Pros
"It is easy to use and can monitor system synchronization and check Storage status. StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN) combines flash and disks of the cluster and forms a virtual shared storage “pool” accessible by all hosts. StarWind cuts down virtualization cost and complexity by eliminating the need for a physical shared storage (SAN). -StarWind offers the Enterprise-level high availability (HA), deployed and easily configured . we get technical support from star wind team when implementation software and after setup if we face any issue.""The management and monitoring have been very easy since the solution's dashboard is very simple and user-friendly.""StarWind Virtual SAN offers high availability and data resilience features to prevent data loss if hardware fails.""The StarWind products have enabled our organization to modernize stations where larger and more expensive equipment was not an option.""The user interface for this application is amazing.""StarWind vSAN has a lot of great features and is a perfect solution for mirroring internal disks and flash between servers.""The support team is available to solve any problem efficiently.""It has allowed us to save a lot of time and money by letting us create a vSAN within a Windows VM on the environment it controls."

"The most valuable features are the full image backup, and the file or document sharing, allowing documents to be easily accessed from anywhere.""The most valuable feature of Acronis Cyber Infrastructure is the multi-tenancy model, we can create customers and services for them.""The most valuable feature is the backup capability."

"This solution has a dashboard that you can log into and control if you need too while the VM is getting created.""Being able to deploy multiple applications with virtual servers is the most valuable for us. The capacity of the system is quite constant so it's got some of the good features.""The product’s most valuable features are performance and expandability.""The main advantage is that it's all in the box, with VMware vCenter Server product.""Its ease of use is most valuable. It is easy to configure, and there is a unified interface, which makes things slightly easier.""Adding new nodes and expanding vSAN forward is simple and non-disruptive for a lot of our customers.""As a function of our core business, it's a sought after tool that helps us provide analytical support across a wide spectrum of client needs. It's allowed us to test out in our connected restaurant - "TheWorks" - a fully-functional restaurant experience center that allows our clients to discover the value of our connected solutions firsthand. We deploy vSAN in this customer-like environment within a hyperconvergent infrastruction (HCI) to give our clients a better understanding and help optimize data and the end-users' experience.""One of the most valuable features of this solution is that it is stable."

Cons
"New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.""I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs.""A central management console may be nice to see all nodes.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""The most disappointing side of the application is the free edition. There used to be GUI attached. That has recently changed to only CLI management of the application.""Some configuration options still demand service restarting.""A better overall view of the different deployments could be beneficial, although this is difficult due to how flexible the solution is."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"I would like to see real-time backup supported in the next release of this solution.""Acronis Cyber Infrastructure is too populated. They have many features, but some features are still missing, it is not complete. They need to improve many features, such as email security and disaster recovery.""If they could make improvements with the virtual environment then it would be better."

More Acronis Cyber Infrastructure Cons →

"It needs to be vanilla. There shouldn't be any custom drivers, any custom anything. It should just be, "Hey, you know what? These drivers are going to work for this version, the next version, and the following version after that." That's the difficulty in this. It takes too much upkeep... The main issue is drivers. Every time we move to a new vSAN version, we're having problems finding the correct drivers for the vendor.""This solution is not great for large file shares/object/rich media repository.""We often run out of space but we have enough capacity for memory and CPU. It's difficult to find the balance between storage and memory CPU.""The stability needs to be improved.""Disaster recovery needs to be improved, when there is a crisis, there is a problem with what is the quickest way to get out of it.""This solution could be improved by having more than one controller for the environment. VMware depends on one controller for the whole environment, whereas Nutanix has one controller for each node. Because there is only one controller with VMware, if there was any drop, then the whole environment would stop working. In Nutanix, I have five nodes—there is one controller for each node and it depends on a virtual controller—so if the controller of any node is down, the whole environment will still work.""We are facing some problems with updates with the VMware vSAN. When we upgraded from version 6.5 to 7, we have been faced with many problems. They have been deploying many hotfixes for this version, and they need to continue to improve this version.""This solution would benefit from better collaboration with Cisco for driver updates."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The pricing is on the high side and the subscription is renewed every year."
  • "We pay monthly for the use of Acronis Cyber Infrastructure. There are additional features that we use that have an extra fee."
  • More Acronis Cyber Infrastructure Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The first 1-2 years of purchasing vSAN will be expensive. Thereafter, the longer you are running it, the more cost savings you will have."
  • "Its reasonable, compare with other storage vendors"
  • "Basically, vSAN is a license in addition to that of the classic VMware Vsphere, which is also mandatory."
  • "I would like to see this technology be made available to smaller businesses, who might benefit from high availability but struggle with the entry fee."
  • "Perhaps a bundle, like Essentials, would allow more businesses to make the leap to the product."
  • "We have increased our user productivity."
  • "What made us go with this solution was price point. When you can utilize existing storage infrastructure, and not have to continually purchase new SAN products out there that are going up in price as time goes by, then it's a wonderful thing."
  • "We did consider other hyperconverged solutions. It usually came down to price. vSan was the most cost effective thing."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the VMware vSAN solution.

PeerSpot user Yves S., CEO, Cloud Evangelist at Comdivision Consulting GmbH, says, “vSAN gives us a lot of advantages when we need to expand resources. We have an overall larger host infrastructure, and we split that up for specific customer test and use cases. In that specific scenario, we can easily add more hosts or reduce the number of hosts in the environment.”

A reviewer who works in Infrastructure Security explains, “The ease of use is great. The initial setup and upgrade process was pretty straightforward. And, technical support is great.”

Laurent N., Director at Softlogic, comments, "The feature that I have found most valuable is that it is easy to deploy. It is easy to create and delete virtual servers. It is easy to create the load balancing and the clustering."
