Quotes From Members Comparing BMC TrueSight Operations Management vs CA Unified Infrastructure Management

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Valuable features include wide support for monitoring, strong event management, service management capability, baselining (analytics) and easy to integrate other tools with it.It provides common administration, and a Single Sign-On Platform with RBAC, which eases the cross launch between multiple toolsThe tailoring of the knowledge modules has been particularly useful as I can streamline the agents to only report on critical events. It is very helpful to be able to apply rule-based routing to alerts.TSOM's ability to consolidate alerts into a single location and provide filtering of alerts is great. It has provided us with a single location to host all events to be viewed/monitored by our NOC. This has greatly helped them to streamline their processes. It allows our operations team to have one single application to reference when investigating issues in our environment.Signature baselines, which have allowed us to fine tune many of our events and significantly reduce the number of events generated.

The benefit is easy installation. Thus, the model approach of the product and out-of-the-box probes, which deliver direct value. You can integrate clouds, hybrid infrastructure, and on-premise infrastructure into one product. It is the foundation for our monitoring solution.Having all of our information within one tool set; our alerts, our monitors, and the things that our operations team needs to function. It reduced cycles for a lot of quick out-of-the-box functionality. It also allowed us to get away from being stuck in SNMP, VTP V2, based off of agent deployment.Easy admin functionality. You can quickly do all the admin functionality without reducing cycles. It's easy to push out across numerous servers. Very scalable. The number of probes available. Out of the box, I believe about 200 probes are available. And, if there's a probe that is not available, you can write one. You can also go to the communities and suggest, and based on demand, CA will write one for you.

Cons
Deployment requires lots of resources (servers). It has too many consoles. The knowledge modules could be more lightweight in size. At present, the installation packages can be quite large.BMC's solutions for cloud monitoring (monitoring of AWS and Azure resources) are very poor in stability and customization.BMC's online documentation is often incorrect or incomplete.I would really like to see out-of-the-box support for monitoring uninterruptible power supplies.More modules for less popular applications and better documentation.I think the ease of deployment needs to be looked at. It would be great if the deployment was faster and easier. The sizing (which is difficult), the maintenance of it and the upgrade paths. This is a difficult area which is not easy to cover, as every client has a different approach of implementing the product.

We want to see more investment in the UI and the dashboard. How we can get more native information from CA's solutions. They need to continue to advance the filter capabilities, and provide more input fields.I would like to see auditability. We've built our own audit functionality to ensure that every CI has the desired model configuration applied to it. And we run that on a daily basis. If that became part of the product, I think it might be a little bit less intensive in terms of resource, because we're doing it with scripts. It is a little complex to use versus other softwares. The biggest feature that I've been hoping they would enhance on is inventory management: things like adding/removing nodes. It needs a little bit more functionality in the Admin Console. The UIM has no features through goods and services yet.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Pricing is very high. The solutions are not the cheapest but are robust and stable. License model is rather complex and BMC do often change the model.Use conservative figures. In terms of hardware, monitored servers and also effort. The product is not cheap. But as with other products, you get what you pay for.

Reasonable setup cost and licensing prices. The license cost depends on the number of probes and robots. The product-price ratio is better than other brands such as Fortinet or SonicWall. This product is expensive compared to other vendors (SolarWinds, ManageEngine).
