Pros
"It is easy to use and performs very well.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the different types of profiling. It has been the most effective for me. The WAF and the antivirus profile are the most effective in network protection.""Customers want to load balance more than eight lines or six internet lines. FortiGate is the only solution that can accomplish this.""The most valuable feature is the FortiManager for centralized management.""The scalability is good in Fortinet FortiGate.""The ability to set up remote systems is the most valuable feature.""The solution is extremely reliable.""The pipe filter application is an outstanding feature."

"If you compare the ASA and the FirePOWER, the best feature with FirePOWER is easy to use GUI. It has most of the same functionality in the Next-Generation FirePOWER, such as IPS, IPS policies, security intelligence, and integration and identification of all the devices or hardware you have in your network. Additionally, this solution is user-friendly.""The interface is user-friendly.""When it comes to the integration among Cisco tools, we find it easy. It's a very practical integration with other components as well.""The most valuable feature would be the IP blocking. It gets rid of things that you don't need in your environment.""The clusters in data centers are great.""Since the product is stable, we do not have to spend additional money to buy other firewalls. Once deployed, we can use the product for a long time. Thus, it is cost effective.""Protecting our landscape in general and being able to see logging when things aren't going as set out in policies are valuable features. Our security department is keen on seeing the logging.""The primary benefits of using Cisco Secure solutions are time-saving, a robust API, and convenience for the security team."

"The VPN connectivity feature is really nice.""In four steps one can configure the entire firewall.""The stability of Sangfor NGAF is good.""The level of support provided to local companies is good. They transform their application control and other settings according to that country.""In our hospital, Sangfor NGAF works well for us in terms of ensuring confidentiality and availability, which are crucial in the healthcare industry.""We've found the technical support to be helpful.""It seems to be a durable, stable product.""It's a very simple to use product."

Cons
"In the next release, I would like to see the interface simplified to be more user-friendly.""I would like some automated custom reporting.""It should come integrated or have its own type of network monitor tool in a module. There should just be one package, and you are good to go.""I would like to see better pricing in the next release, as well as a simplification of the installation.""The solution can have more features in a single box that can be multi-applied to integrate everything.""Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve the protection, it did not prevent us from being attacked. Additionally, Fortinet FortiGate could provide more features for WAF devices. I should not have to purchase two solutions, it would be a benefit to combine these features into one solution.""There can be more security in hybrid implementations. When a customer has a hybrid environment where some parts are in the cloud, we need a consistent security solution for such scenarios.""The platform's interface could improve."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"I don't have to see all the object groups that have been created on that firewall. That's just something that I would really appreciate on the CLA, even though it already exists on the GUI.""There is room for improvement in the stability or software quality of the product. There were a few things in the past where we had a little bit of a problem with the product, so there is room for improvement.""It integrates with other security products from Cisco, but sometimes, there can be glitches or errors.""Cisco ASA should be easier to use. It is a bit tough to navigate and see what is going on.""The initial setup was complex.""They should improve their interface.""Licensing is complex, and I'd like it to be simplified. This is an area for improvement.""The policies module in FMC specifically isn't the most user-friendly. Coming from Cisco ASA, Cisco ASA is a little bit easier to use. When you get into particularly complex deployments where you have a lot of different interfaces and all that kind of stuff, it's a little bit tricky. Some usability improvements there would be nice."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"An area of improvement for Sangfor NGAF could be in the field of reporting and logging.""The tool is expensive.""Occasional issues with breaches which are dealt with expediently.""The solution should be able to work in a hybrid setup.""They need to increase the number of ports in the firewall.""Lacks consistency in terms of filtering certain websites and applications.""The web interface needs to be improved, making it more user-friendly.""Sangfor could improve by providing better real-time reporting, as the current reports don't offer the level of detail we need, especially for runtime insights."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."
  • More Cisco Secure Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It costs about 8 to 10 thousand dollars per year for 500 users, standard licensing fees included."
  • "Sangfor is cheaper than competing vendors."
  • "The price is unmatcheable."
  • "When it comes to the price of firewall solutions, Sangfor NGAF takes the cake."
  • "Sangfor NGAF price is reasonable and there is an annual license. However, the maintenance cost can be a bit high."
  • "For four to five physical appliances for a licensed firewall, it costs approximately $4,000."
  • "The price could be more competitive."
  • "The license of Sangfor NGAF can be purchased at different interval lengths, such as annually or three years. They offer a range of packages to choose from, such as combo or hybrid packages. We are using the complete solution package which includes IM, NGF and SSL VPN, and WAF."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
