Cisco UCS B-Series Stability

PK
Data Center SME at Orange España

It is stable. It is much more stable than other hardware, like Dell and HP.

During the upgrade earlier, it was recommended to upgrade from south to northbound, upgrade Viccars, then blade, then IO, then SaaS, then click interconnects, Site A, and then come to Site B.

Now, we have an opportunity to automate the upgrade activity.

However, during our upgrades, when we did the entire infrastructure for FIA and FIB, during the reboot, FI failed very frequently.

FIA or FIB failed in approximately six to seven situations out of ten upgrades. The replacement of FI took much more time than if we had a business hour for four hours; it took approximately one or two days. Running the entire infrastructure on FIB or a single FI is really risky. That is a main area of improvement for Cisco UCS.

These are not stable servers because we have seen some cases where the servers have gone down when there were power fluctuations. Though the servers came with in-built batteries and in-built SPS, the blade servers were not accessible. They're designed to have one blade not dependent on another blade, but they still went down.

We went through the original teething pains of any new system. In particular, once we had our operational epiphany on what the potential was, we were limited by how fast features could be added to UCS Manger. With XML extensions, UCS Central (Manager of Managers) and UCS Director (Automation), we have enough on our plate.

The B-series is definitely stable, that is for sure. We rarely have any issues with the B-series. If there are any issues, we are covered by the four-hour response window and we can get parts replaced within a few hours if there's any faulty hardware. Stability is something I would say is over 90 percent better than most other products.

No issues with stability that we have not seen across other systems. In particular, due to Cisco networking dominance, the focus is on drivers that work with their products for all the competitors as well. Networking is typically the server area with the most work to be done – but this is the strength of Cisco.

Stability is a non-issue with Cisco UCS. We have not had any stability issues and to just mention, the Cisco UCS team employs strenuous testing mechanisms of all the UCS components. They provide this for all their firmware updates prior to public release. This is not to say that we've not had any issues, but the issues have been extremely small in comparison to the amount of systems we've deployed. Those issues were quickly identified, rectified and the systems were brought back online in a prompt manner with minimal customer business impact.
