Quotes From Members Comparing Barracuda CloudGen Firewall vs. FortiGate-VM

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Inbound and outbound traffic analysis, rule creation wizard, and the GUI portal are among the key features.SD WAN functions increased business continuity by more than 40% accuracy and speed compared to existing MPLS networks.Add-on features such as Virus Scanning, ATP, and web filtering add another level of protection and block malware before it gets to the end user.Single device, multiple functions - I do not need to purchase a web application firewall, a proxy server, a VPN device and so many others because these are all built in to this one device.TINA (Transport Independent Network Architecture) VPN features - Allows automatic VPN configuration with little or no input from the tech. Drag and drop lines between Barracuda units and the VPN is built automatically.Enables us to define user application-level access, so our customers can work anytime from anywhere.Live monitoring of what is happening inside and on the interfaces, either ingress or egress. Most people are using enterprise applications remotely, and there is no license for SSL VPN, or in other words point-to-site. There is no limit on that. On other devices there is a specific limit and you have to pay per use for SSL VPN.

It is very useful to make lists for rules and prepare firewall rules. The customer care center of Fortinet is good. For all the requests that we have done, they work as fast as possible, so this is a good point for Fortinet. There is an interesting possibility of building a tunnel to a firewall from access points. We use this feature for small branch offices with one to two employees with access to central RDP servers. One top feature is the ability to use the appliance as a WLAN controller for up to 10 access points with the new 5.6 firmware.A top feature is the really good web interface and the classic Fortinet features, such as IPS, IDS, AV scanner, and spam filter.Initial setup was quite straightforward, as we can simply head to the required sections to apply the planned network. We use it to ensure that our network is properly protected from viruses and malware. The initial setup was quite straightforward.

Cons
A rule for email announcements, when configured hits occur, would be a great improvement for a more efficient experience. The user interface (UI) is not up to the mark and needs improvement.Awareness about the product is limited to the OEM technical team. Can be underpowered if you choose to use all available add-on features. Just be careful when sizing your unit. Make sure you take into account what features you will be turning on, and work with your sales rep to get the model that can handle that load. It's a little bit complex in terms of handling. If you implement a change, there is a specific point where you have to commit it. It's not like you just push a button and it's always committed. If you don't know to check whether your commit command has been executed or not... that is something Barracuda needs to work on.When you do any commit, it locks your next access. If you are making a change to the device, from the security standpoint it's fine, but from the admin side it's not good. When you make changes, after each and every one it becomes locked. When you login from some sources, there is no feature in this box which can log you out after a certain timeout.Sometimes we have a need for detailed reports. Barracuda NG Firewall does not have a reports module and uses a satellite application.

The price is sometimes very expensive. In the first two releases of FortiOS 5.6, we had some trouble with the SSL VPN service. Sometimes it stopped working, and the IPS daemon too.Improvements are needed for the responsive UI and JIT traffic reporting. The management tools should be more user-friendly.We encountered scalability issues in IPSec Module. The tunnels freeze sometimes. There were challenges during setup, and many of them were self-inflicted.The user interface (UI) and the performance of interface both need improvement. We have experience stability issues, when the product sizing is wrong or on configuration errors.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Pricing is good. Licensing is pretty much automatic if using Control Center.Pricing and licensing are fine. It's worth the value because every four years, if I buy any other product, I have to replace my hardware. But with Barracuda I get a free hardware upgrade. Today I'm using Xbox. After four years I can take another Xbox or a Ybox.It is a product with a very transparent model of licensing. In the sense of hidden expenses, they do not exist with this model. We evaluated a lot of different options. We concluded that Barracuda NG Firewall provided the most features for an exemplary price. My advice is to try and evaluate it (Barracuda offers a trial period of one month).

The price: It is a bit higher than the other competitors. This is why I started to look at other brands. The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful. The price is expensive compared with other vendors, like Cisco and Huawei. The best part of Fortinet is the license is bundled together, so it is easy to use and apply. The pricing and licensing are not as expensive as its competitors. It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront. It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing. It is an expensive solution if you are migrating from an open source solution.
