Amazon AWS Stability

Cloud Security Architect at Capgemini
In terms of stability, the first impression is whatever services we have provisioned in the AWS cloud, we've never caught any issues where we needed to reach out to the Amazon support team. There is no downtime, for example. There are no application crashes. We don't need to plan any high availability or disaster recovery for any of our servers. In regards to that, Amazon is doing a very good job of offering good performance and reliability.
It offers good stability, we didn't have any issues with it.

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten. Maybe some technology gap, which we don't know is there.

It offers good stability capabilities. We haven't encountered any issues or downtimes.

Stability is guaranteed because the stability depends on how you design your solution.
AWS has what's called the shared responsibility model. It simply means there's the work of you, the customer, and the job of AWS as a cloud provider. They handle the physical infrastructure, but you, the customer, need to be able to set up the application in such a way that if anything breaks, you can stabilize it.
If you're designing your infrastructure using, for example, there are several factors you need to consider when designing your infrastructure, like scalability, security, etc. There are about six of them.
So, you need to take all of those factors into consideration when designing your infrastructure. Because if you don't design it well, it could fail. So you have to design it so that it shouldn't fail.
The onus is not entirely on AWS for you to have a stable infrastructure. You need to design your infrastructure properly, and then AWS manages the physical side of things. But overall, it's a stable cloud provider. That's why they're number one.

When you have complex deployments, such as with more than two availability zones, there are reliability, and resiliency options that are complex to implement and expensive. Providing stability or more complex deployments is possible, but very expensive.

Services are pretty good stability-wise. They've got great redundancy. The one thing I would tweak them is when you're within the region or zone, they make it more difficult for you to do redundant zones, without carrying the IP addresses over seamlessly. That is a little bit of a sticking point, so you could have remote redundancy with the addressing there with it even outside of the AZ's. That would be a lot easier than having to go through the programming of it.

AWS is generally reliable, but we've seen a lot of issues lately, so I would say they have some room for improvement. For example, if the user doesn't configure something correctly, it might fail. Even if AWS is reliable, that doesn't guarantee that all the users will be reliable. They need to make the design foolproof.

We are pretty happy with the stability.
The only issue that we have encountered is when Amazon had problems with one of their availability zones that impacted half of the world. We found that we were impacted as well, but it wasn't that difficult for us because we already had a solution with multiple zones. We had a minimal outage, as we were swapping from one server to another. It took less than ten minutes for us, so we were pretty pleased.
There was some new learning in terms of IOPS on the EBS storage. The concept of burstable IOPS was new and we did have a few outages when we ran out of IOPS. After moving to provisioned IOPs for the EBS we have not faced any issue.
Once the IOPs are used up, it takes a long time for the burst balance to be filled up. The only option is to move the data to another disk. This causes downtime. It would be better if we could continue to use at the baseline IOPs.

Enterprise Solutions Executive (AWS Certified Solutions Architect) at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
The solution is stable. That said, there are some instances that some of the services in some of the regions might go down. The downtime sometimes will last longer than you expected. We expect that occasionally the downtime maybe a few minutes or half an hour. That's not always the case. Sometimes it can be hours. Sometimes it can even be half a day. For us, the downtime is a problem.
