AWS Database Migration Service Valuable Features

The most valuable feature is live replication at the cheapest price. GoldenGate also has a live application, but it is probably three times more costlier than what AWS provide.

What I like about AWS Database Migration Service is that it is available on the cloud, and you don't need any admins. If you want the backup then you can store it online directly. With the product in place, users can focus on what they want to do, and there is no need to do a lot of maintenance as there are no complications that arise in the tool. It is a maintenance-free product.

The most valuable feature of the solution is the one I use for report generation. The security risk is very low.

If your infrastructure is already on Amazon, it simply makes the most sense to use a tool officially provided by them as an additional service, rather than having to rely on a third-party solution.

On the other hand, if you have a custom infrastructure and you want to migrate to Amazon, it also makes thing much easier to integrate. The way it works is brilliant, and it's based on similar logic to Oracle's GoldenGate migration tool in that you can migrate everything from data tables to schemas from one database to another. So in most situations where you would need to migrate to Amazon, the best way is by using AWS DMS.

The wide variety of integrations that are possible is a significant benefit. In addition to our Kinesis integration we were also setting up a data warehouse solution with the Redshift integration.

The support for IaC solutions (Terraform, CloudFormation) leaves something to be desired compared to other AWS services, but is a critical feature.

The main thing why people are going behind AWS is the cost.

For example, on the current project, I am working with an insurance company. So the basic thing is they want to accomplish whatever add-on services AWS provides, but they don't want to go all in a single step. Plus, they want to see what the platform is. Then they look step by step. So, it is an incremental adoption kind of thing.

So, we are helping and enhancing our knowledge of that.

What I find most valuable in AWS Database Migration Service are these features: the full load and continuous data replication to heterogeneous endpoints.

For our simple requirement of migration, DMS is just a typical AWS RDS with an IPSec tunnel to Oracle. The most valuable features for us are the networking capabilities like VPCs and VPNs.

Currently, we're happy with DMS because it's simple and meets our needs. We're still syncing the data, but once that's done, we'll cut off the AWS database. Compared to Oracle GoldenGate, DMS is definitely easier to use. We haven't encountered any major difficulties.

What I like about AWS Database Migration Service is that it's a good product that allows you to migrate terabytes of data. My team was able to migrate almost 16TB of data using AWS Database Migration Service. The solution works fine for my use case.

The database migration services allow us to do real-time synchronization of on-premise and database to plan out our releases. We do prod testing to keep the prod data in sync, at the same time, not expose it much. The automation of this synchronization helps us ensure the data is consistent in both AWS and on-prem. Then we can switch over wherever you need it. Parallely, we can do production performance testing and user experience testing without actually writing a lot of code. It comes out of the box. It is one feature that we like a lot.

The other feature I like is schema migration. When we want to upgrade it to MySQL, we can easily upgrade it. It is another stack. We haven’t used database migration. We can use it if we want to move from Oracle to PostgreSQL. It also comes as an out-of-the-box solution. I think these three things are very good. However, we have not used database migration yet because we do not plan to install software yet. The solution has a good feature stack.

Prior to the migration, during the earlier stages, we had a lot of problems. SCT is a migration tool provided by Amazon that helps us to convert the schema.

We have an in-built tool provided by Amazon. It is a database migration tool that supports a smooth migration. The solution is instantaneous. We can launch the service and reduce the end number of manpower.

In selected or traditional databases on-premise, the backup and maintenance are very difficult. If you are maintaining a complete platform, like a Linux platform, you will need to apply some regular DB patches, so things are very difficult here. But in AWS RDS, there are many databases available for which the maintenance will be taken care of by the AWS team and different scalable databases also available. For example, currently we are using other database subscriptions which are very useful for my applications. Earlier we had Oracle Streams but we migrated to Aurora.

The process is now simplified because there won't be maintenance. Usually we can take a snapshot of the number I need. We can automate the backup snapshots and we can restore it very quickly. We get many benefits from the application. For example, day to day, there are developers trying to run SQL scripts which will cause problems in the database. So instead of troubleshooting, I can simply roll back to the existing set so that they can work easily. The support that I get for my project and the deadline to release one new feature will usually take three to four months on on-premise. Now, since I have migrated to AWS, I can finish it in one or two months.

Saving the data that is in use is easy. We don't have any complexity like with MySQL. The database connections can be a little tricky in MySQL, it is easier with AWS Database Migration and the consistent view it provides.

We can easily access AWS Database Migration Service through not only AWS, but pgAdmin.

It's pretty useful when we need to migrate something big from a different type of database that AWS Data Migration Services supports. But it's more convenient to use Glue if we're dealing with a regular data load, like migrating a table.

The solution's most valuable feature is its warning of the costs of the migration.

As the solution is on the cloud, we don't have to worry about the maintenance of software.

The administrative aspects of the solution are very good. When we need to, we can increase our speed.
