CockroachDB Overview

CockroachDB is the #17 ranked solution in our list of top Relational Databases. It is most often compared to Citus Data: CockroachDB vs Citus Data

What is CockroachDB?

CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database built on a transactional and strongly-consistent key-value store. It scales horizontally; survives disk, machine, rack, and even datacenter failures with minimal latency disruption and no manual intervention; supports strongly-consistent ACID transactions; and provides a familiar SQL API for structuring, manipulating, and querying data.

CockroachDB is inspired by Google’s Spanner and F1 technologies, and it’s completely open source.

Simple to deploy and the support is good, but better features for high availability are needed

What is our primary use case?

We are currently evaluating this product to see if it can support distributed transactions with high availability. We are comparing it with Oracle, trying to see it can achieve the same thing.

Pros and Cons

  • "The initial setup and deployment are simple."
  • "We are looking for more features to support distributed high availability and geo-partitioning."

What other advice do I have?

At this point, I have not used this product enough to fully rate it on all of the features. In three or four months' time, I will have a better idea and understanding of it. I would rate this solution a six out of ten.
