Quotes From Members Comparing AppDynamics APM vs New Relic APM

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Has helped us to increase customer acquisitions and reduce revenue leakage.Autodiscovery of application topology, based on real user traffic.Despite dozens of deployments across hundreds of applications- we have yet to see a case where AD is negatively impacting application execution or functionality. Before we moved the code to AppDynamics, we had to compare the agile process and also had to make sure that they're following the standards.Applications: This provides us insight into how our applications are performing within our environments and affords us the ability to identify opportunities and make changes to code / environment to effect positive performance lift. The most valuable feature is the live reporting on the current health\performance of our applicationIt allows us to configure health rules so that we can, based on our own experience, determine when an application is behaving incorrectly. It reduces the time to resolve issues and requires less manpower.

The most important thing is that it tells us where the latency in throughput and response time are.As New Relic is already integrated with Drupal, we can get our projects done with best practice and with the best value that we believe in.It has the ability to monitor random URLs not tied to the one pinger per application (though it costs extra). They instrument up from the bottom to the top – every piece of code - they have a very perfect read of what’s being done, and how long it’s taking. The most valuable feature is the New Relic APM module to deep-dive into the application, to get bottlenecks to the surface, and to improve application performance. Also, the New Relic Insights module creates a real-time dashboard on application performance to create awareness for the DevOps team.

Cons
There needs to be an option to capture all the sessions for all the users, not just samplings. The GUI can be overwhelming at first to a novice Dev or Ops support person, and the possible root causes of an issue do not bubble up to the first screen you see.Additional support for next gen mobile platforms also need to be high in the road map prioritizationsIt would help to maybe have a more graphical interface and more user-friendly graphics.I’d like to see better out-of-the-box visual reporting so that we can roll this up to management.I think I would like to see a better way to deploy and upgrade the machine agents that we use. Currently, we have to use SCCM, and that might just be our environment with the customer. The network diagnostics that they are adding will be really useful. They could add more detail into what is going on in the network. It could be a little more flexible in configuration on the back end.

Some of our customers see New Relic as a promising product to have, and we would like to deliver it to them. The only way we would be able to do that would be if we had server appliance for clients that we could install in their data centres.I think that there have been some questionable product enhancements. Over a year ago, New Relic rolled out a new navigation that really disrupted our workflow. It gives you amazing statistics, but doesn’t give you enough information about what to do with the statistics. They need to improve the alerting and dashboarding as these are the key features in DevOps.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Because it is priced per JVM, the price can increase pretty fast, into the millions. We have had challenges because we had to justify the price to our clients, as well, when we are putting in certain tools. It could be cheaper. It's a little cost prohibitive. There are so many features that also show a lot of value, but it’s not always easy to justify the cost.It is not a cheap tool, but you also save in manpower to setup because it is easy and fast. At the end of the day, I think the revenue is much better. BUT, they have an awful co-term mode of licensing. As a technical person, and as an application development team, they all understand that this is the right tool for us. But when it comes to budget and financial matters, it takes days and weeks to convince upper management to buy this tool. So they should do something more on licensing costs. The product’s licencing policy is competitive. However, properly identify and size your needs to get the best rate.

If it’s the right tool, it doesn’t matter what it costs because you’re going to get it back many-fold from your productivity. It would be nice if we could buy it annually instead of monthly.Cost is significant with a lot of extras. The monthly cost os $1000 per server per month, but it could be even more. We pay about $250 for the server, and then New Relic wants over $1000 to give us statistics on those servers.New Relic is either free with low retention and minimal functionalities, or expensive with full options and retention.
