Apache Spark Customer Service and Support

Ilya Afanasyev - PeerSpot reviewer

We have an internal team, and they participate in process of developing Spark. They are Spark contributors, and if we have some problems, we turn to them. It's our own people, yet they work with Spark. Generally, if the problem is more minor, we look at some sites or have some discussion about Spark or internal guys who have experience with Spark.

In the community forums, I asked questions a while back when I was new. However, the responses came from other users in the community, not the official Apache Spark organization. So, I am not sure about the proficiency.

Since it's open-source, most questions happen in the community. For enterprise support, I imagine the response speed would be different.

I contacted customer service and support six or seven years ago when Spark was still on version 1.6.

We were struggling with memory limitations and the need for a lift and shift mechanism in a hybrid cloud mode. I contacted one or two people at that time.

We use Cloudera distribution, so we ask Cloudera for support, which is not open-source.

Apache Spark is an open-source tool, so the only support users can get for the tool is from different vendors like Cloudera or HPE.

To rate my overall experience, I would give it an eight out of ten, leaving room for potential improvements in terms of technical support.

Apache Spark is open-source, there is no team that will give you dedicated support, but you can post your queries on the community forums, and usually, you will receive a good response. Since it's open-source, you depend on freelance developers to respond to you, you cannot put a time limit there, but the response, on average, is pretty good.

We haven't contacted Apache Spark support directly because it's an open-source tool. However, when using it as a product within Databricks, we've contacted Databricks support for assistance.

There isn't really technical support for open source. You need to do your own studying. There are lots of places to find information. You can find details online, or in books, et cetera. There are even courses you can take that can help you understand Spark.

If you pay for customer support then you get a quick and efficient response, otherwise the community support offers good help.

We have not used Apache support. We have only used Cloudera support for this project, and they helped us a lot during the development cycle of this project.

There is no official support for this solution. Because it's open-source and there is no cost involved, there is nobody to contact for support. Our own internal team of experts, which work on different problems, both support and contribute to the platform.

I have to say it is bad. I can only ask for help in the Google group. However, it is run in the developer-for-developer style. There are almost no people from databricks. I also use a Cassandra-Spark-connector, and Datastax has at least one dedicated person to help the community.

This is an open source technology and is dependent on community support. The Apache Spark community is vibrant and it is easy to find answers to questions. The enterprises can also get commercial support from Hadoop vendors such as Cloudera. I recommend enterprises to inspect Hadoop vendors’ commitment to open source as well as their ability to curate Apache Spark technology into the rest of the ecosystem before signing up for a commercial support or subscription.
