The partner that we utilized was Heartland Business Solutions, in Wisconsin.
Our experience with them, overall, has been pretty good. When it comes to the Cisco world, our organization's mix of experience comes in. There are items that we can do outside of the partner because we have some very talented individuals that work for us, some Cisco Certified individuals.
One issue is that, in their business, Heartland is always trying to upsell. They are an intermediary, they play that middle guy all the time, but there are items that we're capable of doing that they push. They don't really allow us to just run with it because they want to get the engineer time and the tech time. They want to make revenue off of some items that we're capable of doing. That would be one issue with them.
Another item that is frustrating has to do with the way they manage our Cisco licenses and Smart Nets for us. I'll give an example. We have Cisco firewalls across our entire network. Every year we have to buy the subscriptions for malware, and URL filtering, etc., to get full utilization out of them. All of our firewalls are subscribed to the max when it comes to IPS, IDS, and file inspection. To get the licenses, they have to know how many firewalls etc. we have. We have an issue where one of our firewalls went down — it's in an HA so we're still up and functional — but it's still in a down state and we're working through it right now. We contacted them because all of a sudden we found out, hey, we don't have Smart Net. We pay them to manage our Smart Net contracts because it can be quite a hassle.
The question is, how can we not have Smart Net on a product that we know that we own. To get the subscription they know that we have X number of firewalls. When they renewed Smart Net they should know that there are that X number of firewalls in there, but there weren't. We run into a lot of that. We buy subscriptions for this, or there are yearly costs associated with that, but then when we match it up to Smart Net, we find out we don't have Smart Net on it or vice-versa. They have the numbers for subscriptions so they should be able to take those numbers and make sure that the Smart Net numbers match up with them. Or, they have the numbers for Smart Net and should be able to make sure we have the proper subscriptions lined up with it as well. That's been a frustrating point for us.
Other than those couple items, we had really good luck with them and they've been really good to us.

We did not actually use any external authority as far as setting up, maintenance, and configuration. It all comes directly from Cisco because of our partnership with Cisco, we have had a fantastic cast of system engineers and techs when needed. We haven't had to go out of our partnership with Cisco to actually implement these, to upgrade, or update.

I am working for a Cisco Professional Services Partner. We have only one guy deploying the devices. We don't require a big team to deploy it. In terms of configuration, it takes more people based on each person's skills because you have multiple areas: firewalls, IPS, knots, and routing. So, it depends on which skills will be required the most.
For maintenance on an average small to medium customer, it takes one to two people. When it is a big customer with multiple sites, you should have a small team of four to five people. This is because it is mostly not about creating the rules, but more about checking and analyzing the logs coming through Cisco Firepower Manager Center.

We normally always try to pre-stage, spinning up virtual FMC and VMware, then configure as much as possible before adding an appliance in. It can be a bit more challenging if you have a lot of FTDs at different sites because you need to be aware that you may be managing a device on an internal IP address while you are pre-staging, but that address may change when you deploy the solution. You just have to think that through, in terms of how Firepower Management Center will keep its connectivity to the device once you deploy it. So, if Firepower Management Center and appliances are all on the same local area network, then it is straightforward. However, it is when you have multiple appliances at different sites that it can be a bit more tricky to make sure that the connectivity is maintained when you deploy. I think some more guidance around this would be good. We have a process that works for us, but it took a bit of figuring out with Cisco TAC to make sure we were not missing anything. If they could maybe document it a bit better, that would be good.
Normally, someone like myself could set everything up, so you wouldn't need a big team. However, if you are doing integrations with something like Active Directory, then you need the person who administers that system to be involved. Likewise, if you are doing site-to-site VPN tunnels with third-parties, then you probably need someone from that third-party organization involved. Most of the configurations can be done by one person. You do need to let the Firepower discovery run for around two weeks before you then run the recommendations around which IPS rules to apply, but it would be possible to just select one of the base policies and leave it at that.
You could choose to run the network discovery, which you should do anyway because there are added benefits, for two weeks then choose the Firepower recommendations. However, if you didn't have time to do that, or that wasn't an option for some reason, you could just choose one of the base IPS policies, like Security over Connectivity or Balance, and that would work out-of-the-box.

We have vendor support. They are a partner of Cisco. When we buy the hardware devices, the vendor has the responsibility to do the implementation and configurations. We do coordinate with them in terms of providing the space and network details such as IP addresses, network type, subnets, etc. We also provide logical diagrams. We monitor the configuration, and after the configuration is done, we check how the network is working and performing.
We have an IT department that includes an applications group, a hardware group, and a security group. There are also Network Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 teams. The Level 1 team only takes care of the network side. The Level 2 and Level 3 teams do almost similar work, but the Level 3 team is a bit at a higher level in IT security. The Level 2 and Level 3 teams take care of firewalls-level and security-level configuration, policy upgrade, etc. They manage all network devices. Overall, we have around 20 members in our department.
For the maintenance of Firepower, two guys are there. A Level 2 engineer takes care of policy creation and deployment for new networks. A Level 3 engineer takes care of a new firewall, upgrades, and network design and architecture.

The name of the local partner we use here in Brazil is InfraTI.
For the first deployment we had to understand how to do it because of the constraints. We have the router and we have the next-gen firewalls running inside the router. Until we decided how to deploy, it took a little while. But now we have the knowledge to do that more easily. They are able to deploy it satisfactorily. We are happy with them.
For deployment and maintenance of the solution, it requires two people and our partner. On our side there is an engineer to discuss the details, and then there is the person who does the deployment itself.

The time it takes to implement depends on the policy of the customer. Practically speaking, it takes around three to four hours to deploy, but it can depend because the Firepower solutions have two parts. One part is the hardware, it is an actual firewall and actual device but the monitoring system and the control system is a software called FMC. Most of the customers deploy it over VMware. The time of deployment really depends on your resources, but on average will take three to four hours.
At least two to three people with professional knowledge, around three years of experience, are needed for the deployment and maintenance, not only for Firepower but in every security solution. The device is doing something, but the most important part is analyzing it. The device can give you logs, but the engineer should analyze the log and do something.
Deployment without inspection can require only one person but if you want to analyze the IPS, at least two people will be needed.

In my scenario, because I had to learn the entire technology over there and then apply it, it took me around two weeks time to do it. Then the integration, improvisation, and stuff that normally happens took some extra time. You can safely say around two to four weeks period is what it normally takes for deployment. This is based on how the company evaluates the product. It depends on how much you know at that point.
Usually, for the deployment, the company works with Cisco, so they only use Cisco products. I am a DIY person, I did the deployment myself.
More than one external team (Cisco partners) has been involved over time.

I did not handle the implementation by myself. Rather, it's done by another team including the original support from Singapore and with license support from headquarters in Japan.
However, our team does handle the implementation in-house, and we can handle the setup for clients as well.

Cyber Security Consultant at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
We handle the implementation for our customers.
I am a sales engineer, we are mainly in charge of selling the product. In terms of support, we have a department that covers that aspect. Sometimes after implementation, we also provide maintenance support services towards the whole project and sell it as a whole bundle. As a distributor, we also sell our products, our equipment, and devices. So the support team covers that aspect.
