We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has improved our organization with control data.""The most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiGate is URL filtering.""Unified Threat Management (UTM) features.""FortiGate's web and URL filtering are unlike any other firewall I've used. The functionality of URL filtering in those solutions is problematic because everything is encrypted, and firewalls can't break that encryption protocol. Fortinet has an SSL proxy, so the encryption is done before the packet ever leaves the FortiGate. The URL filter is definitely one of the most helpful features.""We have found it to be very reliable and that's why our teams and various users in our company use it as our main firewall every day.""Fortinet offers the latest versions to cater to the needs of enterprises.""The interface is very good.""Mainly the FortiGate reporting system is very good. It guides us through all the expectations of security. Fortinet provides us all that we need for security. Also, Fortinet FortiGate is a next-generation firewall. It is much more advanced than others."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pros →

"A powerful enterprise security solution that is dependible.""The most valuable Cisco Secure Firewall features are options, features, and ease of deployment because it's an appliance.""The technical team is always available when we have problems.""The management aspect of the product is very straightforward.""The greatest benefit that this has provided to our organization is that we've been able to adjust the time that it takes to implement firewall changes. It's gone from a week to less than half a day to implement a change, which means that our DevOps team can be much more agile, and there is much less overhead on the firewall team.""There are some hiccups here and there, but compared to the technical support from other vendors, I have had the best experience with Cisco's technical support. I would rate them at nine out of ten.""The whole firewall functionality, including firewall policies and IPS policies, is valuable. It has all kinds of functionalities. It has IPS, VPN, and other features. They are doing quite a lot of stuff with their devices.""I think Cisco ASA Firewall is the most stable firewall solution."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Pros →

"We like FortiGate-VM's IPS features and its ability to create multiple virtual firewalls.""I rate the tool's stability a ten out of ten.""The tool improved the security in our company's virtualized environment, as it was helpful in creating an additional layer of security for the organization and for the use of the internet.""The most valuable features we have found to be the VPN, ease of use, and overall simplicity.""It's very easy to set up, even for more junior developers.""Regarding specific features, I appreciate the option for external selection, where you can choose either to use a default or create a self-description. This simplifies the process compared to other vendors that require creating a test extension profile and then applying it to the installation. With FortiGate, there is a streamlined approach. From the benefits perspective, clients mainly see cost reduction, especially with FortiGate VM Firewall, as it eliminates the need for additional hardware.""High network throughput while providing leading edge network security technology for a competitive price.""Its technical support is excellent."

Cons
"Fortinet FortiGate could improve if it had a cloud-managed solution.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having a frequent ask questions(FAQ) area for people to receive quick answers to popular questions. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have an SMS notification feature. For example, if you cannot access your email you could receive an SMS message.""The ease of use could be improved.""It could use better throughput on some of the smaller boxes for the branch offices.""FortiGate support could do some improvements on their IPv6 configuration. Right now it's still in the very early stage for utilizing in an enterprise level network environment.""The performance could be a bit better. Right now, I find it to be lacking. Having good performance is very important for our work.""Due to its higher cost, Fortinet FortiGate can lead to increased operational expenses.""The scalability could be better."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The scalability is a bit limiting, to be honest. In terms of when you look to changing landscape in terms of threats, I think to me, my personal it's a bit limiting.""Comparing Cisco solution to others, it is expensive, it would be better for it to be cheaper.""Most users do not have awareness of this product's functionality and features. Cisco should do something to make them aware of them. That would be quite excellent and useful to organizations that are still using legacy data-center-security products.""When we talk about data centers, we are talking about 100 gig capacity or 400 gig capacity. When it comes to active-active solution clustering and resilience and performance, Cisco should look into these a little bit more.""The content filtering on an application level is not as good as other solutions such as Palo Alto.""I would like more features in conjunction with other solutions, like Fortinet.""The most valuable features of the product are the VPN and the NextGen firewall features such as application control, URL filtering, etc.""Antivirus features must be integrated for end user security."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"The price is problematic.""Improvements are needed for the responsive UI and JIT traffic reporting.""Web filtering is a feature that needs some improvement. There should be some additional features to allow active users to change their own passwords.""The product needs to focus on cloud-nativeness and pricing.""The technical support is not very responsive and is an area that needs to be improved.""The operating system isn't stable, so it goes to memory counters every night.""We have encountered certain issues with the bandwidth in respect of the security layer.""The pricing is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."

  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

  • "The pricing and licensing are not as expensive as its competitors."

  • "If you are in a licensed solution, like Cisco or Palo Alto, it is cheaper. I do recommend using it with a license, because it is a security solution and it needs updates."
  • "The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful."
  • "It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront."
  • "It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing."
  • "The price is expensive compared with other vendors, like Cisco and Huawei."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
