We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
This solution has helped us in terms of discovering business processes. The stability of the ARIS BPM platform is quite good. The nice thing about it is the central database, where we can use all of our data. We can even manage users. The most valuable features are business process modeling and reporting. It has the ability to scale up, as well as integrate with other systems within the organization to get real-time information from dashboards and reports. You can relate different aspects of an organization to each other, and you can clearly define the rates seen in the application. It has allowed us to model our enterprise process architecture.BPA, the modeling tool, is the main module used because of our need for documentation.ARIS process modeling and analysis allows integration of end-to-end business processes with the organization's vision, strategies, and business objectives, through visual management.

For me, what I find to be the most valuable is its simplicity and the association with Microsoft Office. It has a built-in capability to capture process owners and managers against processes along with other process governance roles. The business process discovery is excellent. The diagram or blueprinting functionality of the solution are very good. It's quite easy. You can link the sub-processes and get a big overview of the whole process then. The solution is stable. All the refreshes run very well.It has the ability to document in different formats. It is not tied to a specific model. You can look at it from different angles and see the intuitive nature of it. It always generates a valid diagram. You cannot create something that is not BPMN compliant. It enables decisions based upon processes that we do model, and ultimately move forward with. You can use if from your mobile device or you can be on the desktop. It doesn't matter. You are always connected. It is cloud-based, so you don't have to install anything. The stability is pretty good. It is highly available, which is key. You don't lose your work and can autosave.

Cons
Integration with third-party tools should be improved (e.g. based on APIs).With ARIS BPM, the script creation is quite cumbersome. With version ten, we needed our developers to do scripting.I would like to see the reporting aspects improved.Making it more customizable and easy to learn would be a benefit. One of the biggest challenges is to realistically enable the defined structures of the processes that you have in ARIS documented, and then actually implement them in the business.Displaying role allocation matrix models in ARIS Connect needs improvement.Areas for improvement include sales, prospecting, shopping, customer service, after-sales (claims and advice for the client), and all processes pertaining to customer loyalty.Training is one of the important aspects for process awareness. As soon as a process is rolled out, process training is required. If ARIS could generate output in PowerPoint, it would be great for business users.

It is BPMN-compliant but the tool needs to be more involved to get into a completely 2.0 oriented tool. It has a few things but it's not the complete BPMN model. The user interface is quite easy at first but process analysts soon run into roadblocks of limited functionality, which is disappointing. The font size is really, really small and it's really not useful to print out process models because you cannot read what's written in different boxes. This makes it necessary for people to have access to the tool. We view licenses to see how the printing or output is. It's not very good. The solution is a very basic discovery product so it doesn't have that much modeling capability. This can be improved. We would like the ability to add additional custom colors. We would like to color additional items to add notes to the blueprint. We haven't yet been able to dabble in case management with Blueworks Live, as it is not yet offered with the product. The ability to create a very structured rule. With the capability that we have right now, Blueworks Live is more process focused. We should be able to enhance it to include a lot more of decisions as well.I wish Blueworks Live had simulations built in, but it doesn't. It also lacks a feature of reporting; ad hoc, drag and drop reporting. A lot of senior people are always asking for reports, and there's no reporting feature within IBM Blueworks.

Pricing and Cost Advice
In terms of pricing, it would be nice if it were more affordable. You will never get a fixed price for this product because they will go in and ask you what kind of environment would you like to set up? How many people will you work with? How big is your organization? Today, they have a fixed price to say, "Okay, just to start the business area, buy two licenses for modeling and eight people that can look into the product." They have this kind of fixed price. It's 50,000 Danish Krone. If you divided that by about six, then you get the pricing in dollars. Still, when you are going out, negotiate and find the right price. You will never get a fixed price: "It costs this and, if you take ten of these, seven of these and eight of these, and then it costs this." No, you negotiate every time. From my point of view, no, it is not cheap, but it is not too expensive because you get this big organization behind it, technical support, and all those things. It's not so expensive to use. It's a Rolls Royce in this field, I know that. Even for small organizations, they can get so much effect from using this tool, in a very fast way, so the money will be back in the customer's pocket very fast.If you can afford it, it's the best so far.ARIS Express is free.It is on the higher side.Negotiate. Price is high so make sure you’re getting the best deal.
