We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The centralized management is the most important feature. We can monitor what is going on at every location in our network with just one center. The most valuable feature is the application-level routing. The most useful feature for our organization is the combination of on-prem and cloud-based deployments. We connect securely to our hybrid cloud using transit VPCs and cloud on-ramp for fast deployments. The regular net routing is a good feature. The reliability is high and we have only had to restart it once or twice over the years. The product's brand recognition is one of the most valuable aspects of the solution. It's very easy to manage and monitor the network's health and security using the solution. There is minimum blind space in this solution.

The most valuable feature is the dynamic multipath optimization. They make use of a combination of different internet lines, which improves quality. The most valuable feature is load balancing. The agility to per-packet direct application flows.Proactively detects where problems might arise. The most valuable feature is the Dynamic Multipath Optimization (DMPO), which allows the customer to maintain and monitor their link quality in real-time.The most valuable feature for one of our customers is the ability to stage cloud workloads from the local network.

Cons
I would like them to add some more SD-WAN ports. We have seen one implementation where there were four ISPs. Currently, we have a maximum of two ports for ISP in this device. Therefore, we cannot connect directly, and we need other switches. There should be some option to have more than two ports for SD-WAN.This solution should include a fully functional firewall at no extra charge. The inexpensive Viptela hardware may be replaced with overpriced Cisco routers. This would be a tragic mistake for Cisco as the lightweight commodity platform built by Viptela is the reason to own this solution. The solution could have a better web interface to simplify changing configurations.I would like to see a better, web-based interface to make changes to the configuration or to view statistics. The initial setup could be a bit less complex.Since most user-data is going through the solution, we are concerned about security, as all the information is in the cloud and not on-premises. The user data authentification should be higher to better prevent malicious attacks. The main issue is that not in the technology, but it comes back comparison. When we do a comparison with other SD WAN solutions, they are priced better.

There is no security included, which is something that should be improved. There is room for improvement with respect to security. The cost of VeloCloud could be lowered.Complex deployment and integration.Reports could be simplified.VeloCloud needs improvement in terms of its security features.Technical support is in need of improvement.

Cisco SD-WAN has a true software defined architecture separating out the Control, Data and Management/Orchestration layers. It has the best in breed hardware, routing capabilities, integrated Security stack, segmentation, very robust policy definition and an analytics engine. You will have to check on their multi-tenancy capabilities and scale related with the same. Velocloud on the other hand has similar capabilities but has a different architecture where they need the Gateway and the control plane is integrated on it. It comes with some of the Application Quality of Experience capabilities (which is also available on Cisco SD-WAN) but might be limited in integrated security, analytics, etc. They however have a proven record for Multi-tenant deployments which might be important for a CSP
