Good functionality and has the possibility to have one manager for other firewalls but stability needs to improve

What is our primary use case?

I work directly with clients, such as financial companies like banks, for example. Most of the time they want they're product to be on their premises, only in their local area.

Pros and Cons

  • "In general, the features are all great. However, if I need to take hardware for ASA, because they need to upgrade to Firepower, we want to create rules. For that, most of the time we go to the command line. Right now Firepower is working really hard on the grid. You can apply all those rules to the grid. Even if you want to monitor the logs, for example, the activity will tell you which particular user has been blocked because of that rule. Firepower's monitoring interface is very good, because you can see each and every piece. ASA also had it, but there you needed to type the command and be under the server to see all that stuff. In Firepower you have the possibility to go directly to the firewall. The way the monitoring is displayed is also very nice. The feature I appreciate most in Firepower is actually the grid. The grid has worked very well."
  • "To be frank, the product is not really stable, although they're working on that. Whenever I go to the technical community with an issue, they will usually say that it is not there yet, but the technical team are working on it. The issues are not insolvable. I think they should just keep working on the product to make sure that the product can become very stable. The technical support is great. I appreciate that. We have a lot of communities supporting Firepower now, so you can find help for whatever issue you have."

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution and give it a rating of seven out of ten. That is mainly because of the expense. I don't know the exact amount, but most of the time when I go to a company with a proposition, they will say, "This thing that you are selling is good, but it's expensive. Why don't you propose something like FortiGate, Check Point, or Palo Alto?" Cisco devices are expensive compared to other devices. If not for that, I would rate it as nine out of ten. Because of the expense, I prefer to give it seven. Most of the time when I lose an offer from this product, it's only because of…

Auto-scaling, powerful software fingerprint identification, and good technical support

What is our primary use case?

The NGIPS handles all of the IPS functionality for our security.

Pros and Cons

  • "I think their fingerprints are good in terms of how they whitelist and blacklist."
  • "The only thing I think they may need to improve on a little bit is identifying software more correctly when you do network discovery."

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing Cisco NGIPS is to read and understand all of the documentation before you start. Whatever it is that you might need help with, reach out to Cisco support and let them help you. The documentation is available and it is very understandable so you may not need their help. I would say that if you take your time to read it then you shouldn't have any problems in deploying. I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

A mature product with good integration capabilities, however, it needs to be more affordable

Pros and Cons

  • "Cisco has always been a premium product. There's a lot of other entry-level solutions. This is more robust."
  • "The company needs to make its solution more affordable to make it more accessible to larger markets. Otherwise, it's seen as an enterprise-level solution that small or medium-sized organizations can't afford and therefore they won't even look at it."

What other advice do I have?

We use a few different Cisco solutions. We're a Cisco partner. We have a business relationship with the company. We're dealing with the latest version of this particular solution. I'd rate the solution seven out of ten. The value for money it should be there. Which means good features, good functioning things are there, but they need to make it more affordable for big market. If they were able to price the solution to make it more affordable for more clients that may not be enterprise-level, they've have a bigger footprint.

Good VPN and filtering features, 100% stable, but needs a better graphical user interface and more training

What is our primary use case?

We basically use this solution to filter traffic so that the network can be secured and no one can hack the network. We are using WatchGuard as a gateway security product. It is installed on the gateway to filter the traffic for our network, stop access to malicious websites, and protect our interwork network from any kind of hack attempt from outside. We are also using the VPN feature. The traffic is encrypted via a VPN, and no one can hack it. We are using the latest version of this solution.

Pros and Cons

  • "The VPN and the filtering features are the most valuable. Its VPN is very strong, and its services are very nice. The main problem in India is the service. There are not enough Check Point and Fortinet Firewall services, but for this product, the service is very good."
  • "Its graphical user interface could be improved because not everybody is technical. There is a lack of knowledge, and they can give some training for this solution."

What other advice do I have?

I would 100% recommend this solution to others. We plan to keep using this solution in the future. I would rate WatchGuard Intrusion Prevention Service a seven out of ten.
