Q&A Highlights
Question: What are the differences between Palo Alto Networks Panorama and AlgoSec?
Answer: Hi Dear Anouar, I want to explain something to avoid misunderstanding. Palo Alto Networks (PAN) Panorama is the management dashboard for Palo Alto Firewalls; which is provided by PAN and comes with a license. However AlgoSec is used as a Firewall Analyzer tool to analyze firewall rules according to their severities, configuration mistakes, shadowing or redundant rules, etc. If you want a solution to analyze your firewalls and harden them; you can consider preferring a firewall analyzer solution. If you want to manage your firewall configurations, create rules, routes, etc., you can prefer to have PAN panorama; instead of managing the firewalls by connecting each of them separately.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is that the tool is capable of simplifying firewall management and configuration in an automated fashion.""AlgoSec Firewall Analyzer can detect misconfigurations and unused or permissive rules, as well as rules without logging. Through a single dashboard, I can see all the problematic rules from all the firewalls. It's very simple, with AlgoSec, to get an analysis of all the rules, and that helps with visibility.""I think finding the firewall's rules with the highest risk is valuable.""We can easily and quickly identify all of the rules on the firewall and avoid the individual review and analysis of each rule.""AlgoSec contributes more in the security space for our company, especially in automatically finding the high risk and medium risk rules instead of manually reviewing over a few thousand rules.""I found that for policy optimization it does a great job.""We were able to improve the security ratings of our firewalls.""Breaking down a rule to specify used objects within groups and protocols has proven invaluable for us because we are able to narrow exposure to potential threats, and more generally, areas in which we are exposed."

"The reporting is great.""The most valuable feature is the Threat Intelligence.""I would improve the management. I need to view charts and traffic statistics, but the management console doesn't share that information with me.""What I like most about this solution is that it allows me to push multiple policies on multiple followers at the same time.""Templates and the possibility to apply a configuration to many devices at the same time are the most valuable features. We are able to create templates, and we don't need to go to each firewall to make changes. We can make changes in Panorama, and it automatically applies those changes to all those firewalls on which we want to apply the changes. It provides centralized management.""You don't need an overly experienced workforce to handle Palo Alto. It's very easy to use.""The solution doesn't need a proxy for the Prisma Access Firewall.""Palo Alto technical support is excellent."

Cons
"Needs better technical support and quicker response times.""Automate the change documentation in MS Word format. Therefore, we can customize it, if needed.""Our experience with support has been inconsistent. Sometimes, support is fast and clean; other times, not so much. Occasionally, they have taken a while to respond or provided an inadequate workaround instead of a solution.""It would be nice if it was more variable when checking virtual domain baseline in the same way as Fortigate's firewalls do.""There could be certain improvements such as supporting secure email.""The process to replace a decommissioned device with a new device is not straightforward.""A simple tutorial about the initial configuration on Youtube could provide a lot of help.""I like the training available as it is very informative, but, I wish it was just available from YouTube and I could easily play it from my cell phone without additional logins."

More AlgoSec Cons →

"We found a vulnerability where when we have a low flow, like 2.7K, it is not getting fired by the threat prevention. That's something important to improve on. They should have a proxy or some solution to solve the issue. We also found some issues around decrypting the flow. When we have more flow than expected to decrypt, the performance goes down.""I am observing that whenever pushing our configurations sometimes the configuration will not push properly and then we have to go to the individual firewall and save it again.""It can take a few minutes to test to see if any changes are successful or not. This needs to be improved. A commit change should take a second, not a minute or more.""The current documentation is not detailed enough.""The dual WAN functionality is missing in this solution.""The ability to add scheduled jobs would be a significant improvement. Panorama has the ability to push out OS updates, but it would be nice to be able to schedule those updates so not to affect the site during normal business hours.""There is always room for improvement in anything.""The solution's utilization of network ports makes things as complex as possible."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing is okay and the licensing can be a little tricky with the initial setup."
  • "AlgoSec may be little pricier with its licenses, but it is probably better than any of other competitors."
  • "I personally feel that the cost is quite expensive. AlgoSec is charging for each function, e.g., Active change, Application ABF license, etc."
  • "It is worth spending the cost for visibility on security. Of course, security is not cheap."
  • "It has improved our performance in operations, projects, and security."
  • "It will reduce your operations costs with improved team performance."
  • "Use the entire suite for its best benefits."

  • More AlgoSec Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing is high compared to other vendors in the same space. Licensing is also fairly high for different functions to be added on."
  • "With the URL filtering, we probably went down from around four hours in response time to about five minutes."
  • "The licensing is not cheap. There are always hidden costs. You have support costs, or maybe you need to buy more optics on how the solution fits into the rest of your environment. It is possible some of the rest of your environment will need to change too."
  • "It has freed up staff time, which is where we are seeing ROI."
  • "Initially, Palo Alto looks expensive, but if you dig deeper then you will find that it is very comparable, or even cheaper than other solutions."
  • "You only pay for the license and there are no additional costs."
  • "We pay approximately $3,000 a year in order to use the product."
  • "The pricing model is reasonable for this class of solutions."
