Appian Initial Setup
Not everyone can do the implementation of the solution, it requires specialized people. It is easy for qualified people.
The duration it takes to implement the solution depends on a lot of factors, such as how many workflows are required. A typical implementation can take four to six weeks.
I rate the initial setup of Appian a six out of ten.
View full review »Its initial setup is a little bit more on the complex side. It takes more of a data engineer mindset to set it up the right way. The benefit of a low code tool should be that you can put it in the hands of business users and let them scale with it. From the frontend perspective, it is really good, but when you have to go into the data and actually integrate it, it takes a dedicated IT team to really set it up. I'm not sure if there is much they can do to fix that because it really takes domain expertise to set up data sources, but that's the blocker that we've seen.

Usually, what we use, is Appian Cloud. That's provided (or set up) by Appian itself. If we talk about the Appian deployment from the lower environment to the upper environment, from the development perspective, and developer perspective, it's very quick. They have in-built DevOps, so it's a one-click deployment from the lower version to the upper version.
The initial setup is straightforward. It's pretty easy. It's not complex.
View full review »The initial setup is straightforward. When compared with other solutions, Appian is much faster. It is easy to install. It is simple to transfer from the cloud, allowing you to get started immediately with the solution.
The process took us two days. If someone were implementing on-premises, it may take longer.

Appian was quick to deploy. It took a very short time because my organization has the SaaS version.
Its initial setup was not complex. It has been a pretty straightforward installation for the most part. There have been a few changes over the years in the support of app servers, and they've improved the functionality. Initially, it needed more work, but recently, they have added a lot of functionalities to be able to deploy quickly and migrate the code between environments. There used to be a few more steps previously, whereas now, it takes just a few clicks to get the code from one environment to another and finally into production.

The deployment of projects depends on the data I work with or the projects I deploy. A simple project will happen fast. A more complex project will take longer. Typically it takes a day or two. A more complex deployment may take a week.
I use orchestrators during the deployment. I simply need to develop a process in the studio first and then I need to activate the robot and connect it with the orchestrator.

The initial implementation is very straightforward and simple. It's not overly complex or difficult. It's a five out of five in terms of the ease of setup.
The implementation strategy is the Appian standard implementation strategy, as it is a SaaS.
The time it takes to set up varies. For small features, it can take up to two weeks, and larger ones can take months. Usually, it's a fifth or tenth of that time if a company is doing a standard setup.
The amount of maintenance depends on what your strategy is for deployment. If you're going into transformation and you're going to migrate a lot of business processes in the organization, you need to do it in parallel so, you'll have to employ enough personnel to do it. For a simple solution, two, three, or four people will suffice.

It depends on the functionality that we are using. For instance, having an LMS solution for our clients is a bit straightforward. Sometimes, clients expect us to implement ERP using Appian, which is very complicated. In such cases, I don't believe that Appian is a good tool for that.

We use one person, the architect, to maintain the program.

The setup is not completely straightforward but not too complex either. The deployment itself wasn't too difficult, but this is something where features evolve and the things within it over time start moving. Adapting to any new feature while continuing to work is not simple. It makes things more complex. There are around 5,000 people using the product and we have five people dealing with maintenance.

If you do the setup, there is a bit of a learning curve you have during the initial setup. On the cloud, the deployment is much easier. They spin it up for you and manage it for you. It's less work. For the on-premises deployment, I'd rate the ease of setup six out of ten. It took a few months to deploy. Cloud deployment, of course, is much easier since there really is nothing to do. We deployed over a weekend.
We deploy every month. It takes a couple of minutes to deploy the latest features.
We run a lean show and only have about five people dealing with the solution. There's an architect, two engineers, and a few QAs.

Complex: Data strategy and authorization to push data to the cloud was a big hurdle. How organizational data is going to be pushed to Appian, updated by Appian, and pushed back to the organization with or without approval steps needs to be planned and executed strategically.

We did not find the initial setup complex. Our engineers, who handled the implementation, found it to be quite straightforward.
The deployment process was fast. I can't recall the exact number of hours it took, however, it was not a drawn-out process.
Maintenence seems to be minimal, however it would be helpful if there was someone on staff to maintain it as needed.

View full review »Appian has two offerings for its customers, on-premise and Appian Cloud (PaaS). In the case of PaaS, setup is very minimal and straightforward. For the on-premise product, the initial setup is pretty straightforward in most cases but requires a level of systems expertise, especially if you are setting up a high-performance production machine.
After some initial use, tuning the database is advisable. For mission-critical applications, an initial round of stress testing may be a good idea for identifying potential bottlenecks in your applications. Setup can also be tricky if you try to migrate from very old installations which used a different topology. If this is your situation, you may need support from Appian Professional Services.

It's quite easy and fast specifically for a new client to onboard an Appian solution or Appian platform. It would be more like quick provisioning, primarily for all the environments involved. Appian is actually providing services also with the cloud set up.
Deployment depends on the complexity of the application. One or two people could deploy Appian given the circumstances of the full visibility or full awareness.
