Straightforward to upgrade, simple to configure, and good online community support

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution as a switch for networks.

What is most valuable?

Cisco Catalyst Switches are easy to use, simple to configure, and straightforward to upgrade. Additionally, CDN has been very helpful for separation.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by adding a user-friendly GUI. We use third-party applications for log monitoring that are expensive and if Cisco could provide log monitoring as part of this solution it would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for approximately six years.

Highly scalable and easy to manage

What is our primary use case?

We are using all the three hierarchal models of Cisco Catalyst: 2960, 4500, and 6800. It is perfect for an enterprise setup where you have multiple buildings and you want to aggregate in a single building.

What needs improvement?

I think one switch should go beyond the 10 gig connectivity to 40 gigs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Cisco Catalyst switches for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cisco Catalyst switches are resilient.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We can have multiple Cisco switches, like seven or eight, on a stack for 300 users. So it is highly scalable and easy to manage. There are 15,000 users on our campus total.

How was the initial setup?

Installing Catalyst Switches is straightforward, just like with any other Cisco device. For the Alto switch, it hardly takes 20 or 30 minutes. I believe we used a configurator. All in, it takes seven to eight people to deploy because we have a large number of switches. And on the operations team, we have seven to eight people managing them.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Cisco Catalyst switches nine out of 10. I would definitely recommend them to others.

Good for computation and backup; lacks some features and not user-friendly

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution is good for computation and backup."
  • "We need to rely on other devices to provide management features."

What is our primary use case?

Our company is in the financial sector and we are customers of Cisco.

What is most valuable?

The solution is good for computation and backup.

What needs improvement?

We need to rely on other devices to provide management features. Other solutions provide more features and Catalyst Switches is not user-friendly. Even the configuration is difficult for our new engineers. Cisco has some weaknesses.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for 13 years.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good, but anything support-related is based on payment. Without paying you won't see any service from Cisco. The same goes for training which requires payment. Other solutions provide training without payment but not Cisco.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The technical support license is very difficult because you can only get support if you've purchased the hardware. After you own the devices you still have to pay for support and pay for the license. Everything is an added cost.

What other advice do I have?

There are alternative solutions now penetrating the market and because of difficulties with configuration in this product, there are now more appealing options.

I rate the solution seven out of 10.
