Cisco NGIPS Scalability
NGIPS is scalable. It has well-defined stacks for how much traffic it can handle. You can fully inspect traffic or use SSL decryption.
View full review »It's not scalable on a single device. If you need to scale up, you have to buy another one.
For any of these devices, this is the irritating part. A customer comes to me and says, "I need a gig of internet access at a location." If I see a Firepower that handles up to a gig, I'm not buying it because I can't scale. If the customer comes back to me six months later and says, "We're packing that gig, and I need two gigs," then he's going to get angry at me for undersizing his firewall, so I need to go to a four gig model.

It is a scalable solution. We have over 100 clients.
View full review »It's scalable. You can add more to it as traffic requires, one cluster can do HA, so it's pretty scalable. In fact, you can cluster up to six chassis on the 4100.
If it's host-based IPS, we can count a number of users and say we have 45,0000 users but for network-based IPS, where it's just picking traffic from different connections when you're trying to go to the internet or when you're trying to come back to the internet it can support up to 10 million concurrent sessions. We have around 200,000 users but it can support 10 million concurrent sessions.
For maintenance, once you configure it, depending on what you call maintenance if it's software upgrade it doesn't take a lot to upgrade it. If it's active/standby you can upgrade the active. The standby becomes the active. Then when the active comes back on, you can upgrade the standby. So usually, at least you have an active/standby scenario, but if you have a cluster, you can take each out of production in codes. We start while others are in production.
If you're talking about maintenance in terms of log collections and shipping of the logs, it's also easy to deploy from that perspective.

Cisco NGIPS is not that easy to scale, in my opinion. However, it can be upgraded, depending on the design. When you propose a design to customers, you have to check their expansion capability in terms of various factors such as how much time and how much employees would have to be involved.
When it comes to the VM products, some of them might not be scalable unless you upgrade your product to the latest version, in which case you have to upgrade the versions one by one. For example, your current version might 5.1 and you are aiming to upgrade to version 10.1. In this case, you would have to upgrade each intermediate version until you reach 10.1.
The scalability of Cisco NGIPS is good.

This is a very scalable product. You can add multiple devices to the same policy and then push that out.
In the cloud space, scaling is done automatically based on the amount of traffic and the amount of bandwidth that's generated. It scales up and down, back and forth, as needed. For example, if there is not much traffic then it drops, whereas if there is a lot of traffic then it creates another FTD, and then it just shares the load with load balancing.
Everything is scaled properly both in the cloud and on-premises.

The scalability of Cisco NGIPS I am not too familiar with. The solution can do clustering and other operations. With the Orchestrator, I haven't worked with it yet but I hope that will help to make standard policies all run better. The most important part about scalability is how do you want to apply the same policy all around and across the different locations that you have. This is something that is not easy with any firewall unless you have a Secure Orchestrator. I don't see any issues with the scalability at this time.

Cisco NGIPS is scalable. However, the cost to the customer is always high, because it's still a hardware base. After the resource cycle of three or five years, you have to replace them. From that perspective, they are not the greatest solution out there.

I can't really speak to the scalability of the solution as I haven't used it for long enough.
Due to the fact that all the traffic passes through the firewalls, I would say 500 people or maybe more use the solution in our organization.

This solution is very easy to scale, depending on your organization's roadmap. I have had customers that are using it and scaling very fast, especially in the financial sector.
Being a clustered solution, you can have 500, 1,000, or 10,000 users. In fact, one of my customers has 20,000 users of NGIPS. I have another organization that has 1,200 users. The size of the solution is set based on the number of users.

When it comes to scalability, there is a limitation that is set by the hardware. If you're looking for higher throughput then you have to change boxes. The 2000 series is pretty small when it comes to bandwidth, so scalability is a concern.

The scalability on the solution is good overall. They have a central management console that can assist with the process. The only issue there is we feel like there's room for improvement on the administration side of things.
When it comes to a user installing the networks, all the users essentially traverse this firewall, but when it comes to the administrators of the product, we've got five administrators in networking, they pretty much use it on a daily basis.

Cisco NGIPS is scalable. The scalability is easy to do because if the Firepower threat defense works in the cluster mode, someone can scale up the system using two and three Firepower threat defenses at the same time in one system.

The solution is scalable. The management center, which controls the sensors, you can deploy it. You have two different virtual appliances, one is for managing up to 25 sensors and the bigger one is up to 300 sensors. The hardware list of the products ranges from, I think, 20 sensors and up to 500. Depending on your needs, you can scale it.
We have three administrators working on the solution and the whole organization is being protected by it.

This is suitable for organizations of all sizes; small, medium, and large-sized companies. For example, one of our clients has 600 users.
The ease of scaling depends on the number of times you scale, or to which extent. I can start by saying that scaling is easy but if you want to scale a hundredfold, then it's not going to be so easy. It's impossible.
