We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product only requires two VMWare ESXi host servers versus three host servers for VMware's comparable solution.""For those basic uses, it's simple to set up and manage, and it seems to do a fine job.""This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN.""We are able to do maintenance by bringing down one node at a time, rather than having to schedule a complete shutdown.""This was a great implementation for a small to mid-size business.""Support keeps track of alerts of the system and verifies with us if we need help to fix any issues. They have great and quick technical support.""Given the high availability of the server cluster, we were able to reduce separate physical servers onto one hyper-converged cluster - this saved in OPEX and CAPEX costs immediately, along with licensing costs of the Windows Server licenses.""StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"The most valuable features are the full image backup, and the file or document sharing, allowing documents to be easily accessed from anywhere.""The most valuable feature is the backup capability.""The most valuable feature of Acronis Cyber Infrastructure is the multi-tenancy model, we can create customers and services for them."

More Acronis Cyber Infrastructure Pros →

"Customer service has been excellent. Any questions we have had have been answered quickly.""With proactive support, StarWind deploys and configures the solution for you.""We were able to set it up via the documentation and only needed their support a handful of times.""With StarWind's Proactive monitoring we can go about our day helping our customers and not have to worry about our cluster's health.""The initial setup seems to be very straightforward.""We opted for 24-hour monitoring and support, which has already paid for itself.""In our experience with StarWind, the support has been by far the most valuable feature.""The initial setup is straightforward once you know what you're doing."

Cons
"I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""It could have a dashboard so that you can check all servers' SAN health and performance.""When you will cease your contract with StarWind (for support) your product won't be updated and that is a big selling point, especially for us, as we have loads of products from StarWind.""Some of the documentation seems to be a bit older and refers to deprecated items.""The setup and documentation for the installation with the free version could definitely be improved.""The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks.""If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier.""They recommend RAID10 for HDD, which reduces the usable storage capacity."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"If they could make improvements with the virtual environment then it would be better.""Acronis Cyber Infrastructure is too populated. They have many features, but some features are still missing, it is not complete. They need to improve many features, such as email security and disaster recovery.""I would like to see real-time backup supported in the next release of this solution."

More Acronis Cyber Infrastructure Cons →

"The only area that the product could improve would be user training.""It would be nice if it were possible to do the ISCSI setup that you do on Windows directly in the management GUI of StarWind.""The web-managed interface (a separate VM) could be better.""We ran into some issues with going from Hyper-V 2012 R2 to Hyper-V 2019.""We were slightly disappointed with the hardware footprint. We were led to believe, and all the pre-sales tech information requirements pointed to the fact, that it was coming on Dell hardware. Then it came on bulk servers.""At the moment, the initial configuration is very technical and error-prone. That is the reason Starwind does it for you as a service, which is a great thing. But it would be nice if we could change or rearrange storage assignments ourselves.""The only critique I might have is that the support is overseas in Eastern Europe and, on occasion, there has been a language issue. But in general, they're as good as can be...""Not much can be improved, to be honest."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The pricing is on the high side and the subscription is renewed every year."
  • "We pay monthly for the use of Acronis Cyber Infrastructure. There are additional features that we use that have an extra fee."
  • More Acronis Cyber Infrastructure Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "A desired feature or service would be the ability to have a hardware subscription plan that ensures routine hardware updates in conjunction with hyper-converged software."
  • "Its cost was reasonable."
  • "This was all completed at an affordable price point for an SMB, which was also a key element for an NPO."
  • "When I researched they came the most cost-effective."
  • "The other solutions we were looking at were priced much higher than this and they didn't necessarily have full redundancy... Nutanix and VxRail were in the final running... but it came down to our price point."
  • "I honestly feel that there's no one else in the market doing what they're doing for the price point that they're doing it at. That's why I asked them about investing in their company. I think that the options they're providing and the software that they have is sort of revolutionary for the price point... The total cost was $24,400."
  • "The Nutanix piece was about $45,000, getting close to $50,000 with all the licensing involved, whereas the StarWind was less than half of that, after Microsoft licensing and such."
  • "We looked at Nutanix and found it did almost the same thing but for more money. In fact, StarWind was nearly one-third of the price; it cost us £36,000. That includes five years of monitoring... The Nutanix was near enough £110,000 for relatively the same amount of performance and storage."
