Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"AWS Storage Gateway has durability.""The most valuable feature is that it requires less utilization of space, compared to storing directly to the database of the system. It offers a unique way of doing things.""We like the flexibility and easy-to-use storage. I'm happy about the response time.""AWS Storage Gateway is used when there's a high requirement for storage and the company has their goal to move to the cloud and they are not comfortable having it in the data centers. They want the data to move to the cloud. We propose storage services that give them flexibility. They don't have to manage their data centers by themselves because it is being managed by Amazon or Microsoft. They do not have to worry about security and vulnerability issues. That is a strategy that companies can find value in and choose a cloud service.""AWS Storage Gateway's best feature is its secure storage.""The solution gives us the ability to move large amounts of data to the cloud and it gives us on-premises connectivity. Additionally, the storage can be shared from the cloud to on-premise.""The stability is probably the most valuable aspect of the product.""It's a cloud storage solution, which makes it quite flexible. If you have one terabyte today and need ten tomorrow, it's not a problem."

"With Nasuni Management Console (NMC), we get a single, centralized view of our entire internal structure and data center structure. This is very important because this caters to remote locations. One of the main care center teams is dependent on this solution. As it is directly connected to customers for the calls that they receive and troubleshoot, they can then help customers out in case they are not able to place an order.""Nasuni has helped to eliminate on-premises infrastructure. We were using about eight to 10 different types of vendors or small storage boxes for provisioning and shared access for users. We got rid of all those. That has eliminated operational overhead and footprint at our data center. We don't have to worry about any hardware or monitoring particular devices, and hundreds of devices have been decommissioned. Now, for provisioning, everything is on Nasuni. I assume this has made a big difference in costs.""I like the unlimited snapshotting.""The global file locking feature is valuable. The ability to quickly deploy new sites is also valuable.""I would recommend Nasuni because it's a proven product that has delivered results for us even in the worst-case scenario. If you're still using a traditional cloud solution like native Azure products, you are still susceptible to human error. Also, you would need to architect your backup and DR solutions, then integrate, maintain, and administer them.""We have less downtime and fewer trouble tickets from users who cannot access their shared files. Nasuni has reduced the friction and noise associated with file management because the devices are more reliable.""My clients are happy with Nasuni because the transmission is seamless, and it consolidates all the existing file servers into one location. Also, Nasuni has no boundaries. It's infinitely expandable. They don't have to rely on the service provider for backup and restoration. It's self-serve.""The most valuable feature is the storage in that it only keeps the last-used data locally, while everything else is backed up to the cloud. That way, we never really have to worry about file space in each office or the replication to the other file servers for DR."

Cons
"It would be better for us if they improved their integration capability.""Its interface could be easier to use.""Initial setup could be simplified and that would make the user experience better.""We've had issues with bandwidth in the past, and we don't know where the bottlenecks are. We're not sure if it's on the AWS side or with the clients or the configuration in between. There's no visibility.""AWS Storage Gateway's cost can be an issue.""I cannot say it's perfect.""The solution's setup is not easy and takes time to complete.""The security could improve in the solution."

"One area that we've recently spoken to Nasuni about is single sign-on. Another is integrating Nasuni with Azure Active Directory. In our particular case, that would allow for third-party consultants to access our Azure Active Directory environment as opposed to coming to our on-premises environment.""The only issue we face with Nasuni is from the performance perspective. Sometimes, when we deploy a Nasuni device, it doesn't meet our requirements. It's a capacity-planning issue.""When we first set up our bandwidth limiting, we had a few problems when it came to managing it. This is something that could be made easier; however, we were able to make the changes that we needed to for our environment.""I would like to see improvement in the training Nasuni provides. Compared to some of the other vendors out there, like Microsoft, where you can find how-to videos, Nasuni only has a lot of PDF documents that you have to go hunting for. It's workable, it certainly isn't a problem, but video walkthroughs would always be helpful.""We forecasted that the data at my client's organization would grow by about ten percent annually, but we are migrating more data because we are bringing in some servers that had not previously been within the scope of our license. We expected it would take us two years to reach a specific amount of data, but we hit that mark in one year. The licensing cost skyrocketed, so we need to renegotiate. It puts us in a bind because we are reliant on Nasuni for our service strategy. We can't deny our customers, but we also struggle to pay for that.""The customer portal could be improved, but it has been a while since I've used it. They might already have improved it.""When users from one office save their changes, their peers in another office can see the changes within minutes. Of course, this is an area for constant improvement and we hope that they can still reduce the amount of time it takes to replicate changes.""As administrators, we are used to having control equal to managing an on-prem device. In terms of log analysis and other things we want to do, Nasuni has some limitations limitation on what you do on the Nasuni. Nasuni could add some features to the GUI that make administration a little easier. It's tough when I have to move from one filter to another because there is no way to search it. We have to scroll up and down to find the name of it."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is a monthly subscription for the use of this solution."
  • "We pay a monthly license."
  • "AWS Storage Gateway is reasonably priced. The price depends on how much you need. The whole synopse model comes into the picture for the cloud where it depends on how many instances per VM and the price will increase. It's a reasonable price because with all the competition around the price has to be competitive. It's not very costly."
  • "The solution's price is reasonable."

