Quotes From Members Comparing CA Spectrum vs. vRealize Network Insight

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The Spectrum tool improved our network assurance levels for our business units. All networks (or network equipment) are monitored through CA Spectrum. It is easy to understand and determine when and/or where the network is failing. The monitoring just comes to us: "Oh, there's something wrong with that machine." It tells us. There are some 50,000 machines or so, all doing different things. And if they go down we hear about it.It helps our NetOps group actually handle alarms in a way that lets them see the bigger picture of those alarms, and how they might affect our services. It helps us communicate information about the network state better to services that might be impacted by a specific network condition. As the kind of enterprise that straddles the line between telco size and enterprise size, it scales for us, because we're not all the way at telco yet.It covers a lot of different types of hardware. It can do a lot and saves us time.It is very stable. We have not had any major issues in over 10 years.

The most valuable feture is NetFlow to help us understand how VMs communicate with each other over ports that are known and ports that are also unknown to us. Our company is a security company, so it's very important for us to know exactly which VMs are doing what at all times. It especially helps with deploying NSX, that you're not having to manually chase down and figure out what you need to do to microsegment VMs. This gives a nice option where you can say, "Hey, this VM, show me what flows are there." I can export it out and then import it as an NSX rule and job done.It allows us to see how the network devices function as well as to see network glitches or fluctuations or dropping of packets. It gives the visibility that was either broken or there in pieces only. This solution provides a unified view of the whole system, back and forth. It has helped to reduce time to value, increase performance, more easily manage networks, and provide deep visibility.Whenever we say "valuable" with respect to the network, it's more towards the security. The firewall rule issues it shows us and the recommendations that we get from vRNI are the most valuable features because they are actually making our network more secure.compare-to-competition; I would recommend the product. I don't think there is any other product like this on the market right now.The most valuable feature is being able to easily see the path that the VM traffic is taking, what ports are in use. What's valuable to us is the ability to get a view into the virtual space, which is something we haven't had before. Before, it was done by collecting from network endpoints and extrapolating into the virtual environment. Now it's coming directly from the virtual environment.

Cons
The CA Technologies sales team destroyed their relationship with our business units. It needs better integration with other CA products.OS monitoring needs to be better developed, as well as their services, e.g., cluster monitoring, URLs, etc.Make it easier to certify devices. If they could interact with the MIBs of vendors better, and have a lot more pre-loaded ones, that would be amazing for us right now.The Spectrum OneClick is a Java-based client, and that's aging. Really, before any new feature integration, I'd love to see a comprehensive rebuild of the UI.The upgrade process could be smoother. More of the steps around upgrading could be automated.A better integration with the UIM, as far as being able to do root cause analysis and that type of analytics.

I would like to see them expand the capabilities to infrastructure types other than just VMware. While it's not exactly a feature, what normally happens when we are trying to look at the VM flow portion is - although Network Insight does have options to integrate a few physical switches into it - we can't really get an end-to-end flow of the network. We might be using a few switches that are not supported by Network Insight. That is where they can improve, in the support for more physical switches and network devices. In a very general way, I would like to see an improvement in interoperability with third-party product, from other vendors.I would like to see more reporting features, more dashboards. The UI, even though once you get to know it, it's easier, still it's hard to figure out by yourself. You have to go read, watch videos. It has a lot of data on it. So that is an issue. The compatibility with each and every component of the infrastructure is the main thing that I am looking for. I would like them to make sure that it's compatible with different kinds of storage systems, etc. I have seen the compatibility list. I feel it can be more compatible than it is right now.I want to see more in terms of microsegmentation. As of now, I can see the rules, but they are not in a readable format that I can convert to microsegmentation and can fit into NSX Manager. The only real improvement they can make is to add more third-party vendors into the environment, mostly switch manufacturers, because it's really limited to Cisco equipment and there are a lot of companies out there other than Cisco.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The cost of some of these products are a little cost prohibitive, which is unfortunate. We have to find lower cost solutions for some of the things that we have to pull in. For the most part, CA has capabilities in pretty much everything that you would need. You just have to figure out where are you going to spend the most money for what you have to actually get done. You can do all these things but, which ones do you have to do? And that's hard to choose sometimes because you want to do them all. It’s a great tool, but an expensive one. Learn how to use it properly. It is very pricey. With the current trend of enterprises moving towards cheaper and more modern looking solutions like ManageEngine, SevOne, ServicePilot, and Paesller.

It's an expensive product because we have a lot of nodes. They should include the product in NSX because it's important to have it for deployment.Cost always has room for improvement, you could always make it cheaper. But I think it's a good value for what you pay for it.The solution has helped us to reduce time, increase performance, reduce costs, and even easily manage networks. We are probably seeing 10 to 20 percent labor savings because we are able to be very specific and focused on what we want to do. It ends up saving the customer money and makes us be more efficient on our cost deliveries. It reduces costs. It takes something that may be challenging and makes it more usable and visual by being able to bring in tools, seeing what their impact is, such as microsegmentation and application rationalization, and seeing it quickly.
