graphical interface and they have omitted the ability to use the interface using a keyboard only. When you are in a data center environment and you don't have a mouse with you, or for some reason the mouse is not working and you need to restore, it is extremely difficult/impossible.

If you don't have a mouse, there seems to be no way to move between the icons. In the old days it was compulsory to design software interfaces that were compatible with both the keyboard and mouse. You could press 'Alt-R' for restore and 'Alt-B' for backup, or something like that. Those functions have been removed from the product and it's very frustrating.

Another one feature I would like to see added is an agent to back up MySQL databases as well. They've got an agent to back up Microsoft SQL, but there is not an agent to back up MySQL databases.

Well, maybe in the installation part, got to do it just a little bit ... Maybe in the

installation part, if you can avoid a few things. Maybe the skip...The computer can back it up, each computer, without the username and password of the computer.
You are taking part of Microsoft Windows in order to do that thing, but if Acronis is managed through a license, can be installed without the Windows part. The security Windows part.

Do you know what I mean?

Each license has a number -- a really big number -- so Acronis can work without the Windows security. That's a very good point.

So it's gonna be faster and you will avoid a lot of problems of installation, because a lot of people don't have the technical knowledge to do it. So it's hard sometimes for the persons to do it. If you avoid that part, it's gonna be faster.

Because Acronis Backup is an on-premises solution, there is extra overhead. It's harder to manage, and there's no real remote access. You have to physically log in to the machine to manage it. The reporting feature works fine, and you will be able to send out reports. However, that is where it stops.

The deployment could be improved and could be through a network chain. If we need to deploy two machines that are not connected to the internet but connected to two different networks, it would be great to have a machine with dual mix that has access to the backup server and to those machines. It would be like a relay that you can install on the machine with a two-mix, and that machine can then connect to your backup server and to the other machines. You should be able to see the other machines on that network and be able to deploy to it and push jobs to it.

One improvement that could be made is adding the option to download files in a PST format when doing a 365 or Google Cloud to cloud backup. This is something that is currently being worked on by Acronis.

A second improvement would be to support SAP databases as integration with SAP. Although Acronis do support SAP databases and a backup of complete servers as an image-level backup or volume-level backup is possible, this requires the use of certain scripts.

It doesn't support all of the databases. Maybe in the future, it could support databases such as MySQL, or Postgres, as these are some of the customer's needs.

We are looking for IT solutions to backup all systems that our customers are using. It supports Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Exchange, but it does not support Oracle databases or Postgres.

There are many other types of databases that Acronis does not support.

I would like to see more mobile applications available. It would be very nice.

We would like Acronis as an all-in-one, or all-in-box solution. It should be sold as storage, licensing, and application all in one unit. We like to provide complete solutions to our clients rather than having to tell them that they must purchase additional storage. With Barracuda, the device D190 comes with one terabyte backup, and no additional requests have to be made to the customer.

It would be good if Acronis could get the recommended hardware.

The problem we face is competition. For the backup competition, we have Commvault, Veritas, Arcserve, and that kind of competition. The customers in Sri Lanka are mainly looking at Gartner records. Since Acronis is very new to the market, we can't compare it with those data center backup solutions, as they lead the way and get all the coverage. That's the main issue we are having. Apart from that, the feature set is very unique. We'd like it if Acronis Backup could focus a little bit on brand awareness in marketing.

If they can manage something like an STCM, or something that does mass deployment for software into the Cyber Protect console, it would be great. If we could have a mass deployment option using Acronis, that would be helpful.

Recently there was an event where I thought everything was working OK but, in part, the image wasn't good. It didn't give me a message telling me that the image didn't work properly. But that's very rare. Usually the backup works fine.

I would prefer that they not change the interface every time there is a new release. The best one was actually the one from 2009. It was very easy to use. But I just bought the server, 12.5, a couple of weeks ago. I had to call one of the technicians to help set it up. It was so complicated. And I still don't know how to use it. It's very, very complicated.

And you know, at the end of the day, we want things to work seamlessly, to work really quickly and easy. It's a shame they're making all these changes. We don't need them. They should improve the program without changing all these things, just add things.

