Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features are the special plugins such as SAP HANA databases, Microsoft SQL, and various types of virtualization.""The solution has extensive documentation and a very active community.""Bacula is pretty stable.""It is easy to scale Bacula Enterprise even if your system is growing tremendously in data and servers.""It can be used in virtually any environment we have onsite.""It brought many advantages - such as the learning curve being very light.""It works great and it provides you with several standard tools to restore your backup, even after a big failure."

"The dashboards in Micro Focus Data Protector are very good. They are similar to the dashboards in Veeam Backup & Replication.""It is very easy to use and the interaction with various systems is very handy.""I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""I like that Micro Focus keeps a separate catalog of our data.""It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software.""The initial setup is very easy.""The solution is easy to use.""This solution is quite stable because we have only three users."

Cons
"We are looking for a unique interface that can rule both enterprise and open source editions. Such a thing does not yet exist.""The initial setup could be a bit easier.""A more user-friendly interface (GUI) can be developed.""Bacula needs a graphical user interface because, for administrators, the command-line interface is okay, but for the average user it is not very easy.""Easier setup and configuration, perhaps including a GUI, would be an improvement.""We would like to see an improvement in the functionality of the GUI.""It could improve its interface or offer a specific screen for the manager of the company."

More Bacula Enterprise Cons →

"Many of our users complain about the GUI. You still need to rely on the command line interface. Because it originated as a Unix system, Data Protector is still a command line-driven solution, which makes it seem rather dated compared to systems that are built around a GUI from day one. It doesn't affect the functionality, but some people don't find it user-friendly.""VM backups needs to be improved. They need to make it similar to the way Veeam and Commvault are doing the virtual backups.""Micro Focus are improving Data Protector with every new version and since we began undergoing training with the latest version we have not faced any real challenges yet. However, their support does need to be improved, in my opinion. In certain critical cases that we've had, they did not provide a satisfactory level of support.""We have a lot of requests for the Micro Focus team, particularly in terms of the Japanese data pattern, as it's not as good now. The Japanese data pattern accuracy of the Micro Focus Data Protector needs to be improved because there are a lot of false negatives and false positives. We are currently testing this and our product team has been communicating with the Micro Focus team.""Virtualization.""Other tools seem to be easier to use.""It's very expensive compared to Veeam and other similar solutions.""Integration with the market applications must be improved, such as MS Exchange, MS Active Directory, SAP and Oracle. Other backup tools are more efficient with the integrated backups."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "This is an open-source solution."

  • "The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
  • "It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
  • "Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."

  • "The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
  • "The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
