Cisco Meraki Systems Manager (MDM+EMM) Initial Setup

JasonRogers - PeerSpot reviewer
Chief Technology Officer at Tasman Logistics Services

The initial setup of Cisco Meraki Systems Manager depends on the number of devices and different environments you are configuring. Typically, it can take anywhere from half an hour to a few hours to get everything up and running. So, overall, it is a process that may take a few hours, but it depends on your specific setup. Usually, just one or two people can handle the deployment of Cisco Meraki Systems Manager. If your setup is simple, one person is enough. For complex setups, you might consider extra help from engineers or architects to ensure stability, but this isn't needed for most deployments. Maintaining the solution is easy due to its simplicity. Replacing a device is straightforward; you just plug in a new one and connect it to the environment. Overall, it is very user-friendly and uncomplicated to maintain. We deployed it both on-premise and cloud.

We now have higher bandwidth compared to the previous situations. Certain features are introduced on cloud versions, so we decided to migrate to the cloud version. It is based on both private and public clouds, based on the business environment.

The initial setup is not that difficult. The tool provides ease of installation. The installation can be done within a day. We can deploy more than 100 access points across the enterprise network. Core switches might take approximately three to four days. It requires certain policies and restrictions to restrict access.

The initial setup of Meraki is simple, but I think Cisco can be difficult overall. Cisco needs a foolproof design where you cannot possibly make a mistake. If you make a mistake with this, you have a problem throughout the whole network. We have an internal team for deployment. We also have some programmers from another country, and we do collaborative work with them.

I would rate my experience with the initial setup a four out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy. It is more difficult.

It is mostly deployed on-premises. The deployment can take from a few hours to days.

Initial setup is straightforward.

The amount of time it takes to deploy the system really just depends on the needs of the end customer, and if it's a very specific configuration. I don't know exactly because I am not an IT engineer or a network engineer. I am a manager, and I have different people in my team to ensure these activities.

The number of people needed for maintenance just depends on the size of the project, the size of the site, and the customization. Every project is different.

We found it very simple to set up the solution. A company shouldn't have any issues with the process. You only need one or two technical people to handle the deployment. Not more than that.

The initial setup was pretty straightforward once the admin team decided on what they wanted to deploy, their group policies, and the profile. Deployment took around three months from start to finish.

The initial setup was very simple. It took maybe two weeks to deploy. 70% was deployed in the first week. It got delayed due to the fact that we had endpoints in other cities and stuff like that. It wasn’t overly difficult and did not take a long time to get up and running.

We only require two people to handle deployment and maintenance tasks.

This was a cloud implementation, however, I don't really have any details about the process. My understanding was that it was straightforward. Setting up the initial infrastructure took about one month.

There were only two or three people handling the deployment and maintenance.

The initial setup is very straightforward because they'll send you a license first, along with a username, and you get to create your password. You can go into the user dashboard before you ever get the Meraki devices sent to you and start to configure them. Everything can be configured within the dashboard itself. Once your system arrives and you're attached to the network, it will automatically report to the dashboard. The dashboard, in turn, will push out all the configurations to the devices. Everything can be pre-configured.

I had experience with Cisco devices previously so the initial setup was easy. Deployment is never complicated unless you complicate your design or implement other design management. If your planning is really good before implementation, the deployment will go well. I enjoyed using it and implementing it.

Deployment took a few hours, initially. However, the total time to fully understand it and get into the weeds with the way it works will take a lot longer since there's so much to it. It took us a few months of testing it out here and there to get comfortable to roll it out.  Bear in mind, we didn't have a deadline, and this was being done as a side project.

The most significant benefit is that the deployment is quick and painless. You don't need a specialized IT department to implement and scale the network. It's easy to maintain, too. It only requires one or two network administrators.