If I could create a protected image backup on a computer partition that just would be just for the image backup; and only the program could access it to prevent viruses from getting into it. That would be very, very good.

We had few issues previously, however, when we raise a ticket with Acronis, we have a local partner.

There are some limitations to the backup. When the client does backups, we found some limitations when introducing computers to their backup - even just their site interface-level backups.

We had some incidents with Hyper-V environments. When we scheduled a backup, they had to open up Check Point before they're taking a backup. Yet, due to some issues, even though there were no any Check Points solutions at the server-side, it was still giving an error from the Acronis side saying there's a Check Point issue. The client, for some reason, cannot take a backup because of Check Point. I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed in the newer software or not. However, even just yesterday we updated to a new system and the client still has issues sometimes.

We had an incident when configuring reporting with Office 365. If the customer is using Office 365 through a cloud conveyor service, it gets a little difficult to configure the reporting part to get notifications to the customer.

In the next release, they need endpoint-level security. They say they're trying to build their system and product into something that will allow customers to not have to restore their backup. With more ransomware and other malicious attack protection, they could alert you to vulnerabilities. This is in the pipeline, or about to be released. I have yet to see any alerts as we just added the newest version yesterday.

Mobile backup is something that would be good to have. I can't think of anything else, but some performance enhancements and additional features would always be welcome.

I have no recommendations for improvement whatsoever. As far as I'm concerned, it's rock solid and I'm very pleased with it and I will continue to sell it and support it.

I have had an issue at times with support, because they weren't able to get to me and I've had to call back after an hour or so, but other than that, I can't be more pleased with the product.

I really can't suggest any room for improvement to be honest.

Any questions I might have, I call support which I am assuming is in India. But the support's been fantastic, they've been extremely helpful. I really don't have anything but praise. I've told people about the products.

The setup, the initial setup, does different kind of Windows servers and has different kind of agents for different scenarios. Sometimes the initial setup was a little bit complicated. Their customer service did a very good, did a very good job of helping. But it took a little while to get it all up and running. Once it got up and running, it seems have been stable.

They can include something called a backup appliance. Although Acronis is a software-driven company, it would be good for customers to have some kind of backup appliance on top of a lightweight operating system. This will also reduce the cost. Currently, the customers have to buy the hardware in addition to the operating system, which increases the overhead in terms of procurement.

Network Engineer at a manufacturing company with 51-200 employees

I have used it in the past. Not the same software, but the same company, and had success with it, and it was fairly easy to use. This one is much more complicated, but there are a lot more things involved in a backup. I have had issues with this one just in completing backups. Sometimes, for some reason, it has to run several times in order for it to do it completely, so I put in a ticket. We worked through it and it just seemed to solve itself, and neither one of us, neither the technician nor I, knew what it was doing or why it did, it but it fixed itself.

I also think the fact that it is extremely customizable means that it's really easy to get something wrong, and it not work as intended. So I would say, if there was a wizard that would lead you down a road, when creating a backup, that would probably be better than having to go online or call somebody to actually do a backup. It's not intuitive whenever you're trying to do something. You don't know whether you need to make a plan first or whether you need to make a backup first, it really depends on what you're trying to do and you really can't do that without asking somebody a question.

The problem that I've had would be more along the lines of it connecting to something else to back it up. For example, I'm currently having a problem with the way, when you have to select a network, I can't select a network location. I have to map a drive on the server, and then I have to select the mapped drive in order for it to put the backup out there.

I can't say this location is where it needs to go. I actually have to map a drive instead of going, "Just go to this IP address, this shared location, and put it here," I can't do that. It won't take it. I have to actually map a drive and put it in there for it to go, "Okay." If for some reason there's something wrong with that map, then the backup can't go there, even though I can ping the location, I can pull up the location, the software doesn't do that.

Or, if it does do that, I don't know how to get it to do that, which I would say would be my complaint with it, the fact that there's not a lot of intuitive ways to be able to do something. In other words, it expects you to have the knowledge of how to operate it in order to set it up. If it's giving you a yes or no question and you don't know what this means, whatever that question is - "Do you want to do this, yes or no?" - if you don't know what "this" means or what "this" does, then I don't know how to answer that question

The problem is I can't select Help and it says, "Okay, if you're doing this, this is what you need to do. Or, this is for this, so if you want this, select yes. If you want this, select no." There's none of that. There's just me saying, "I don't know what this means." So, then I have to google it, try to figure it out.

