VMware Carbon Black Endpoint Initial Setup

Deployment takes too much time because it has a lot of options. The implementation was not an easy process. I wish the implementation was easier. But it has a positive effect in the end. The complexity pays for itself ultimately. You do not spend time on the complexity and then get nothing as a result. So the complexity is something that is necessary.

We were new to this product. If the deployment took, say, two weeks, it took us a very long time, maybe a couple of months, until we knew this product was solid. The education services given by the partner are not enough. It was a completely new product for us, so we needed a lot of education. While the implementation took two weeks, it really took two months to go through all the options.

The initial setup has been straightforward. I think their user interfaces in mature and understandable, they did a good job in it. I would not say any end-point solution is simple, but I think it is more intuitive than many of them.

The installation part of the solution has no issues. In VMware, there is a custom package, so the solution is pushed to the ACM portal and software center, after which a person can go through the URL by Edge or Chrome or directly from the software center to install the product without any issues. The solution can be deployed in around 15 minutes.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

My team, consisting of eight members, is involved in the deployment of the solution. My team also manages scenarios where there are some compatibility issues in the solution. The maintenance part of the solution is not hard. The maintenance part of the solution can be taken care of based on the knowledge of the person involved in the maintenance process, which becomes an easy task if a person learns about the UI and other details of the solution. When working with my company's customers and users, my team provides support in the form of troubleshooting for the issues they face.

The initial setup is a straightforward process. I would rate it a seven out of ten because there should be some customized policy. Moreover, we need a tool for pre-checks, for example, to check Windows operating system compatibility and internet connectivity to connect to the backend. Carbon Black CB Defenses should provide a pre-checklist for successful sensor installation. We are spending a lot of time finding out the exact cause of issues, whether it's a personal issue, an external issue, or something related. It would be helpful if they could provide tools to analyze those issues. They should give us the details, like, these are the things that are recommended to be checked before installing the console.

If you're not used to Carbon Black, it can be challenging because these are not regular rules, like the way you would deploy under a normal antivirus. There are a lot of different functionalities that you could do that are not available under normal antivirus things, such as allowing a script or an application to run based on hash, or white listing if an application is signed by a specific code sign or certificate. It can be very challenging.

When we did it years ago, we went from McAfee and Kaspersky to Carbon Black. At that time, there were 2,000 or so nodes. Deployment took less than a month. That was due to us doing various types of scripting for a massive rollout and automatic installation of the tool and the automatic uninstall of the older tools.

It was not easy and we faced challenges, but it was okay. We're also dealing with an issue involving multiple unsupported OS's because we have so many Linux products in our infrastructure. I would rate the initial setup as a three out of five, with one being difficult and five being easy.

I was part of the initial set up. We were doing a comparison with FireEye HX and other tools, as far as CrowdStrike ,Avira and Carbon Black. We chose Carbon Black, and I was part of the initial setup. And since we don't have an in-house setup, we have a cloud-based console, we don't have a dedicated server set up. It's much easier to implement with a cloud-base. So the resource requirement is much lesser in terms of the hardware is concerned.

I think it took somewhere around four to six weeks of time. We had the implementation done and then we were into the testing phase by doing UT testing and stuff like that, internally with a closed group. And then we moved on to selected groups and users who might be important in terms of revenue generation, and stuff internally, so we did that. And then we moved on to the global deployment. I think, over a period of time, I would say the initial implementation was done with a maximum of four to six weeks. And then, I think within six months of time, we actually had the complete deployment done.

It was pretty straightforward. The console was easy to understand because we have had complex consoles with EPO. This was a pretty straightforward console. And the user guide basically gave us the information about what we can do and what is available. Though it can still be more extravagant in terms of describing itself. But, it just gives you the right information in a short and sweet fashion.

It was pretty straightforward. It took some time to roll out. We wanted to eventually get to a point where we are now, which was to totally block everything we don't know about. But that didn't come out of the box. You had to let things run for a while.

It did a good job of reporting things, but not blocking so we could go through there and say, "Okay, these are legitimate files. Or these files were signed with these certificates from these vendors that we can trust," for example. We spent six or eight months going through everything before we actually turned it into full blocking mode. As far as initial rollout, it was fairly simple, and it's been fairly easy to upgrade the agents.

We ran into some issues with some of the MSIs and things or some systems when we tried to update some things and it broke. I'd probably rate the setup a four out of five.

