Quotes From Members Comparing CA Spectrum vs Nagios XI

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
It is easy to understand and determine when and/or where the network is failing. The monitoring just comes to us: "Oh, there's something wrong with that machine." It tells us. There are some 50,000 machines or so, all doing different things. And if they go down we hear about it.It helps our NetOps group actually handle alarms in a way that lets them see the bigger picture of those alarms, and how they might affect our services. It helps us communicate information about the network state better to services that might be impacted by a specific network condition. As the kind of enterprise that straddles the line between telco size and enterprise size, it scales for us, because we're not all the way at telco yet.It covers a lot of different types of hardware. It can do a lot and saves us time.It is very stable. We have not had any major issues in over 10 years. The stability of the product is key. It never breaks, really. The stability and reliability of the Spectrum product have been top-notch.I can use it to detect whenever things go wrong on my network.

I can monitor a phone on a desk to very big servers of any company.I can monitor a software made in-house to software of bigger companies.BPI: It allows defining peripherals to map business criticality for efficient monitoring, as required.Nagios XI helped me to draw the network and check for system failures. The ability to set up templates and groups of checks, as well as customize the checks themselves.Since this is an open source technology, if we are capable of writing the plugins in any scripting language, this product allows us to monitor anything we want. You want to monitor a specific metric that nobody else has? You can do it even with the most basic of scripting skills, and you can always share it with the vast community of Nagios Exchange.Though I downplayed the administrative NCC GUI, this is by far the strongest aspect of the Nagios XI product.

Cons
Make it easier to certify devices. If they could interact with the MIBs of vendors better, and have a lot more pre-loaded ones, that would be amazing for us right now.The Spectrum OneClick is a Java-based client, and that's aging. Really, before any new feature integration, I'd love to see a comprehensive rebuild of the UI.The upgrade process could be smoother. More of the steps around upgrading could be automated.A better integration with the UIM, as far as being able to do root cause analysis and that type of analytics.Needs better integration with all the other products in the Agile suite of tools; anything they could do to make that less complex, would be great. If nobody else has said the documentation needs improvement, let's go there. I understand, you can either write about it or you can do it. And most of us would rather they do it, but now that they've done it, those of us that didn't do it, we need to go and find: "Where did they write about this to tell us how to do it?" That's always lacking. We have had one support issue that's been open for a couple of months, and it is currently open.

The product uses the backend as Perl and could be modified to a more lightweight solution like what's being offered by other vendors. The Configuration Wizard needs improvement, because not all vendors are present.Improve the documentation, examples, and best practices, therefore users can understand how to do things.Nagios XI can improve its GUI for users with a new look. The PNP4Nagios plugin not working easily with XI is an issue for me, because some open source monitoring plugins do not work out of the box. But in the end, you learn to live with it.The product could be optimized to improve the administrative user experience via the Nagios Core Configuration (NCC) GUI module. The reporting part should be made simpler. While we can obtain all the reports we need, we always have to create work-arounds to get them.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The cost of some of these products are a little cost prohibitive, which is unfortunate. We have to find lower cost solutions for some of the things that we have to pull in. For the most part, CA has capabilities in pretty much everything that you would need. You just have to figure out where are you going to spend the most money for what you have to actually get done. You can do all these things but, which ones do you have to do? And that's hard to choose sometimes because you want to do them all. It’s a great tool, but an expensive one. Learn how to use it properly. It is very pricey. With the current trend of enterprises moving towards cheaper and more modern looking solutions like ManageEngine, SevOne, ServicePilot, and Paesller.

It is good to contact experts for advice about what is the best solution for your specific infrastructure and enterprise. For the cost of the commercial product and support, and taking into account the open source characteristics of it, I believe it is difficult to a better value. You can grow into the higher-priced scale as they learn how to utilize the features for Nagios XI.The pricing is really cost efficient. The licensing is perpetual and can be renewed very easily.
