ArcSight Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) Pricing

Pricing is good, I'd rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with ten being low price.

It's better than Splunk and IBM QRadar because their pricing is based on EPS (Events Per Second). Overall, ArcSight's pricing model and subscription model are favorable compared to the other SIEM tools we use.

The pricing model is expensive compared to open-source alternatives, especially as your needs grow.

The solution is super expensive. I think we're paying about 1.2 million a year. We have a full, perpetual, all-we-can-eat license, which is why we pay that, because at any moment we may onboard entirely new infrastructures.

The problem with QRadar is that you're paying EPS licensing, and the moment you exceed your licensing, QRadar stops processing anything above that license count, and that becomes an immediate security event. With our license with ArcSight, we don't have that problem. You pay for all-you-can-eat and we can give it all-we-can-eat, as long as the hardware that we have running it can support it. The hardware is ours, so we can just grow that as we go.

Part of our yearly price model is also including extra blade servers and disks, so as we need them, we can just slap them in, and boom, we expand the cluster by three or four more processing nodes on the blade server, and now we can double the amount of queries and searches.

At our organization size and license model, I think the price is average to what anyone else would charge us. I would rate the price as a five out of ten because obviously we would like to be cheaper, but we know what we're getting for that money, so we're okay with that. We're neutral about the price.

The licensing cost is affordable if you get an enterprise license. The licensing is based on EPS, so you can probably provide a package of license for multiple ESMs with their correlational end fees. It is cost-effective.

Licensing depends on what type of customer you are. There will be licenses for each and every appliance. There will be three types of appliances like ESM, ArcMC, and Logger. For these three components, you need to buy a separate license.

Customers without a ton of resources to dedicate to deployment may be better served by a managed ArcSight service. A lot of the complex setup and administration duties are more effectively offloaded to a provider who can operate within an economy of scale to mitigate them.

I rate ArcSight ESM six out of 10 for affordability. In my last company, I evaluated Sentinel. The annual license for ArcSight is equal to about two months of Sentinel.

ArcSight's price is reasonable. That's why our company was forced to buy this. It's cheaper than some of the better solutions.

Price is fair compared to other SIEMs (Splunk, QRadar, etc.). It's not the go-to product if you are looking for something cheap. Go for ArcSight, if it provides specific features that your IS requires.

HPE ArcSight pricing might be more expensive than other SIEM solutions, but in my opinion it has powerful features and great flexibility in developing complex use cases. So, in my opinion, it's worth trying first (via PoC, for example) before making any decision based on cost.

Do not scale out (horizontally) too quickly. A good box can handle a lot of EPS. You will not need to buy more licenses if you use one box in a good way. Also, aggregation can help a lot in pushing down licensing costs.

In order to avoid huge licensing costs, you should use pre-filtering of events, outside the ArcSight solution. We did this for Cisco ASA firewalls, Microsoft TMG proxies, etc. Of course, this approach may not work, if you have regulatory constraints and have to collect everything.