We do deployment slowly and in phases. We could have deployed it pretty fast, actually. But it took us about three months to deploy everything because we wanted to make sure we had test groups of machines that we put into each department or each part of the organization, because they do different things. We didn't want to inadvertently start breaking certain things. So, we took our time pulling it out. But I think, essentially, it could have been deployed in probably a few weeks at the most.

We have a team of about five people who take care of maintenance.

The setup really depends on a few crucial elements. It depends on where we are, what region, what country we're in, and what PIA rules they have in place. For the most part, it is a fairly straightforward setup. I will say in the initial setup, Carbon Black was very responsive. They were really good at providing the assistance and the support we needed to get it set up, but it was not an extremely hard task.

The initial setup is a bit of a mix. It is simple in the sense the setup was quite straightforward, however, when it comes to configuring for other supports, like emails, notifications, Syslog, et cetera, this identity provider's power integration, which we did for our SML 2.0, is powered based, rather than supported directly through the GUI. That was not so user-friendly, or more complex in terms of configuration.

On a scale from one to five in terms of ease of setup, it'll be about three. It probably takes about half a day just to complete the configuration setup.

The maintenance so far has been quite fairly straightforward. We don't really have any issues with the maintenance. Obviously, I didn't want the downside of the product side, maybe one of the cons is that it doesn't really support HA high availability setup configuration.

The deployment process is straightforward.

We're still deploying it slowly, little by little because we use a lot of critical applications and if Carbon Black interferes with the application, it will stop working. It needs to be tested thoroughly. It's a long process.

All of its applications need to be tested thoroughly and then tested in a testing environment. Then we deploy and monitor, make changes, and stuff like that. As far as general users, laptops, and stuff, that's pretty straightforward. It's just part of the image. I have to write that script to uninstall McAfee, the whole migration. It's pretty straightforward. It wasn't complex as far as the installation or deployment.

Symantec is a more traditional platform where you set it up and install it. If you're using a cloud platform, then you obtain access to the system. You need to define all the exceptions that you know need to be implemented based on the applications that you are running. Then, you deploy your endpoints, which should pull down the policies with the approved exceptions. Then, you work through any issues.

With Carbon Black, you have to go through a longer period of monitoring what exists in the environments. We deploy the agents in a monitoring type only mode, which can exist alongside another antivirus product, like Symantec.

You could technically have Symantec installed in normal mode, then Carbon Black in monitoring mode right next to it. We let that run for a period of time to gather information about what is running in the environment actively to help identify the types of things that we'll have to build policies around. The policies can be pretty in-depth, so it can take quite a long time to actually build them, if you want to be extremely careful about not creating any false negatives in the environment.

It can take quite a bit longer to implement Carbon Black properly. It takes one to two days to implement Symantec. Though, I don't know for certain, because we don't implement it. For Carbon Black, we typically look at three to eight days of active work over a period of a couple of months to get it implemented, working properly, and tuned up correctly.

The initial setup of VMware Carbon Black Endpoint was easy.

The solution is deployed on a public cloud.

The deployment phase took about a month to get deployed to all the endpoints using the agent, but the most difficult part was tuning the policy, which took the most time based on the alarm policy and alert policy. I feel the aforementioned phases of deployment are a regular process.

I do not want to discuss the actual number of people involved in the deployment process, but I can say that the deployment was not done for a small company.

The initial setup was straightforward. We use it for the environment server, clients like end users, and competitors. We use some automation tools like SCCM for Windows, Linksys, and some other automation tools, and we use a lot of them to deploy. So, it depends since it is a circle and because every day, there is a new server that joins the environment. And when your server line client enters the server environment, they automatically install blockings.

But the environment contains over twenty thousand clients. It may take three or three months, depending on whether the employee works in their home. They can only join the network once they log in to VPN. So as a result of that, sometimes deployment time takes too much time. We have very big environments, but a lot of the domain is managed by some administration. Less than ten people were required for the deployment.

It's sensor-based, so you have to install the machine associated with your application. You will have the configuration file and the agent installation file. You'll have to run the configuration file, and then you'll be onboarded to Carbon Black. It's easy.

While the rollout is pretty easy, you have to kind of tune it a little bit for applications as it discovers them.

To deploy a sensor, it takes just a couple of minutes or so. Then, to kind of tune the policy itself, you are probably looking at a couple of weeks.
