Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Advanced routing (RIP, OSPF, BGP, PBR). It gives you a seamless and simple integration into a large network.""The reporting you receive out of this appliance is excellent. You will not need an external management system.""Security solution with a straightforward and quick setup. It's a stable and scalable product.""The technical support in our region is excellent.""The most valuable features are the possibility of having one fabric for switching on security.""It increases security posture and is helpful for firewall reporting, intrusion protection, web filtering, and SD-WAN implementation.""The most valuable feature of FortiGate is FortiView which provides proactive monitoring.""Anti-Spam web content filterinG."

"I have integrated it for incidence response. If there is a security event, the Cisco firewall will automatically block the traffic, which is valuable.""One of the most valuable features of Firepower 7.0 is the "live log" type feature called Unified Event Viewer. That view has been really good in helping me get to data faster, decreasing the amount of time it takes to find information, and allowing me to fix problems faster. I've found that to be incredibly valuable because it's a lot easier to get to some points of data now.""Collaboration with other Cisco products such as ISE and others is the most valuable feature.""Right now, Cisco ASA NGFW has given us a lot of improvement. We are planning to move to a new facility and will be a much larger organization.""It protects our network.""This solution helped us to identify the key areas where we need to focus to block traffic that is malicious to our organization.""The features I found most valuable in this solution, are the overall security features.""Cisco ASA is very strong."

"It's an easy, straightforward management platform to use.""I like how you can configure the rules. There is the task for the rules and a task for the network configuration. It also provides SMD filtering, and it can be integrated with the active directory for the users, their mission, and the VPN configuration. We are here in Sudan, and Stormshield didn't work in Sudan for more than a decade. Stormshield is a very strong firewall and very easy to configure and maintain. I am just working with the firewall solution, and we don't have any other solutions like endpoint solutions or something like that.""This solution is quick and easy to configure.""The scalability of the solution is good.""Ease of use is the best feature of the product.""I like that it works fine. Stormshield is a very good solution.""The solution has improved my organization because I can see what traffic is happening and I can use it to block and prevent attacks.""Our organization's main concern is stability, and this is a stable solution."

Cons
"The cloud management and automation capability could be improved.""Fortinet FortiGate should improve the VPN tokens.""Difficult to add or define, and not that easy to configure and manage.""Price, of course, can always be more competitive or better.""WAN load-balancing could be a lot better at detecting when a link is poor or inconsistent, and not just flat out dead.""Compared to some other products, the DLP is not at par for the moment.""We sometimes have issues with FortiGate's routing table in the latest firmware update. We had to downgrade the device because our customers complained about bugs.""While FortiGate is cheaper than most other solutions, we're seeing increased license renewal costs. Most of our clients are asking for more significant discounts because the price is going up."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The scalability has room for improvement.""It will be nice if they had what you traditionally would use a web application scanner for. If the solution could take a deeper look into HTTP and HTTPS traffic, that would be nice.""The one thing that the ASAs don't have is a central management point. We have a lot of our environments on FTD right now. So, we are using a Firewall Management Center (FMC) to manage all those. The ASAs don't really have that, but they are easy to use if you physically go into them and manage them.""I wish the Cisco interface was not so granular. Check Point was easier to create specific rules than with ASAv.""There may have been one or two incidences of malicious threats.""The product crashes. We have a cluster of firewalls and we regularly get failovers.""The usability of Cisco Firepower Threat Defense is an issue. The product is still under development, and the user interface is very difficult to deal with.""The overall licensing structure could improve to make the solution better."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Not all the fields are activated yet and we were informed that it will take at least one month.""The product must improve its pricing.""With Stormshield, there are difficulties joining things, and it can be complex depending on the architecture.""Stormshield Network Security is quite expensive.""This solution has a big problem with web filtering and it needs to be improved.""The biggest issue was their support department was not able to help us, then everything stops. This is a no-go area for me.""A more user-friendly interface would be helpful.""Improvement is needed in terms of the technical support of the manufacturer."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."
  • More Cisco Secure Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For mid-sized companies, they sell their appliances for good prices."
  • "The SN200 series costs between $500 USD and $600 USD per year, whereas the SN700 series costs approximately $1,000 annually."
  • "The pricing could be better."
  • "The price of this solution and the price of support are ok."
  • "We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive."
  • "I think the price is good."
  • "We chose Stormshield for its price, as the Azure firewall was too expensive."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
