Executive Summary
Updated on Jun 28, 2023

We performed a comparison between BMC TrueSight Operations Management and ITRS Geneos based on real PeerSpot user reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: BMC has clear instructions and a straightforward process, but the environment's complexity can impact the setup time. On the other hand, ITRS Geneos requires onsite support for weeks, and building the monitoring catalog takes a significant amount of time. The number of people necessary for deployment depends on the organization's size.
  • Features: BMC TrueSight Operations Management is strong in proactive and granular monitoring, and event management. Meanwhile, ITRS Geneos offers a highly customizable and flexible dashboard, along with real-time monitoring capabilities.
  • Pricing: BMC TrueSight Operations Management has a high price point but is transparent and based on the number of devices, while ITRS Geneos has a market-related pricing model with some extra costs for add-ons. However, ITRS Geneos may be too expensive for non-banking and non-finance industries.
  • Service and Support: BMC TrueSight Operations Management's customer service is a mixed bag, with varying opinions on its quality and knowledge. In contrast, ITRS Geneos is praised for its exceptional technical support, although there is room for improvement in communication and input templates.
  • ROI: While BMC TrueSight Operations Management's ROI is unclear, ITRS Geneos provides several advantages. These include proactive alert management, a decrease in high-severity incidents, and the avoidance of in-house development.

Comparison Results: BMC TrueSight Operations Management is chosen over ITRS Geneos based on its robust event management tool, precise monitoring and metrics data, and Helix Innovation Studio for app development. ITRS Geneos is customizable with real-time monitoring, but needs improvement in dashboard creation, deployment automation, and cloud monitoring. BMC TrueSight Operations Management is affordable with a clear licensing model for companies of all sizes, while ITRS Geneos may be too costly for non-finance industries.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"What I like best about BMC TrueSight Operations Management is that it allows you to do granular monitoring and improves VM load.""We're using native monitoring capabilities for all our server hardware, for visibility for applications, for URLs, for webpage response and accuracy, and for monitoring network throughput in a lot of particular instances. We're using lightweight protocols for pinging, for DNS, for LDAP.""Signature baselines, which have allowed us to fine tune many of our events and significantly reduce the number of events generated.""It allows our operations team to have one single application to reference when investigating issues in our environment.""The solution has a very good business event manager tool.""Helix Innovation Studio is a very good feature. It allows us to develop our own enterprise applications and make them available for the customers.""The event management tool builds correlation logic and protection algorithms into a field of events that is valuable when a data center goes down.""The ability to pull hosts together to show what processes are running, so it can be used for change management."

"The solution's log monitoring and alerting mechanisms are very user-friendly and easy to plug and play.""The great advantage of this tool is real-time monitoring.""Real-time log monitoring with desktop alerts is valuable as it tells us immediately when there is an issue.""In my experience, being able to monitor our databases is a valuable feature as we can create our own queries and aren't reliant on the in-built ones.""The ability to build integrations to tools that are not monitored out of the box is the most valuable feature.""ITRS can define rules to alert when certain parameters that you monitor breach a threshold. Rules can be configured to fire recovery actions automatically to clear the alert""I would say that it is an easy-to-use monitoring tool. Amongst the available monitoring tools, it is a really good option.""The solution is used across the entire investment banking division, covering environments such as electronic trading, algo-trading, fixed income, FX, etc. It monitors that environment and enables a bank to significantly reduce down time. Although hard to measure, since implementation, we have probably seen some increased stability because of it and we have definitely seen teams a lot more aware of their environment. Consequently, we can be more proactive in challenging and improving previously undetected weaknesses."

Cons
"Specifically around application performance monitoring, BMC is definitely not the market leader. The Dynatraces, the New Relics and the like are more of the market leaders in that space. I would like to see them grow that space a little bit more aggressively. It has not really been their bread and butter.""The UI for the end users could be improved and more flexible than it is now.""More modules for less popular applications and better documentation.""The pricing could be better.""The product must provide more AI capabilities.""The solution should improve predicting events and flaws in service. It also needs to improve integration with other systems.""BMC's solutions for cloud monitoring (monitoring of AWS and Azure resources) are very poor in stability and customization.""In a large company of our size, we need multiple people in our company trained. So, I have to take the training classes. Then, I have to go and train the rest of my organization. I would prefer to say to the other people on my team, "Go to this link and..." Or, "Here's a list of training sessions that you can go to which are online and that are free." I think it would help the adoption of their product in the marketplace, personally."

