I like how quickly the solution can be implemented

Pros and Cons

  • "The features that I have found most valuable are the ease of use, the rapidness, how quickly the solution can be implemented, and of course that it's been very easy to move from the on-premise world to the Cloud world because Snowflake is based on SQL also."
  • "It would benefit from an administration that allows you to be aware of your credit consumption once you have the service so that you may be sure how many credits you are consuming when you use the platform and to make sure that you are making the most efficient use of these resources. In other words, to improve their interface so that you may monitor the consumption of your credits on Cloud."

What is our primary use case?

We are a consulting company so our primary use depends on the niche that we are providing the services to and on which of the different versions they have. I think we are mainly using Snowflake Enterprise.

In general, it is being used for integrating information. Snowflake is a database platform, it gives information to support analytic needs, such as advanced data analytics like machine learning. In some of those cases it is also used for descriptive analytics, for instance BI.

How has it helped my organization?

One of example of how Snowflake has improved a client's organization is the democratization, it makes information available to more of the users.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are the ease of use, the rapidness, how quickly the solution can be implemented, and of course that it's been very easy to move from the on-premise world to the Cloud world because Snowflake is based on SQL also.

What needs improvement?

I think that the area of improvement with Snowflake is to improve the administration. It would benefit from an administration that allows you to be aware of your credit consumption once you have the service so that you may be sure how many credits you are consuming when you use the platform and to make sure that you are making the most efficient use of these resources. In other words, to improve their interface so that you may monitor the consumption of your credits on Cloud.

I also heard from a company we work for that it could be more user-friendly because it provides some tools but they are not user-friendly.

Additionally, it would be very helpful if Snowflake integrated machine learning and some other advanced analytics features within their language or product capabilities. Right now, they do it through some other company where you have to buy these capabilities from other vendors. There are some customers that don't have complex needs for machine learning or advanced analytics so they don't have to buy it from another vendor but can use it from the product itself if they have it.

For how long have I used the solution?

The whole company has been using Snowflake for about three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, so far it is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Snowflake is very scalable. Our client companies where we implement Snowflake are medium to large sized. These companies have offices in different parts of the world, not just some regions, but companies with office users in different parts of the world. We are dealing with international companies. Their tendency is to increase the use of the Snowflake platform. It would serve all the analytical needs in these companies.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not directly experienced the technical support. It's not part of my job to be involved on those kind of issues, but we constantly receive information as a partner from them and we are very in good touch with them and with the people we are working with, meaning the representatives that are within the Latin American market, which is where I work. They are very open and very fast with communication.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. Full deployment takes a few weeks. The initial deployment for the first initiatives might take weeks. It's not complex, really. You may have it loaded after a full day and already providing results or interacting, but there are some other companies that have to be implemented to extract and consume the information from the database. But it's very easy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

There have been a couple of other solutions that we've been participating in the evaluation process of and some others that have been included in the decision process, including Redshift from AWS and also Azure Synapse from Microsoft.

For instance, AWS Redshift looked like it was easier to implement and to be adopted by the technical users, the programmers and database programmers. So far it has been far easier to adapt this technology. I'm not saying that AWS is a better technology. It's very complex, but at least what I've seen is that for them, it looks like it's been easier to use the first time.

We liked that Snowflake is able to be used as a multi-Cloud service - it can be used in AWS Cloud, Azure Cloud, or Google Cloud. Whereas AWS, or even Synapse, can only be used in their corresponding networks.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend Snowflake.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Snowflake an eight.

I give it an eight out of 10 due to its room for improvement in the user interface for the monitoring of the credit consumption and that the user experience is not friendly. And also because the machine learning is lacking some advanced analytic features.

Stable and user-friendly but technical support needs improvement

Pros and Cons

  • "The useability, the user interface, is very user-friendly."
  • "The initial setup is complex."

What is most valuable?

The stability of the solution is pretty good. It's one of the solution's most valuable aspects.

The useability, the user interface, is very user-friendly.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs to improve its integration capabilities. It needs better integration with SQL and other databases.

The initial setup is complex.

The product needs to implement more machine learning and artificial intelligence.

If they had more IoT and streaming capabilities, it would be helpful.

The product could use more analytics tools.

