Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution has very good threat and content filtering switches.""The web filtering feature and the intrusion protection system are the most valuable. It is a resilient appliance. I never had an issue with it in terms of any security breaches.""Advanced routing (RIP, OSPF, BGP, PBR). It gives you a seamless and simple integration into a large network.""It does a lot for you for intrusion protection and as an antivirus. The threat management bundle is worth the money. You don't need another company to monitor your web traffic for you. You can do everything yourself on the firewall. You restrict your own black list for people on the firewall. You don't need to pay some other company for another product to do that for you. The firewall can do that for you. So, it's an easy-to-use product for people to be independent. They don't need to rely on other vendors to do what the firewall can do. They can do everything.""Using this product makes the VPN seamless and almost invisible to me in the sense that I don't have to think about it.""The performance is good.""The most valuable feature is the policy routing and application control.""Consolidated our network environment at all locations, but mainly at our datacenter."

"Technical support has been good.""The product offers fairly good centralized administration and monitoring with decent capabilities that allow the administrator to have relevent control over devices.""Its most outstanding feature is content filtering."

More Check Point VPN-1 [EOL] Pros →

"The combination of SD-WAN and VPN capabilities is the most valuable feature.""Its technical support is excellent.""Fortinet FortiGate-VM is very easy to create the user of VPN, allowing them to use it quickly. Additionally, the integration and interface are good.""The EPM bundle is a good feature.""An enhanced security solution for any kind of alert that we have configured.""GitDM, like FortiGate VM, provides similar features to FortiGate appliances or cloud solutions. However, FortiGate VM is more suitable for heavy traffic and inspection compared to GitDM. Unfortunately, FortiGate VM lacks a dedicated SPU for inspection, and all features rely on CPU and RAM.""The tool improved the security in our company's virtualized environment, as it was helpful in creating an additional layer of security for the organization and for the use of the internet.""One top feature is the ability to use the appliance as a WLAN controller for up to 10 access points with the new 5.6 firmware."

Cons
"The inability to scale the FortiAnalyzer to match our growth necessitates the purchase of new hardware.""Difficult to add or define, and not that easy to configure and manage.""They can do more tests before they release new versions because I would like to be more assured. We had some experiences where they release something new and great, but some of the old features are disabled or they don't work well, which impacts the product satisfaction. The manufacturer should be able to prove that everything works or not only that it might work. This is applicable to most of the other services, software, and hardware companies. They all should work on this. We cannot trust every new release, such as a beta release, on the first day. We wait for some comments on the forums and from other companies that we know. We always wait a few weeks before we use the updated version. They should also extend the VPN client application, especially for Linux versions. Currently, it has an application for Linux devices, but it doesn't work the way we want to connect to the VPN. They use only the old connection, not the new one. They have VPN client applications for Windows and Mac, but they can add more useful features to better manage the devices and monitor the current health of each device. Such features would be helpful for our company.""Vulnerability scanning could be improved.""It is stable, but its stability can be improved.""Technical support is good but the response time could be faster.""It would be ideal if they had some sort of GUI interface for troubleshooting and diagnostics.""Performance and technical support are the main issues with this solution."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The reporting from the file or reporting from mobile access needs improvement. The solution, in general, could use better reporting tools.""Every time we made a change, the policy took about three minutes to apply, and obviously, when there were emergency changes or changes that we needed that were escalated, they were not modified very, very quickly.""It should have excellent integration with the other security tools."

More Check Point VPN-1 [EOL] Cons →

"We are experiencing a failed login issue. There should also be improvements in functionalities we store to enhance our services.""Improvements are needed for the responsive UI and JIT traffic reporting.""The technical support is not very responsive and is an area that needs to be improved.""They could simplify the troubleshooting process.""The performance could be better. Some features need to have quality control when the switch is working. The dedicated bandwidth for some users is not reliable.""Their offering for MFA isn't the cleanest.""Areas for improvement would be application control and web filtering.""Compatibility and integration with other products or vendors such as Cisco SD-WAN products need improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

    Information Not Available
  • "The pricing and licensing are not as expensive as its competitors."
  • "It is an expensive solution if you are migrating from an open source solution."
  • "If you are in a licensed solution, like Cisco or Palo Alto, it is cheaper. I do recommend using it with a license, because it is a security solution and it needs updates."
  • "The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful."
  • "It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront."
  • "It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing."
  • "The price is expensive compared with other vendors, like Cisco and Huawei."
  • "The best part of Fortinet is the license is bundled together, so it is easy to use and apply."