More BMC TrueSight Operations Management Cons →

"The ITA, the post-incident analytics, could be improved.""I would like ITRS Geneos to develop an app, where instead of going to specific login terminals or logging into laptops or desktops to check alerts, we can have visibility in the app itself.""One thing that could be improved in terms of rapid scaling would be more ability to clone aspects of an implementation. It seems like there are opportunities in this area, where we have repetitive tasks to do when it comes to implementing things on new servers or on new gateways. It would be great if there was an easy way to clone something that had already been done.""The main feature that needs work is the Dashboard designer.""t needs to have better middleware integration for things such as application and Microsft SQL servers.""Mobile phone integration is probably not as rich as it could be.""Their cloud monitoring solution needs to be improved. I have already given them the feedback that it's not capable of meeting the latest technology needs.""Much of the reporting outside of the user interface is very basic and requires much customization to be useful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Use conservative figures. In terms of hardware, monitored servers and also effort. The product is not cheap. But as with other products, you get what you pay for."
  • "The solutions are not the cheapest but are robust and stable. License model is rather complex and BMC do often change the model."
  • "Pricing is very high."
  • "We pay license fees of between $150 and $200 per asset. There is an enterprise software license fee, and then you pay a percentage for your maintenance, and then Premier Support. For example, if you buy a two-year license for the product, then the maintenance fee is added to that for two years at X percent a year. Then there's a small fee on top of that for Premier Support..."
  • "Pricing is all volume-driven. I think we were paying between $80 and $85 per license. That's per unit, for a perpetual license. You pay it one time and then, every year, you pay 20 percent of that for annual maintenance and support. But now that we've grown, we've purchased tens of thousands of licenses and the cost per license has gone down to something like less than $30..."
  • "It is a large, complex product. So, there is a commitment of manpower to deploy it, as it is not a cheap product."
  • "There is a big upfront cost when you buy the license, then there is annual maintenance. We look at, if I bought a license and paid for maintenance for five years, then average it out, what would be my monthly cost. We have had some of the competing tools come in around four dollars. This is coming in as a premium, which is why I don't have it deployed as I would like it. Therefore, we're in negotiations right now. If I can get it down to the four dollar range, I will triple my deployment in a year and a half."
  • "The only possible additional cost that I can mention, that you might not be aware of, is that it uses Oracle partitioning, if you use Oracle. There are Oracle partitioning fees that go with that."

  • "You will get the best price if you get a single global deal."
  • "The product is priced quite high. There are pricing options for customers based on the size of the environment and plug-ins used by the monitoring system."
  • "Pricing and licensing is based on the requirements."
  • "The licensing cost may seem expensive upfront. However, the service is outstanding, the tool does things that no other tools can do, and the customizability more than makes up for the cost of licensing."
  • "Pricing is the touchy subject, even here. Upper management always wants us to find a cheaper solution. But we have so much integrated with ITRS... It's expensive, but it does its job very well. And you set it and go."
  • "It is expensive. They have to look at the model around when we move to cloud and how that's going to work. The licensing cost does pay off because of the improvements in support to our business."
  • "When I first came in, their pricing was very high. ITRS had a high expectation of what their price should be based on perceived value. I think they have been realizing, more recently, that there are other competitors, so their pricing is a lot better. Licensing for on-premise is okay, however I feel there is quite some work to be done for cloud and containers. We're still working with them to try and work out what that pricing should look like."
  • "Given our spend and the amount of service we have in it, the pricing is quite reasonable."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by BMC TrueSight Operations Management users.

Mudassir A., Sr. Technical Consultant at a tech services company, says, "The event management part of TrueSight Operations Management, in my experience, is probably the best in the market. You have endless flexibility. You can build your own rules, you have the MRL language, and you can implement any kind of logic on the alerts. It may be correlation, abstraction, or executing something as a result of the alerts. You have almost the whole range of options available for event management using the available customization."

A General Manager - Sales at a tech services company explains, “There are many features that are most valuable in BMC TrueSight Operations Management. First, its proactive monitoring feature is highly developed. BMC TrueSight Operations Management is an intelligent tool that's able to understand day-to-day operations and consistently gives alerts. The alerts are not automatic for some activities, e.g. some alerts are given monthly, while some are given more frequently. The consolidated dashboard where you can enjoy a single pane of glass to look at the full infrastructure from the servers to the VMs, to the clouds, to the application, to the database, to the network devices, including having a topology, and having a tendency map of the topology of key offerings, is also a valuable feature of this solution.”

An Information Systems Computer System Controller at an insurance company states, “The business event manager tool that consolidates detailed information from a single instance of equipment is the most valuable thing for me. It provides support for the business tools and the IT services which come from several systems.”
