We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Hadoop is designed to be scalable, so I don't think that it has limitations in regards to scalability.""Data ingestion: It has rapid speed, if Apache Accumulo is used.""Most valuable features are HDFS and Kafka: Ingestion of huge volumes and variety of unstructured/semi-structured data is feasible, and it helps us to quickly onboard a new Big Data analytics prospect.""It is a file system for data collection. There are nodes in this cluster that contain all the information, directories, and other files. The nodes are based on the MySQL database.""It's good for storing historical data and handling analytics on a huge amount of data.""Two valuable features are its scalability and parallel processing. There are jobs that cannot be done unless you have massively parallel processing.""What comes with the standard setup is what we mostly use, but Ambari is the most important.""Initially, with RDBMS alone, we had a lot of work and few servers running on-premise and on cloud for the PoC and incubation. With the use of Hadoop and ecosystem components and tools, and managing it in Amazon EC2, we have created a Big Data "lab" which helps us to centralize all our work and solutions into a single repository. This has cut down the time in terms of maintenance, development and, especially, data processing challenges."

"The solution's banking model, called FSLDM (Financial Services Logical Data Model), is sophisticated and good.""IntelliFlex is easy to scale - one of its best features is that you can upscale it to the size you want.""Intelliflex is very scalable. In fact, scalability has improved 100 times by Intelliflex, in my personal opinion.""It is very stable. It's 100% uptime. Speed and resilience are one of the greatest features of this product. In almost twenty years we've never had downtime, except for outages for patches and upgrades. We've never had a system failure in twenty years.""The product's scalability is great. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."

Cons
"I mentioned it definitely, and this is probably the only feature we can improve a little bit because the terminal and coding screen on Hadoop is a little outdated, and it looks like the old C++ bio screen. If the UI and UX can be improved slightly, I believe it will go a long way toward increasing adoption and effectiveness.""Based on our needs, we would like to see a tool for data visualization and enhanced Ambari for management, plus a pre-built IoT hub/model. These would reduce our efforts and the time needed to prove to a customer that this will help them.""The solution needs a better tutorial. There are only documents available currently. There's a lot of YouTube videos available. However, in terms of learning, we didn't have great success trying to learn that way. There needs to be better self-paced learning.""The solution is very expensive.""It would be helpful to have more information on how to best apply this solution to smaller organizations, with less data, and grow the data lake.""The price could be better. I think we would use it more, but the company didn't want to pay for it. Hortonworks doesn't exist anymore, and Cloudera killed the free version of Hadoop.""It would be good to have more advanced analytics tools.""There is a lack of virtualization and presentation layers, so you can't take it and implement it like a radio solution."

More Apache Hadoop Cons →

"They should add more connectors to different platforms.""The solution’s pricing, scalability, and technical support response time could be improved.""The only issue our company has with Teradata IntelliFlex is that it is not cost-effective because of the way the product has been designed.""The reporting side wasn't very good in the past, but with the latest versions, it's getting better. Still, the friendliness of the PDC reporting and functionality needs to be improved.""The initial setup is complex because there are a lot of factors that come into play, including the amount of software and applications that require access."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Do take into consider that data storage and compute capacity scale differently and hence purchasing a "boxed" / 'all-in-one" solution (software and hardware) might not be the best idea."
  • "There are no licensing costs involved, hence money is saved on the software infrastructure."
  • "This is a low cost and powerful solution."
  • "The price of Apache Hadoop could be less expensive."
  • "If my company can use the cloud version of Apache Hadoop, particularly the cloud storage feature, it would be easier and would cost less because an on-premises deployment has a higher cost during storage, for example, though I don't know exactly how much Apache Hadoop costs."
  • "We don't directly pay for it. Our clients pay for it, and they usually don't complain about the price. So, it is probably acceptable."
  • "The price could be better. Hortonworks no longer exists, and Cloudera killed the free version of Hadoop."
  • "We just use the free version."

    Overview
The Apache Hadoop project develops open-source software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing. The Apache Hadoop software library is a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using simple programming models. It is designed to scale up from single servers to thousands of machines, each offering local computation and storage. Rather than rely on hardware to deliver high-availability, the library itself is designed to detect and handle failures at the application layer, so delivering a highly-available service on top of a cluster of computers, each of which may be prone to failures.

Teradata IntelliFlex delivers real-time intelligence to place vital data into the hands of front-line decision makers, while extending traditional data warehouse functionality into the realm of tactical decision making. With IntelliFlex, you can combine both these strategic and operational workloads in a single data warehouse.
