Quotes From Members Comparing CA Spectrum vs eG Enterprise

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The monitoring just comes to us: "Oh, there's something wrong with that machine." It tells us. There are some 50,000 machines or so, all doing different things. And if they go down we hear about it.It helps our NetOps group actually handle alarms in a way that lets them see the bigger picture of those alarms, and how they might affect our services. It helps us communicate information about the network state better to services that might be impacted by a specific network condition. As the kind of enterprise that straddles the line between telco size and enterprise size, it scales for us, because we're not all the way at telco yet.It covers a lot of different types of hardware. It can do a lot and saves us time.It is very stable. We have not had any major issues in over 10 years. The stability of the product is key. It never breaks, really. The stability and reliability of the Spectrum product have been top-notch.I can use it to detect whenever things go wrong on my network. We can plan changes and replacement of end-of-life products in our environment very well because it's very accurate.

It gives good insight into inside of what's going on with Exchange. The GUI is nicer than all the other graphical interfaces out there. Its ability to monitor failures and to restart a Windows service when it fails. The ability to see what the end user response is, so I can get a better understanding of what the end user is seeing when they connect to the Citrix servers.Enormous capability to monitor Citrix environments. The most important feature is the ability to design, then implement monitoring tests on the fly as we are adapting to different situations. The auto-configuration or auto-Thresholding is very important because it saves a phenomenal amount of labor and setup costs and time.EG monitors all infrastructure elements (all OS, all database, storage, network, and web server) from a single console.

Cons
If they could interact with the MIBs of vendors better, and have a lot more pre-loaded ones, that would be amazing for us right now.The Spectrum OneClick is a Java-based client, and that's aging. Really, before any new feature integration, I'd love to see a comprehensive rebuild of the UI.The upgrade process could be smoother. More of the steps around upgrading could be automated.A better integration with the UIM, as far as being able to do root cause analysis and that type of analytics.Needs better integration with all the other products in the Agile suite of tools; anything they could do to make that less complex, would be great. If nobody else has said the documentation needs improvement, let's go there. I understand, you can either write about it or you can do it. And most of us would rather they do it, but now that they've done it, those of us that didn't do it, we need to go and find: "Where did they write about this to tell us how to do it?" That's always lacking. We have had one support issue that's been open for a couple of months, and it is currently open.I would like to see them eliminate the Java console. The user interface for this is a Java applet that runs on your desktop, and it is very problematic for us.

Dashboards are difficult to create, and not so useful.Back-end configuration is not easy to implement. The interface could be improved as it is not real intuitive. It is not user-friendly.Their dashboards could use some improvement. The ability to customize them a bit more.Needs to improve the networking monitor capabilities.I can understand why they designed the user interface (UI) the way they did, but sometimes in the management of the eG Manager, it can be a bit clunky.would like to see improvements in the alarm display console. The UI looks a little dated and could do with a refresh.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The cost of some of these products are a little cost prohibitive, which is unfortunate. We have to find lower cost solutions for some of the things that we have to pull in. For the most part, CA has capabilities in pretty much everything that you would need. You just have to figure out where are you going to spend the most money for what you have to actually get done. You can do all these things but, which ones do you have to do? And that's hard to choose sometimes because you want to do them all. It’s a great tool, but an expensive one. Learn how to use it properly. It is very pricey. With the current trend of enterprises moving towards cheaper and more modern looking solutions like ManageEngine, SevOne, ServicePilot, and Paesller.

They gave us a good price, when they were found out we were looking at other products because their price was very high. We were looking at another solution, then we came back to them was because they brought the price down. We selected them for three years. It is not expensive. They are aligned with other enterprise solutions. It'd be nice if the price was lower. That would be an improvement. If using eG for virtual desktops, carefully calculate whether per named user, per concurrent user, or per serverYou may get some monitoring products with certain licensing you may own. Some of these can take ages to configure and setup, along with needing a license to drive the software.
