We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Reliability is the best feature. We faced some issues when we were setting it up, but the service, portal, and administration are good.""Mainly the FortiGate reporting system is very good. It guides us through all the expectations of security. Fortinet provides us all that we need for security. Also, Fortinet FortiGate is a next-generation firewall. It is much more advanced than others.""The most valuable features are the possibility of having one fabric for switching on security.""The reporting you receive out of this appliance is excellent. You will not need an external management system.""The wireless control is helpful.""This product is definitely scalable.""The pricing is excellent. It's much less expensive than Cisco.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the ability to work in proxy mode, which other solutions, such as Palo Alto cannot. There are some features that are better that come at no extra license or subscriptions cost, such as basic SD-WAN. The DLT is useful, other solutions have the same feature too, such as Palo Alto."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pros →

"The ASA has seen significant improvement due to the IPS.""Cisco offers a great educational series to train users on their devices.""The IP filter configuration for specific political and Static NAT has been most valuable.""The Adversity Malware Protection (AMP) feature is the most valuable. It is also very easy to use. Every technical user can operate this solution without any difficulty. The dashboard of Cisco Firepower has every tool that a security operator needs. You can find every resource that you need to operate through this dashboard.""It helped us a lot with our VPNs for the home office during COVID. There has been more security and flexibility for VPNs and other applications.""The VPN feature is the most valuable to us because it accomplishes the task well. We're able to do everything we need to do.""The command line is the same as it is on the Cisco iOS router.""It is a highly stable product. We rarely receive any serious outdates, so it works quite well."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Pros →

"I can see what traffic is going on. I can easily block any programs from attacks.""I like how you can configure the rules. There is the task for the rules and a task for the network configuration. It also provides SMD filtering, and it can be integrated with the active directory for the users, their mission, and the VPN configuration. We are here in Sudan, and Stormshield didn't work in Sudan for more than a decade. Stormshield is a very strong firewall and very easy to configure and maintain. I am just working with the firewall solution, and we don't have any other solutions like endpoint solutions or something like that.""Our organization's main concern is stability, and this is a stable solution.""It's an easy, straightforward management platform to use.""Ease of use is the best feature of the product.""A very robust product.""The solution has improved my organization because I can see what traffic is happening and I can use it to block and prevent attacks.""The most valuable features are the IPS, the firewall function, and the price."

More Stormshield Network Security Pros →

Cons
"It would be nice if backups could more easily migrate between different models.""It claims it does DLP, but the degree and level of controls are very basic.""The user interface could be improved to make it less confusing and easier to set up.""Fortinet could improve the windows opener or the virtual IP solutions for opening windows. The virtual IP settings need improvement as firewalls are trending in new development directions.""If I had any criticism that I would give FortiGate, it would be that they need to stop changing their logging format. Every time we do a firmware upgrade, it is a massive issue on the SIM. Parsers have to be rebuilt. Even the FortiGate guys came in and said that they don't play well in the sandbox.""There could be more integration between the logging and analytical platforms to make it more seamless and integrated.""Currently, without the additional reporting module, we only have access to basic reporting.""There are some cloud-based features that could be much more flexible than they currently are."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"There is huge scope for improvement in URL filtering. The database that they have is not accurate. Their content awareness and categorization for URL filtering are not that great. We faced many challenges with their categorization and content awareness. They should improve these categorization issues.""It would be good if Cisco made sure that the solution supports all routing protocols. Sometimes it doesn't.""An area of improvement for this solution is the console visualization.""It could also use a reporting dashboard.""The graphical interface could be improved. From what I have seen, Fortinet, for example, has a nicer GUI.""If you need to reschedule a call with the support team when you face a new issue with the product, then it may get a bit of a problem to get a hold of someone from the support team of Cisco.""HTTPs inspection and higher throughput/spec would be good.""I would like to see more configurable feature parity with Cisco ASA, which is the legacy product that Cisco is moving away from. When configuring remote access VPN, not all of the options are there. You have to download another tool, which means that the configuration takes a little bit longer with Cisco Secure Firewall. Though it's getting there, there are still some features lagging behind."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Not all the fields are activated yet and we were informed that it will take at least one month.""The SD card could be more secure.""The biggest issue was their support department was not able to help us, then everything stops. This is a no-go area for me.""It could be better if it were more user-friendly. It's too complicated for us to use it. The price could be better as well.""This solution has a big problem with web filtering and it needs to be improved.""The filtering configuration could be better. We have some difficulties with the filtering configuration and the filter extension. It's not that easy. It's not that straightforward. In the next release, I would like to see a reporting system. Stormshield doesn't have any tutorials on how to do the configuration and things like that. They just have documentation on the website. If you want to configure, for example, Cisco or Fortinet, you can find tutorials on YouTube. They show you how to configure the features, and so on. In Stormshield, there is nothing on social media or the internet on how to configure different things. The lack of documentation or the lack of material makes it difficult for others to adopt this solution.""A more user-friendly interface would be helpful.""The product must improve its pricing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

  • "The pricing could be better."
  • "The price of this solution and the price of support are ok."
  • "We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive."
  • "I think the price is good."
  • "We chose Stormshield for its price, as the Azure firewall was too expensive."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