If there was a wizard that would say,

- "What are you trying to do?"

- "I want to do a backup like this."

- "Is it going to be offsite, online, another server?"

It would create the configuration by asking questions through the wizard. This is what Microsoft has been doing for decades. That's how their stuff gets set up correctly. If Acronis had one of those - and it might, I just don't know how to get to it, or to start it - for it do the stuff for you, that would be a big thing for me.

In some cases, at the time of reinstallation, some disasters happen. For the licensing on the computer the name of the computer and domain, everything is removed from the registry level. Then we have to install the Acronis from the start for it to work properly. Otherwise, the Acronis software will cause a lot of trouble at the time of reinstallation. That's where they need to improve the product. In the case people want to install the same software with the same hardware, it should not stop me.

Acronis Standard software should improve the backup log report.

For some customers, it doesn't just depend on the type of product that you use, but on the infrastructure of the customer as well. Some customers don't have the potential or the infrastructure to support a cloud-based solution as a backup. That's why he had to go to on-premises and use a hybrid solution, which is why using SolarWind for our customers.

So for smaller companies, it's a little more challenging to maintain. But it's hard to say because you could have a very small company, but they have the potential of moving everything using a cloud infrastructure because they have the local infrastructure ready to support that kind of service. But another company may not have the infrastructure to support that kind of service. There are many factors for what kind of services are good for one customer and not good for another one, including the speed of data transfer that the customer can allow. That will determine if you're going to use a backup cloud solution versus a hybrid solution.

Actually, with Acronis, you can back up almost everything that you need to back up, including the engine database. So I don't see what else we could add to that solution for improvement.

When I look from the customer's perspective, everything is there. What could be good is just to have a simple package that could be appropriate for small companies who don't have the requirements for using the cloud solution. Maybe they could just have something a little more on-premises that could allow Acronis to do the customer's backup and then bring it to the cloud. That could be something that Acronis could try because everything now seems to be going to the cloud.

We're based in Hong Kong and I think if Acronis could provide local support and some local consultants that would be an improvement. I've just carried out the trial on the solution and actually there is no technical support available for this product. There is also minimal documentation available and if that could be improved it would make a big difference.

Adding a physical storage appliance would be very good, as would the placement of massive HDD to generate the boot CD. It would nice if it was more accessible and enlarging the option to not have an agent such as on hypervisors, VMware, and others. This would mean we could avoid installing an agent on the virtual machines.

Right now I'm using Acronis 2016, and it's a lot harder to do restore. If you're using one computer, sometimes you want to just back up an external hard drive. It is harder to use than the previous ones I've used.

I would like to get some RAID compatibility and maybe UEFI. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. If you could get those things working perfect, that'd be great.

It takes a long to backup data using Acronis backup and recovery v11 and I found Acronis support not really helpful as they always suggest to update the software instead of solving the issue with the current version. I would prefer if Acronis would look into their old version and try to enhance it, rather than use new functions on the new version, I would rather stick with the older version.

The software requires a number of network ports to be open between the management machine and the clients and backup devices. It would be good to eliminate the SMB port requirement between the management machine and the backup device.

It would also be helpful to reduce the number of required ports between the clients and the management machine to just one incoming and/or outgoing port.

Bare metal recovery of a machine from backup requires hard drive drivers to be manually loaded. It would be helpful if the various hard drive drivers were included in the recovery boot media.

Sometimes backups become corrupted and can not be access via the Recovery Console, You can send the backups too Acronis support (Could take months depending on the size of the backup) and they will try to recover the data, however rarely do. Installation is resource hungry. 1) Installation is a lengthy process and consumes a lot of disk space. 2) Data backup time is comparatively higher than other similar products out there in the market. 3) The UI is not very user friendly and first time users will definitely struggle to get through. 4) PC to PC synchronization feature requires the end user to login using their Acronis accounts. This slows down the overall synchronization process. 5) Decrypting the data before reading from disk image slows down the overall process of data recovery. 6) There are many products in the market, which do similar things at a cheaper rate.
