Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Initial Setup

Greg Dend - PeerSpot reviewer
Information security manager at MTN

The setup is very different from other solutions. It just needs to be connected, and the user needs to put in the username, password and then the OTP (One-Time Password).

We have a team of five experienced managers and engineers who maintain the solution.

The initial setup is fairly straightforward. It's pretty easy.

When you are set up and working, there is not much to maintain.

The only thing to note is that if you set up that policy to scan your PC, you need to stay up to date on what your desktop team is doing.

For example, you must be aware of your Windows version, or your antivirus, and address the policy accordingly.

The solution is easy to deploy once you spend a few hours planning and conducting security assessments to ensure they align with customer requirements. Deployment when customers already have Cisco Security hardware or software in place takes two or three hours with one hour of that time dedicated to installation and testing.

I'm not handling the setup process. In this organization I don't have access to that. I have very limited knowledge in that area. I use it simply for connecting to the client network.

The initial setup was straightforward and took me about ten minutes to deploy the solution. The deployment process for Cisco AnyConnect is straightforward. I downloaded it from the organization's homepage, following the provided version and manuals. Configuration files and information are usually sent through a separate channel for security. Once downloaded, I set it up, and it has been running on my PC since, without any hassle. No team is needed for deployment and maintenance. The instructions are clear, and it is not a large or complex task.

I would rate the setup process a six out of ten. It was manual work, and though the configuration was easy, we still needed to understand it. But overall, It was a fair experience.

The product's setup phase depends on the kind of use cases for which a person wants to use it. In general, the setup process is not very critical, but you need to create a VPN rule so that you know who can access the tool and what the limitations are, after which the potential users of the product can get access to it.

For the product's deployment phase, users need to be created for a steady account, and then ensure that the VPN gets created, after which the company needs to give certain permissions to the users, following which we need to share with them the URLs and everything.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

I need two to four staff members in my company to handle the deployment and maintenance phases.

It's a moderately complex installation and configuration process, not overly complicated.

The time depends on the specific features and stages involved, like designing, implementing, and configuring.

For a full deployment with access for 100 users, it might take around a week. A basic configuration and installation could be done within two days.

In terms of setting up the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, there's no need to install it in my case because it's pre-installed centrally as part of the package my company has. My team didn't waste any time on the installation because you can use it right out of the box.

In my company, the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client was pre-installed and pre-configured.

It is simple to set up the product. It's not overly complex or difficult for me.

In this particular organization, it came pre-installed. However, I had installed it. That was at another company. I just got the application and installed it on my local server, and used the documentation provided to handle the process.

It took about 15 to 20 minutes to deploy the product. It's very fast.

Complicated scenarios are difficult to deploy. On a scale from one to ten, with one being the most difficult, I'd give a rating of between two and three for the initial setup.

We used Microsoft SCCM to deploy the agent, which was already deployed at the customer's organization. We had two to three team members who worked on the deployment, and the deployment took three months.

We provide 24/7 maintenance of the solution to our customers depending on the SLAs.

The initial implementation process is simple.

The size of the deployment depends on the amount of personnel you'll need, however, in our experience, we've only ever needed one or two people to deploy it.

After we get an order from the customer, they have some admin work to be done, which takes probably up to two weeks or three weeks. After three weeks, we have the project manager and the engineer assigned to the opportunity. Then, it might take up to ten days.

Maintenance is minimal. We may only need one or two people to handle maintenance. We don't have many issues with the solution.

The initial setup was pretty simple. However, we did have onboarding support assist us with it. Our network administrator at the beginning of an install will always call Cisco support to get the expert on the phone. They provided us with white papers on how to do the setup allowing any setup moving forward is done correctly the first time. We did also purchase the premium support, for which there was no additional fee for the installation guideance.

The implementation is quite easy - if the person is aware of the right version. The only challenge that I have been facing with Cisco VPN is the version. If we are using an independent version, it's next to impossible. Therefore, we have to always ensure that we are using the right version of Cisco VPN, as there are multiple versions available on the internet and one can download anything.

Once you are using the right version, it hardly takes more than five minutes to set everything up.
