Amazon EC2 Valuable Features

Alex Kabugo - PeerSpot reviewer
System Engineer at Wipro Limited

The most valuable feature is the security group. It's the security group.

Additionally, the key management and the entire provisioning system, including the Windows instances, contribute significantly. They are among the main aspects that I find valuable in EC2.

My favorite feature of this solution is the flexibility of instance types, which allows for the cost to be tailored to the usage amount and type.

The feature I found most valuable is flexibility in being able to increase resources. It's the most powerful feature. We can increase EC2's resources with just a few simple clicks. We can handle this through the AWS console. It's easier than handling it on a hardware department section or hiring middleware engineers to manage the infrastructure.

My impression is that this is the main power feature of EC2. Before this feature was launched, we would have needed to contact another department or buy hardware. It was quite troublesome. Now, it's on-demand and flexible.

What I found most valuable in Amazon EC2 is that you only pay for what you use, versus an on-premise deployment that requires you to pay for the cost of the server. When it's on-premise, you'll need to meet more specifications and requirements, and the purchasing process even takes time. As Amazon EC2 is cloud-based, you'll only pay when you use the service.

The most valuable feature of Amazon EC2 is its ability to spin a new virtual machine in a few seconds. Another valuable feature of the solution is the auto-scaling group, wherein if one machine has a problem, another machine will be built by itself.

EC2 provides a lot of flexibility. If you don't want to have a separate on-premise database, you can put it on the cloud with EC2. You can adjust the instance type according to your needs. You select a size and get a certain amount of specific memory, CPUs, etc. You set the redirect limit, and from there, you install the software, database servers, application servers, and whatever you want.

The time to Live is minimal. I can quickly create a VM instance with just one click.

I can reduce costs by using fewer instances with a lower workload. In the event of a sudden spike in demand, Amazon EC2 auto-scales, allowing me to pay for the increased load flexibly.

Amazon EC2 is really reliable and provides great flexibility. It provides on-the-fly scalability, which means I can change the computation of Amazon EC2 on the fly. It is based on a pay-as-you-go model. I can turn it on when I want to use the solution and turn it off when I don't want to use it. I won't be charged for it when I turn it off. Amazon EC2 provides great backups, where I can do daily and weekly backups. If anything gets corrupted, I can restore it using the backup.

The features depend on the use cases. We have different family types for computing. There is the R series for databases. For general purposes, there are the N series and the C series. RCE is for DL based kinds of things.

The features I find valuable are EC2, the admin control, and the ability to add the elastic IPs and then attach storage; all of those features are valuable. Also, the Admin Control, Cost Explorer, and the billing features are valuable. That gives me the ability to understand the costs. Amazon AWS has some savings plans.

In cloud computing, people think the cloud is cheap, but you need to know how to use it and configure the right plans.

AWS Cost Explorer and the billing features are also valuable.

S3 buckets and fast storage are also very nice features.

The features that I have found most valuable are that we can increase the storage of EC2. This is very helpful because sometimes when it comes to data transformation in far transfer, it gets really big because of the number of clients we have. Then we have to find a way to sort out archive data, etc.

It really makes it easy to either transfer data as an S3 bucket or increase the drive storage on the server. That is really useful. Another thing I really like about the services is that you can install Trend Micro Security on it. Most of the AWS services have gone with Trend Micro Security, which you can get installed on it. It helps to protect the servers and gives you that additional level of security.

I like the AMI-related features. A very good feature of this solution is the customizable AMI. It is a very good feature provided by Amazon. The encryption technologies are also very good. We are using KMS, etc.

Load balancing of EC2 is another good feature. If we have a group of EC2s, automated load balancing or auto-scaling is there. Auto Scaling features are very good features.

The connectivity with on-prem is also very much supported. We didn't face any problems there. We had a requirement to integrate with the Control-M system, which transfers the files from one system to another system. For some reason, we were not able to use the ready-made or out-of-box feature provided by Amazon. We had to basically simulate the whole thing with EC2, and we didn't face any problems with this integration.

Another good feature is that we can go and create EC2 over the cloud service. It has also been very useful for data science purposes.

The most valuable features are the scalability options, low maintenance, and options to upgrade. AWS support is also pretty good. The generation upgrade is pretty simple and standardized. Earlier when I gave a review, we were struggling with it, but now the process is straightforward and standardized. We would love it to be automated, but the way it is right now is okay.

I like that we can change the configuration whenever we need. We can scale up our requirement so that if we want to add more CPU, we can do it. If we want to add more memory or backup features, we can do that. We're also able to configure some elastic file system so that we can extend the memory or the space in which we want to store the data. That elasticity is quite a dynamic configuration of the machine and a feature we use often. Amazon provides good tutorials and free access to them for a year.

The most valuable feature is EC2 is scalable, so when you want to move to market, you don't need to wait until your provision is fast, you can just go and provision it and then easily install your application. We can also size the instances correctly based on our requirements, so for example, there are multiple instance types and families, and we can choose according to the requirement, which is very convenient.
