Quotes From Members Comparing BMC TrueSight Operations Management vs ITRS Geneos

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Valuable features include wide support for monitoring, strong event management, service management capability, baselining (analytics) and easy to integrate other tools with it.It provides common administration, and a Single Sign-On Platform with RBAC, which eases the cross launch between multiple toolsThe tailoring of the knowledge modules has been particularly useful as I can streamline the agents to only report on critical events. It is very helpful to be able to apply rule-based routing to alerts.TSOM's ability to consolidate alerts into a single location and provide filtering of alerts is great. It has provided us with a single location to host all events to be viewed/monitored by our NOC. This has greatly helped them to streamline their processes. It allows our operations team to have one single application to reference when investigating issues in our environment.Signature baselines, which have allowed us to fine tune many of our events and significantly reduce the number of events generated.

This tool allows one to analyse, integrate and customize as per the systems and allows you to set your own rules.ITRS uses SNMP to communicate with our devices as well as SNMP net probes installed on our servers.Custom script toolkitsThe ability to logically normalize data gathered from multiple types of sources via pre-built plugins is extremely powerful. This functionality, coupled with the ability to import custom data via the Toolkit plugin allows Geneos to be leveraged to monitor every system in the enterprise. The NetProbe carries over 100 samplers which are capable of monitoring hardware, OS, and the application layer.ITRS can define rules to alert when certain parameters that you monitor breach a threshold. Rules can be configured to fire recovery actions automatically to clear the alertAbility to monitor logs for potential issues to prevent app outages before problems get a chance to arise. That's invaluable for our teams in a fast-paced trading environment.Geneos automatically sends email notifications when any batch job fails, the database is down or the website is down. It is automatically monitoring everything and reduces manual effort.

Cons
Deployment requires lots of resources (servers). It has too many consoles. The knowledge modules could be more lightweight in size. At present, the installation packages can be quite large.BMC's solutions for cloud monitoring (monitoring of AWS and Azure resources) are very poor in stability and customization.BMC's online documentation is often incorrect or incomplete.I would really like to see out-of-the-box support for monitoring uninterruptible power supplies.More modules for less popular applications and better documentation.I think the ease of deployment needs to be looked at. It would be great if the deployment was faster and easier. The sizing (which is difficult), the maintenance of it and the upgrade paths. This is a difficult area which is not easy to cover, as every client has a different approach of implementing the product.

I would also like to see suggested guidelines to accomplish a monitoring task. The issue is that ITRS is so flexible that there is more than one way to complete a task, each with benefits and disadvantages.Backward compatibility with deprecated features and in system documentation on what configuration areas are needed to be updated.Data visualization – real time and historical – is a weakness.I would like better access to the data that is being collected.I would like to see ITRS integrate its setup editor with a SVN to check-in setup XML after major changes. We all look at the same things - CPU, disk space, paging stats, service status with RAG status on each. That could be provided straight out, saving significant time.Currently, it is difficult to monitor secure websites using SSL or with SSO enabled. The dashboard feature is full of bugs. Grouping items results in a distorted dashboard.