  • "It is around $850 per terabyte per year. Any additional costs that you would incur are for the local caching devices that you'll need to access Nasuni. You kind of provide your own virtual machines or compute to access the data. You also pay for the object storage. So, there are three parts to it. There is the Nasuni license per terabyte. You would also pay for the actual object storage in the cloud, and then you would pay for virtual machines to access the storage."
  • "The pricing is on par with everybody else, and fair."
  • "The cost is based on the capacity, which is approximately $100 USD per terabyte."
  • "It has a license fee as well as hardware costs, which we would incur if we want to use Nasuni Cloud Storage Gateway for upgrades."
  • "I would not say it is economically priced, but it is affordable. If you can afford to pay for it, it is worth the money, but it is definitely not overpriced. It is priced about where it needs to be in the market. We were satisfied with the way they did their licensing and how they handled it. I believe they actually license by data size. It is based on how much data is being held on the machine and replicated, and that's completely understandable. So, for us, their pricing was as expected and affordable."
  • "Our agreement is set up such that we pay annually per terabyte, and we buy a chunk of it at a time. Then if we run out of space, we go back to them and buy another chunk."
  • "The cost of licensing is negotiated and billed annually per terabyte."
  • "There are annual costs that we pay for maintaining all of the snapshot history in the cloud. That is the primary cost that we pay. We occasionally buy newer Nasuni appliances or deploy them to new offices when the need occurs. That capital equipment expenses is less than the cost of buying new file storage systems. For the most part, you are trading a CapEx cost of storage equipment for an OpEx cost for management of all the snapshot data in the cloud."

    Overview

AWS Storage Gateway provides hybrid cloud storage services that give users access to unlimited cloud storage. As a part of the Amazon Web Services, one of the leading on-demand cloud computing platforms, the AWS Storage Gateway allows you to use the AWS storage without the need to rewrite your applications. It does this by providing protocols like iSCSI, NFS, and SMB. It works by caching frequently accessed data on premises and simultaneously storing data on AWS, as well as optimizing data transfer in the cloud. The optimization it provides for AWS is done by sending only changed data and by compressing data.

AWS Storage Gateway provides the option for in-cloud processing by integrating with Amazon S3 and FSx for Windows File Server. It works with AWS Identity and Access Management to secure access management to services and recourse. It is also compatible with data encryption in the cloud by working with AWS Key Management Service, for monitoring with Amazon CloudWatch, and for activity of account logging with AWS CloudTrail. Through AWS Backup, you can manage backup and retention policies for AWS Storage Gateway. Users have access to a maximum supported size of local cache per gateway of up to 64 TiB on a virtual machine.

The use cases for AWS Storage Gateway include the ability to store incoming data from on-premises instruments in Amazon Simple Storage Services, as well as using AWS for data analysis. It provides the opportunity to modernize your interactive file sharing while simplifying management and reducing costs. AWS Storage Gateway is also suitable for backing up data in the cloud, giving users virtually unlimited scale.

The following services allow Amazon Storage Gateway to provide on-premises applications with access to cloud storage:

    • Amazon S3 File Gateway: Using file protocols like Network File System and Server Message Block, users can store and retrieve objects in Amazon Simple Storage Service S3.

    • Amazon FSx File Gateway: Store and retrieve files in Amazon FSx for Windows File Server through the Server Message Block protocol.

    • Volume Gateway: AWS Storage Gateway offers users block storage for on-premises applications. Users can make copies of volumes and manage retention, as well as restore snapshots.

    • Tape Gateway: Backup applications are provided with an iSCSI virtual tape library (VTL) interface that consists of virtual tape drivers, virtual tapes, and a virtual media changer.

    AWS Storage Gateway Benefits

Due to its value-added features, AWS Storage Gateway has many benefits, which include:

    • Ability to store data in AWS on various devices
    • Provides virtually unlimited cloud storage because it's based on the AWS cloud
    • Integrates with many AWS management services, such as AWS CloudTrail, AWS Identity, Access Management (IAM), Amazon CloudWatch
