Single device, multiple functions - I don't need to buy a WAF, proxy server, or VPN device - all are built-in
Find out what your peers are saying about Barracuda CloudGen Firewall vs. FortiGate-VM and other solutions. Updated: March 2019.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
We moved from a legacy firewall to the ASA with FirePOWER, increasing our Internet Edge defense dramatically.
The Cisco ASA NGFW can easily scale. If you want, you can scale it to a lot of traffic. It's an X file, so all of our users are going through it.
Right now, Cisco ASA NGFW has given us a lot of improvement. We are planning to move to a new facility and will be a much larger organization.
The feature that I found most valuable is the overall stability of the product.
The stability of Cisco ASA is excellent compared to other products on the market. Because of our customer experience as an integrator company, our clients never report any performance problems. We have a good performance reputation with Cisco ASA.
I would say the Firepower module is most valuable. I'm trying more to transition to this kind firewall. I had to study a little on Palo Alto Networks equipment. There is a lot I have to learn about the difference.
We have multiple secure internal networks linked with our plants. We are from a oil company, so we have multiple plant areas which need to have restricted network access. Therefore, we are using it for restricting access to the plant area.
The initial setup was completely straightforward.
Barracuda is very prompt at blocking any new spam which comes out.
The product is foolproof. It has done everything that we have needed with the amount of email that we receive, and it handles it quite well.
We enjoy the reduction in terms of labor.
Inbound and outbound traffic analysis, rule creation wizard, and the GUI portal are among the key features.
Add-on features such as Virus Scanning, ATP, and web filtering add another level of protection and block malware before it gets to the end user.
Single device, multiple functions - I do not need to purchase a web application firewall, a proxy server, a VPN device and so many others because these are all built in to this one device.
TINA (Transport Independent Network Architecture) VPN features - Allows automatic VPN configuration with little or no input from the tech. Drag and drop lines between Barracuda units and the VPN is built automatically.
Enables us to define user application-level access, so our customers can work anytime from anywhere.
It handles our current load with ease, and I think it can handle a bit more. It definitely can handle a lot more capacity than we currently use.
It is very useful to make lists for rules and prepare firewall rules.
The customer care center of Fortinet is good. For all the requests that we have done, they work as fast as possible, so this is a good point for Fortinet.
There is an interesting possibility of building a tunnel to a firewall from access points. We use this feature for small branch offices with one to two employees with access to central RDP servers.
One top feature is the ability to use the appliance as a WLAN controller for up to 10 access points with the new 5.6 firmware.
A top feature is the really good web interface and the classic Fortinet features, such as IPS, IDS, AV scanner, and spam filter.
Initial setup was quite straightforward, as we can simply head to the required sections to apply the planned network.
We use it to ensure that our network is properly protected from viruses and malware.
The product would be improved if the GUI could be brought into the 21st Century...
Cisco could possibly improve upon their user interface design. There is a deep learning curve to the product if you are a newcomer.
There is no support here in Georgia. If something goes wrong, support is not always very helpful with the other firewalls or other products.
One of my main concerns, an area that could use improvement is in adjusting the need to buy a license to enable features.
Usually, the customers are satisfied, but I am going to recommend that all clients upgrade to FirePOWER management. I want Cisco to improve the feature called anti-spam. We use a Cisco only email solution, that's why we need the anti-spam on email facility.
The installation and integration of Cisco ASA with FirePOWER can be improved. The management with Fortigate is easier than Cisco ASA on FirePOWER. The management side of Cisco ASA can be improved so it can be more easily configured and used.
Most of the time, when I try to run Java, it is not compatible with ASA's current operating systems.
We have to rely on Cisco ASDM to access the firewall interface. This needs improvement. Because we have a web-based interface, and it is a lot more user-friendly.
To start working with spam, it takes a while because the product has to see that multiple emails are coming in with all the spam. If it could reduce that amount of time, then we would reduce the amount of users who are receiving spam.
The usability for the administrator's experience needs improvement. My system administrator has some questions about its overall connectivity and flexibility.
A rule for email announcements, when configured hits occur, would be a great improvement for a more efficient experience.
Can be underpowered if you choose to use all available add-on features. Just be careful when sizing your unit. Make sure you take into account what features you will be turning on, and work with your sales rep to get the model that can handle that load.
It's a little bit complex in terms of handling. If you implement a change, there is a specific point where you have to commit it. It's not like you just push a button and it's always committed. If you don't know to check whether your commit command has been executed or not... that is something Barracuda needs to work on.
When you do any commit, it locks your next access. If you are making a change to the device, from the security standpoint it's fine, but from the admin side it's not good. When you make changes, after each and every one it becomes locked.
When you login from some sources, there is no feature in this box which can log you out after a certain timeout.
Sometimes we have a need for detailed reports. Barracuda NG Firewall does not have a reports module and uses a satellite application.
The GUI could be improved.
The price is sometimes very expensive.
In the first two releases of FortiOS 5.6, we had some trouble with the SSL VPN service. Sometimes it stopped working, and the IPS daemon too.
Improvements are needed for the responsive UI and JIT traffic reporting.
The management tools should be more user-friendly.
We encountered scalability issues in IPSec Module. The tunnels freeze sometimes.
There were challenges during setup, and many of them were self-inflicted.
The user interface (UI) and the performance of interface both need improvement.
Pricing and Cost Advice
We paid about $7,000 for the Cisco firewall, plus another small Cisco router and the lead switch. It was under the combined license. It's a final agreement.
The cost is a big factor for us. This is why we are using it only in our restricted area. They are very much higher than their competitors in the market.
Licensing is expensive compared to other solutions.
Pricing is high, but it is essentially a corporate decision.
The cost is a bit high compared to other solutions in the market.
Cisco recently has become very expensive.
The cost is a bit higher than other competitive solutions on the market.
It is considered on the "high end" of the spectrum.
It would be nice if the pricing and licensing offered for less.
Purchasing through AWS Marketplace was good. We did it because it was easy.
Pricing is good. Licensing is pretty much automatic if using Control Center.
Pricing and licensing are fine. It's worth the value because every four years, if I buy any other product, I have to replace my hardware. But with Barracuda I get a free hardware upgrade. Today I'm using Xbox. After four years I can take another Xbox or a Ybox.
It is a product with a very transparent model of licensing. In the sense of hidden expenses, they do not exist with this model.
We evaluated a lot of different options. We concluded that Barracuda NG Firewall provided the most features for an exemplary price.
My advice is to try and evaluate it (Barracuda offers a trial period of one month).
The price: It is a bit higher than the other competitors. This is why I started to look at other brands.
The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful.
The price is expensive compared with other vendors, like Cisco and Huawei.
The best part of Fortinet is the license is bundled together, so it is easy to use and apply.
The pricing and licensing are not as expensive as its competitors.
It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront.
It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing.
It is an expensive solution if you are migrating from an open source solution.
