Cisco Enterprise Routers Other Advice

Hafiz Umar Farooq - PeerSpot reviewer
Founder & CEO at ITGAT

I would rate this solution as nine out of ten. I'm only deducting a point because of the licensing cost. Scalability is very costly. Cisco is going to shift to smart licensing, which means you get the license for a specific period of time, and then you need to incur some cost to renew that license.

I highly recommend Cisco. It's highly stable and highly scalable, which is the reason why they're unable to fulfill orders globally.

Before I would recommend Cisco to someone, I would review the project and business needs. Why do they want to use the Cisco Enterprise router or Cisco equipment? What is the business nature? What are the requirements? What is the budget? These things need to be discussed before suggesting any solution. I am a solution provider, so it's the core business of my company to set up IT infrastructures for the other companies.

I always intend to know what kind of business someone is running, what are their prospects, what are the expectations from the infrastructure, and what is the total budget they want to incur on the infrastructure. For a businessman, IT is just an overload. There's a burden on the budget. If you have a garment business and someone suggests that you buy a $4,000 router, you will say, "Why?"

First of all, analyze your requirement, business, and network, and then I can suggest the best possible solution. It could be Cisco or another third party because if you say, "I have only $1,000 for this IT infrastructure," you will need to buy switches, the router, and everything else for $1,000. You can't even get a small enterprise router in the $1,000 range from Cisco.

I’m an end-user.

We are using Cisco 800 switches, Cisco 9300 switches, and Cisco 4400 series routers.

These are enterprise routers on-premises.

Using Cisco is the way to go. The peace of mind you get from having a solution that's reliable is invaluable. You are buying reliability, and around it is the value for your money. As a reliable solution, that's what you want, so that you focus on innovation. You configure it, forget it, and focus on other business activities.

I’d rate the solution ten out of ten.

I recommend Cisco Routers because of its stability, support, and availability. Cisco gives premium support, and they offer a solid product. Availability is a challenge right now for everyone because of the worldwide silicon shortage. So, my advice is to get one year ahead.

I would rate Cisco Enterprise Routers a nine out of ten.

My advice for the people who want Cisco routers is that I think they have to learn how to use them because there are a lot of features that they can use in the solution. But if they don't know how to use it, then they shouldn't buy it. They have to learn everything about the router so that they can use the very good features of the router. So, they need to get knowledge about the router and its features. Once you know how to use it, it's satisfying.

To understand the router and its features, I usually rely on Google, Cisco's website, and occasionally other websites. I find the documentation on the Cisco website to be great since they know how to explain the features well since the routers are their products. I rate this solution a ten out of ten, at times a nine out of ten, but not lower than that.

It is important for smaller companies to focus on understanding how deployments are done. The learning should be done from the perspective of deployment operations because whether you are an enterprise or a service provider you are buying these routers and offering a service to the internal or external customers as a service provider. You need to understand how these platforms and overall solutions help you to build a network faster and which part of it reduces the cost. Many of the smaller companies do not understand the operational expenses well enough, they will end up doing all kinds of Ad Hoc configurations with half the knowledge, and they will run into problems and it will be expensive.

Based on my experience with other routers, Cisco has proven to be reliable. And from the routing aspect of things, it is really the product of choice for most of my customers. Whenever they want to implement any networking, most of them will request Cisco products.

I rate Cisco Enterprise Routers a nine out of ten.

Comparing the 3900 to the 3800 routers, the class of routers has improved over the 3800. Most of the modules are gigabit ports and you can receive 10 gig ports with them, compared to the older version where it's a 100 megabit port.

Based on how the industry is going, where most connections are way over 100 megabits. If you're receiving an internet connection from a business customer, it's going to be more than 100 megabits, and sometimes 250 megs, or even 500 megabits. To have a router that is 100 megabits defeats the purpose of having a faster internet connection. The 3900 Series really solved that problem, where there are gigabit ports. If you want to aggregate ports to receive, for example, 10 gigabits or more, you can always do that by putting in a module SSP port. It has improved a lot.

In terms of advice, I'd say users need to be clear about customer requirements to avoid overpaying for features they don't need. They should take care to select the proper router type and use the proper license. For deployment, they need a high level of understanding, for the implementation and configuration. I'd rate the solution at a five out of ten. While the hardware is good, it doesn't offer very easy scalability and lacks decent automation capabilities.

I'd recommend the solution to other users, however, it depends on customer requirements. If the customer requirement is a very large network and a lot of brands and there are various data centers, I would recommend they install a different device. There are devices coming - such as SD-WAN. There are Viptela and other devices such as vBond. I would recommend those types of devices and suggest that automation and DNA should be installed.

That said if a customer's requirements are not that broad, and they just need routing, or the requirement is just routing and IPC VPN, I would recommend this product.

In one or two years, once SD-WAN is more mature, we may switch from our traditional routers and protocols to be completely integrated with SD-WAN.

My advice for anybody who is implementing this solution is to consider the routing that is needed because it can change the way you set up and deploy. There are differences between MPLS, internet routing, and office connectivity. SD-WAN will also be something to look into.

IT Manager at a tech services company with 501-1,000 employees

My advice to others considering this solution would be not to do what we did. Don't go with the all-in-one solution. Buy a basic product that Cisco certifies is more than capable of routing the traffic that you expect on the network, then get a decent firewall behind the router to really take care of security, content filtering, ACL and all the rest that a firewall does. It could be a bit expensive, of course, because you're buying two products instead of one. But what you can get out of it is much more than we get now from this Cisco solution.

It's not by any chance that when ISPs all over the world deliver an internet access line, they don't give you the top of the line support equipment. They don't push you to buy Cisco because it is the best. They give you something really basic because it's not supposed to do anything else than routing traffic from and to the internet. They expect you to have a firewall behind that router to manage all the rest of what a firewall is supposed to handle. Those providers know exactly what they're doing.

What I have learned from my experience with this product is to do more to check for something else as alternatives and compare products without just accepting a reputation and advice from the vending company's experts. You might not need to buy something expensive to really accomplish what you need to do.
