We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The performance is good.""I like Fortinet's cloud management. It allows me to manage all my devices in different branches for three cloud accounts. Even though I use on-prem devices, I can manage everything on the cloud.""The technical support in our region is excellent.""I like that you are able to manage FortiGate from the FortiManager to create a more centralized environment.""The product offers very good security.""Mainly the FortiGate reporting system is very good. It guides us through all the expectations of security. Fortinet provides us all that we need for security. Also, Fortinet FortiGate is a next-generation firewall. It is much more advanced than others.""Some of the valuable features are the firewall, IPS, web filter, and gateway capabilities. Additionally, it is easy to use and flexible.""Security solution with a straightforward and quick setup. It's a stable and scalable product."

"The ability to be deployed and supported remotely is valuable.""Its central management, especially when it comes to distributed environments, is great. I can generate and save a setting and then apply that setting across the network with just one click.""The most valuable feature for us is the ability to offer firewall support to our clients.""Its stability and SD-WAN features are the most valuable.""We use Barracuda NG Firewall as a border firewall. We trough it to control all in/out Internet traffic.""Easy integration with some other systems like LDAP or Active Directory to manage other permissions and the division of external access and internal access.""I would most definitely recommend this solution to other people.""Most people are using enterprise applications remotely, and there is no license for SSL VPN, or in other words point-to-site. There is no limit on that. On other devices there is a specific limit and you have to pay per use for SSL VPN."

More Barracuda CloudGen Firewall Pros →

"If you have a solution that is creating a script and you need to deploy many implementations, you can create a script in the device and it will be the same for all. After that, you just have to do the fine tuning.""The TAC is always very helpful. We pay for Tier 1 support, so we get whatever we need from them. They always give us a solution. If they can't give us an answer that day, they get back to us within at least 24 hours with a solution or fix. I have never had a problem with the TAC. I would rate them as 10 out of 10.""Cisco Secure Firewall improved our organization. We have it in every one of our French offices.""Malicious URLs are being blocked.""It's very stable and mature.""The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS.""The IP filter configuration for specific political and Static NAT has been most valuable.""I love the ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager) which is the management suite. It's a GUI and you're able to see everything at a glance without using the command line. There are those who love the CLI, but with ASDM it is easier to see where everything is going and where the problems are."

Cons
"Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more capabilities for troubleshooting VPN connections. For example, I do get some feedback about the current status, but I could use some history and logging of important events. The information is logged in our Syslog server, but I could use that information from the device. If they could provide a GUI to have some more insight on what's going with my VPN would be useful.""With FortiGate, the main complaint that I have heard is about the technical support.""One of the problems I was having was with user mapping, and it is an issue for which I have escalated tickets with Fortinet support.""We had some issues in the beginning while setting it up, but after doing the firmware update, it is working fine.""The room for improvement is about the global delivery time period. Usually I need to wait for almost one month to deliver it overseas. So if you can shorten the deliver time it'd be great.""The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced.""It does not have key authentication for admin access.""I would suggest that Fortinet add sandboxing to their solution."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"When you do any commit, it locks your next access. If you are making a change to the device, from the security standpoint it's fine, but from the admin side it's not good. When you make changes, after each and every one it becomes locked.""When you login from some sources, there is no feature in this box which can log you out after a certain timeout.""The usability for the administrator's experience needs improvement. My system administrator has some questions about its overall connectivity and flexibility.""If you have another brand of VPN where you have to put an SSL VPN between two devices, Barracuda doesn't support that at a certain point. You can't actually build the VPN between Barracuda and a different device of a different brand.""The price is a bit higher than other vendors.""Can be underpowered if you choose to use all available add-on features. Just be careful when sizing your unit. Make sure you take into account what features you will be turning on, and work with your sales rep to get the model that can handle that load.""The technical manuals, at times, have images that don't match the actual screens and are not always as clear as they could be on the configuration.""It would be better if they had a trace and trap feature. It's hard for me to say anything bad about Barracuda. This is because we had a firewall go down in the town of Kirkland Lake, and it was a blown-out port, and they had an instant replacement."

More Barracuda CloudGen Firewall Cons →

"Cisco Secure Firewall's integration with cloud providers has room for improvement. We could do more in terms of integration, for example, if we had a tag on an instance.""Its implementation was not straightforward. It was mainly because we were running two projects together.""This product is managed using the Firepower Management Center (FMC), but it would be better if it also supported the command-line interface (CLI).""I would like to see them add more next-generation features so that you don't need a lot of appliances to do just one task. It should be a single solution.""Cisco ASA is not a next-generation firewall product.""The management of the firewalls could be improved because there are a lot of bugs.""The configuration is an area that needs improvement.""Cisco is not cheap, however, it is worth investing in these technologies."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is a product with a very transparent model of licensing. In the sense of hidden expenses, they do not exist with this model. "
  • "We evaluated a lot of different options. We concluded that Barracuda NG Firewall provided the most features for an exemplary price. "
  • "My advice is to try and evaluate it (Barracuda offers a trial period of one month)."
  • "Pricing is good. Licensing is pretty much automatic if using Control Center."
  • "Pricing and licensing are fine. It's worth the value because every four years, if I buy any other product, I have to replace my hardware. But with Barracuda I get a free hardware upgrade. Today I'm using Xbox. After four years I can take another Xbox or a Ybox."
  • "It would be nice if the pricing and licensing offered for less."
  • "Purchasing through AWS Marketplace was good. We did it because it was easy."
  • "In general, it tends to be cheaper than most solutions."
  • More Barracuda CloudGen Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
