What is most valuable?

From a tech perspective: * Utilizing deduplication * No replication * Getting the virtual environment backed up using Spectrum Protect Plus on all of the databases.

How has it helped my organization?

We currently use Tivoli Data Protection to back up our databases. Spectrum Protect is actually the application which backs up the file system data, then anytime you want to back up the databases you… more»

What needs improvement?

I would love to see something which allows us to do an auto restart of backup jobs. Right now, we have it where we have health checks, and if anything that missed or failed, we monitor those. However… more»

If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch?

We came from version 7.1.3. Based on some of the features which were offered in version 8, this was the focal point for us to say, "We need to upgrade if we want to take advantage of using container… more»

What other advice do I have?

Look at all the products in the industry, then base your decision on the size of your environment. A lot of times products say that have cool things, but at the end of the day, scalability and… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Veeam and Rubrik, but right now, we have the two best products. We have Commvault and Spectrum Protect. Each one of them are the best at different things and each have their weaknesses… more»

How has it helped my organization?

The most important part is that we know we have a backup of the whole virtual server. We can restore the whole server if we want, or just take some specific files. I like this duality of the product. That's how I put it on virtualized software.

What needs improvement?

The most important improvement would be for it to be updated to support new servers and we actually are in a situation that we are going to connect our Exchange service to a new one. They have to actually support new software as they are released and I think Veeam has promised to support new Windows… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is great. It's software related, and I know that might be a good thing because it's a cheap solution to buy and we have been looking for a program for backup and they fit the bill. The price of Veeam and its software related products enable you to have your own hardware. You can use your… more»

What other advice do I have?

You can actually use the infrastructure you already have so you don't have to buy new hardware to actually start using it. That's the most important part about this solution.

What is most valuable?

It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software, we have been using it for many years now. It's great.

How has it helped my organization?

For backup testing, previously it was taking a long time, because we needed to restore all the machines and systems. Now, testing the backup machines is very fast.

What needs improvement?

The new backup systems are using new mechanisms for the recovery phases; for example, VM, recovery and testing the backup before recovering it. These features are not available in Data Protector. What we need to see is fast recovery and… more»

What other advice do I have?

When selecting a vendor, first of all we need local support, here in our country, so that we don't need to open tickets with the vendor every time. A lot of times we need to open a ticket with local integrators. This is how we choose our… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Commvault and Veeam, these are the options on the shortlist. We haven't made a decision because there are new features being added by Micro Focus to Data Protector. We need to see if the new features and updates - maybe up until the end of… more»

What is most valuable?

We sell Avamar with Data Domain. Data Domain and Avamar work really well together and their compression ratios are very high compared to Veeam, Commvault, and all the other backup software on the market.

What needs improvement?

The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost-competitive in the entry-level range because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar. I think they could also move more towards cloud solutions. It already has some cloud tiering, but I think that could be more extensive. They should work with all cloud providers… more»

What other advice do I have?

You need to work with a specialist and EMC is a very huge company now. If, however, you go and talk to the right person who knows Avamar and data protection stuff, they can help you price the solution perfectly. That's not something that you should take for granted. There are so many tools available to do a proper sizing. I would rate Avamar as six out of ten. I would like to give it a seven or… more»

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the RBAC, the Role-Based Access Control. In our managed services, we can have different layers of security. Our customers can see their backups and some customers can do… more»

How has it helped my organization?

Because of the Role-Based Access Control, customers don't have to call our managed services representatives to do a restore, they can do it themselves. It's faster, easier, and more convenient.

What needs improvement?

The reporting could be better. It's good, but reporting of the jobs could be better.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is very good because if you already have NetApp controllers, then it's included. There's no added cost for SnapCenter.

If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch?

We used Virtual Storage Console from NetApp before and we used a third-party enterprise backup solution. We switched to SnapCenter because of ease of use and cost.

What other advice do I have?

Do a PoC to see if it's a viable product for you. In our company, we have about 20 users of SnapCenter. They are managed services backup administrators. Our management also uses the reporting. On the… more»
