We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable. We're doing more than 3,000 VMs. Every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours.""The tool's most valuable features are backup management and speed.""It is a very complete product.""The most valuable feature of Avamar would have to be the way it works over needing very little bandwidth to move data across a WAN or LAN.""The installation of the solution is easy.""I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses.""It's a good solution.""They are extremely reliable and scalable — they provide the best de-duplication on the market."

More Dell Avamar Pros →

"Provides connectivity to a lot of different cloud storage solutions.""MSP360 Backup's most valuable feature is its backup interface.""General ease of use and performance of the Windows version is the most valuable feature.""I was mainly concerned with cloud backups, OneDrive backups, consumer OneDrive, business OneDrive, Google backups, and SharePoint backups. The solution did a good job of the backup.""The initial setup is very easy. It's not overly complex.""Technical support is very good.""The most valuable feature for me is that I can see what has has been successfully backed up and what not. I do not mean the file or folder view, because that's problematic with GDPR, but I mean which machines have successfully backed up. It's very valuable because you don't have to check the machines. The second feature is that you can change backup settings in the portal.""The feature that I have found most valuable is its online backup capacity because you don't have to do an entire backup again and again, it just does whatever you type in, you type a, it goes a, you type b, it goes b. It doesn't take an entire site up again and again. So that incremental and bit by bit backup is important, it is a nice feature here."

Cons
"Avamar needs a greater emphasis on storage targets. If it's going to keep pace with the times, it needs more ability to leverage cloud storage.""The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems.""This solution could improve by introducing daily verifications and another repository.""Avamar is not the best tool when it comes to taking Azure backups. Like Commvault, if Avamar can support VM-level backups for the cloud, that would make it a bit better.""Avamar is dependent on the hardware. It can't be implemented with ordinary storage. It can only be implemented with an EMC product. We want to have a backup solution that allows us to use independent storage and other hardware. It would be good if they can simplify its technology and make it possible to implement it with another storage. This is probably not possible because Avamar is an EMC product, and EMC would like to sell its own products.""It was challenging to back up our Exchange database, which is one of the reasons we did not continue using this solution.""The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker.""A benefit would be support for either Azure Cool Storage or AWS Glacier."

More Dell Avamar Cons →

"Using the solution incurs additional charges for the device storage and backup which are not included in the service.""The main improvement is that it should have GDPR compliance. That's the problematic point. They say they are GDPR compliant, but they are not.""Maybe implement an easier interface for basic users. For example, a set-up wizard with all the commonly used features as default.""The product could be more user-friendly.""The Linux GUI leaves a lot to be desired. It lacks many of the features of the Windows version and is buggy, but it is still usable.""The graphics are looking a bit old and should be updated.""The initial setup is a little complex as it has to be done in the office and requires someone to come in and install the solution on your server, then configure the scheduling, backup pushing, and so on.""There are some things that we don't like about it. That is why I was exploring alternatives in a hyper-scale environment. That is why I was checking IT Central Station."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "It provides a good cost savings compared to our previous cloud backup."
  • "We have a very good return on investment."
  • "Pricing is reasonable although can be quite a large upfront cost."
  • "It includes a standard licensing fee. Once a year, there is a rebranding fee. The licensing costs are available on the internet for MSP360 Backup. There is a discount structure where if you have over 50 devices, you get a 50% discount. So, my cost is $2 a license per month."
  • "MSP360 is vastly cheaper than its competitors and has almost all the same features."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "The cost is pretty inexpensive. Around four to five dollars per device, per workstation on each server."
  • "I rate the price of MSP360 Backup a seven out of ten."