It would be helpful if we could use the product with less coding.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Normally, the solution is quite stable. The performance is pretty good. We don't regularly deal with issues. It doesn't crash or freeze, and I can't recall any bugs or glitches.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale, however, it is expensive to do so. If a company wants to expand, it will have to pay. Therefore, they should be prepared for that.

Currently, we have about 200 people using the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't have a direct relationship with the technical support when I have a problem. They aren't very good. We aren't satisfied with the level of support we get.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not too straightforward. It's rather complex. We had to get some outside assistance.

The deployment process took us about three months. It was a while.

What about the implementation team?

We hired a consultant to help us with the implementation of the solution.

What was our ROI?

I don't have exact KPIs on this, however, I need to improve the sizing in order to improve our ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The is a monthly licensing fee. I can't speak to how much we actually pay, however.

There is just one fee. You do not have any more costs over and above that.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

While we didn't previously evaluate other options, in 2021, we need to explore the other solutions. I intend to look at the Amazon and Google Cloud platforms as other options.

What other advice do I have?

We are both partners and end-users of the product. We use it internally and we use it with some of our clients.

I would caution new users that there is one parameter they need to watch carefully. That is the size of the data warehouse. If you don't configure this parameter to be as small as possible, your costs will be quite high.

I would rate the solution at a seven out of ten. It's a stable platform, however, the price model is questionable in comparison to Amazon and Google and the contact with support is a problem for me.

Improved my organization's functionality and performance

Pros and Cons

  • "It has improved my organization's functionality and performance."
  • "We are looking for a cheaper deployment for the solution. Although we did a lot of benchmarks, like Redshift. We tried Redshift, it didn't work. It didn't work out for us as well."

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved my organization's functionality and performance.

What is most valuable?

You don't have any more dependency on the local store. In order to build the on-prem process for Vertica, you need to make a lot of changes and be picky about choosing your hardware for it. On Eon, you just put it on S3, so you're not paying a penny for the stores anymore. That's the good thing about Eon.

What needs improvement?

We are looking for a cheaper deployment for the solution. Although we did a lot of benchmarks, like Redshift. We tried Redshift, it didn't work. It didn't work out for us as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Vertica since 2009.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

When you're on-prem, you're always worried about losing your nodes. It was hard to restore especially when you have big data.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability has been amazing. We have seen a lot of improvement. We have developers and we have a production demo. We have hosted clusters for customers, we have deployed customer scope. I can scribe them by petabytes. I can scale them by the number of users. It depends on the customers. For one project we can have 15 to 20 consecutive users, but they deal with petabytes of storage.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their support is really bad. Maybe Micro Focus has changed but they were not good before. They weren't really responsive. We've never had good support.

I would rate it a three out of ten. I met with them two months ago. They asked why we didn't renew our support. They wasted a lot of our money. We've had really bad experiences with Vertica.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Oracle and we decided to go for big data.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward for me, it's not complex at all. You need to be at least a bit of a database administrator and really get certified on Vertica in order to use it.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to someone considering Vertica is to go for it.

Nothing is missing. I would rate it a ten out of ten.

The only issues are support and the price.

It is a good data management system and the setup is easy and straightforward

Pros and Cons

  • "I really like the auto-tuning, auto-scaling, and the automatic load balancing and query tuning in the system."
  • "I would like to see an on-premise solution in the future."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case of this solution is as a data management system for analytics.

What is most valuable?

I really like the auto-tuning, auto-scaling, automatic load balancing, and query tuning in the system.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution only for a couple of weeks or months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is quick to answer but sometimes it takes too long to get a competent person on the line.

How was the initial setup?

If you are familiar with Oracle products, the initial setup is easy and straightforward. The deployment took only a few hours because it is on the cloud.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Other options out there are Microsoft Azure Data Warehouse and AWS Redshift. Anyone who has to deal with analytics, to get the processes, marketing processes, and financial processes working, should consider a data warehouse solution because a data warehouse solution is always the underlying infrastructure for good analytics.

What other advice do I have?

I would like to see an on-premise solution in the future. There are other very good solutions in the market, so if I would rate it a ten, it would be the best in the market. I, therefore, rate this solution an eight out of ten.
